I watched these again, and Zac performs Afro-American masculinity as much as my son. I once texted my son and coded myself Afro-American male by using the slang, the speech rhythms, the attitude. He texted back, said I was not his mother and accused me of stealing her phone. The whole thing pointed to the fact that its all performance, clothes that we put on and take off at will as long as we know they are pre-made clothes that signify nothing. It's when we confuse the garments of identity with identity itself that we are in trouble. When we equate ourselves with a pre packaged code then we cease to be at all. The struggle of life is to recognize the pre packaged codes in ourselves and where they intersect, overlap and gap, for that's where we truly are, somewhere in between.

"It's when we confuse the garments of identity with identity itself that we are in trouble."

Identity has been a persistent problem for many actors. Some like to pretend to be other people because they don't like who they are, or at least who they perceive themselves to be.

Zac puts a lot of time and effort into building up his physique. I wonder if his acquired musculature might be one of those "garments of identity."
