I am despondent about this, for reals.
So Damn Yankees is my favorite musical ever. I'm not sure why, but I love it. It could be the song "Heart" or the fact that I totally crushed on the boy who played Shoeless Joe in our HS production. IDK?

But the fact is, I wish I were writing my thesis about it instead of what I am writing about. Blah.

Anyway, I could write a novel about the song "Near to You" because it is so fucking amazing, especially the 1995 revival orchestration, ugh.

It being my favorite, I've always harbored a secret longing for Zac Efron to play Shoeless Joe (from Hannibal, MO).

Now I know some of you think he needs to get away from musicals, but honestly I think he is talented enough that he can do whatever he wants and he'll always be able to break into ~*dramaz*~ when he's ready. If he loves doing musicals, he should fucking do musicals. But w/e, this is the one musical he had to be in.

At any rate, I've just heard the most disheartening news, according to playbill:

Variety reports that Craig Zadan and Neil Meron — the famed producing team behind the Oscar-winning film of Chicago, the acclaimed movie of Hairspray and the recent TV film "A Raisin in the Sun" — will produce [a new film version of Damn Yankees] for New Line Cinema.

Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel will pen the script.

The cast will be headed by film stars Jim Carrey as the Devil and Jake Gyllenhaal as Joe Boyd. The role of Lola has yet to be cast.

WHAT WERE CRAIG ZADAN AND NEIL MERON THINKING?
ZAC EFRON WAS BORN TO PLAY THIS ROLE.

Motherfuckers, ruining my life's dream casting.

I only take comfort in the fact that Jim Carrey's mere presence will cause this to flop.

I'm sorry bb. But he cant be in every musical.

I know Adam wanted to remake Dman Yankees with Will Smith. I wonder how he feels about this.

I hesitate telling my mom this, she is a HUGE DY fan and hates Jim AND Jake.

I doubt Adam will do this (although he'd like to), since he has Hairspray 2, Bye Bye Birdie, and Bob the musical.. all of which have no real time frame.

I'm in the middle of moving and kind of like 'why this week?!' because there's been quite a bit of news. Just wanted to say I'm sorry Zac has not been cast.

"Motherfuckers, ruining my life's dream casting." Read that and was like 'Aw, girl I've been there before.' :(

A big hug for you!

I guess that was partly directed at me. Lol. Imo, it has nothing to do with talent but only public perception and the studios willingness to cast actors with certain profiles.

While I don't know Damn Yankees, I feel that this would have been a way better musical for Zac to do than Footloose or Hairspray 2. It seems "adult" and high-profile which is probably the reason why he didn't get it.

Btw, I've actually written that post about my casting ideas on Footloose. It's in draft stage because I'm still mulling over certain casting ideas but you should be able to see it. I'm curious what you think about it. Just ignore the "introduction" - I plan on posting it at FF at some point and it's for them.

It's a lot of people re: the musicals, lol. And the cynic in me agrees completely about public perception. But my blind faith in him allows me to believe he can do anything and I want him to just enjoy the ride.

I do think this would have been better than Footloose or Hairspray 2. Although I am hesitant about how this will translate to the screen so it could go really badly too. Plus, of all the comparisons people make about 17 Again to other movies, Damn Yankees is actually one of the closest in plot. So for the sake of variety and versatility it probably wasn't a good role for him, if he even was approached.

I know a lot of people would a have a fit, but I would love to see West Side Story revisited but with a far more grim and realistic atmosphere, almost like the original musical but with the gritty style of Slumdog Millionaire or even Children of Men. It could be beautiful.

Your post is great I think. I really like your suggestions of John C Reilly and Alexa and Tina. I'm not enchanted by the idea of Emmy or Evan Rachel Wood, but neither have projects lined up. I like Anna Kendrick for Ariel too, she was amazing in Camp. Though I'm a bit hesitant now that she is involved in the whole Twilight debacle.

I would say that I think timing could be a problem for either her or Amanda (whom I also like a lot for this). Both have projects starting soon, but there is a good chance they'll be done by Footloose's as-of-yet-unknown start date.

I'm assuming all the casting is done at this point, but who knows. They've still got probably at least until late May before rehearsals start.

I really wonder if they are going for unknowns though for at least some of the young cast. But I hope they are very careful with the older cast, which I think is really important for credibility.

I'm sure he likes them but I wouldn't bet on him liking them more than "normal" movies. He just gets them based on his history.

And regards to public perception - have you seen all the comments? Not the trades or even ONTD but the blogs etc... The stereotypes are mindboggling.

Re Footloose - I really want John C. Reilly to do that. Personally, I don't think there is any better casting than that; he's perfect. I'm not trilled with Emmy or Even either but still better than what I've listed on the bottom. I'm not worried about any Twilight involvement of Anna. For one, it's a tiny role and two it wouldn't hurt to attract that audience.

Have you heard anything about filming dates? Any rumors? Because I've heard absolutely nothing so far. And I wouldn't think that casting is done either - perhaps a few but definitely not all. I'm still hoping it goes away.

Yeah, I have serious doubt that it'll be a successful movie musical (box office wise and critically). It has more going against it than for it. If it has to happen, I would love for at least get a new director.

Anyway, I don't know if you're interested in the casting ideas I've talked about but I've friended you (I hope you don't mind), so you should be able to read it if you want to.

Is it too much to hope that SAG strikes and it kills the project?

Like I said I don't mind him doing musicals, but this one I'm not so sure about, especially with Kenny (as much as Zac loves him) at the helm.
Bee: Zac - HSM2 BOIjeezbee on February 27th, 2009 11:10 pm (UTC)
Normally I'm against the SAG strike but I would make an exception here. That's a totally awesome idea. Timing would work (they are at an impass again after the new leadership refused the last AMPAS offer).

Re: the stereotypes. Yes, it is unbelievable and often really discouraging (not just in terms of Zac, but in terms of humanity). And some of the ridiculous stories about his vanity/pride. It is really unfortunate because we all know how much bullshit goes into those stories.

An i'm thankful for that. I'd like to see a less musical Zac and more serious Zac.

Me too. Really I just want him to be able to do whatever he wants, but this was my dream musical for him. :( Oh well, I'll get over it.

With me it's just the fact that I don't like musicals. I was and still am surprised that I even liked Hairspray.
