Round up: Dirty Grandpa, Wedding Dates, Catfish & a rumor
Dirty Grandpa

A few more pics from filming a week ago:

They have a few more scenes to film — mostly beach and pool scenes plus a bit on a street and a few interiors. This is planned from 27 April to 6 May on Tybee Island, GA.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates

Zac's movie brother has been cast:
Adam DeVine has nabbed the coveted lead opposite Zac Efron in Fox's upcoming comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

Jake Szymanski, an Adam McKay protege who hails from Funny or Die, is directing the comedy project that Chernin Entertainment is producing for Fox.

The project is based on the true story of Mike and Dave Stangle, brothers from Albany, N.Y., who attempted to find a wedding date for a cousin's nuptials by placing an ad on Craigslist.

The movie version sees the hard-partying and immature brothers posting an ad for dates and coming across a pair of honeys who can out-party and out-immature our slovenly heroes.

Fox also moved the release date up by a few weeks to July 8, 2016.

The Greatest Showman on Earth

Tracking Board posted another casting rumor for Zac:
Zac Efron is in talks to star opposite Hugh Jackman in 20th Century Fox’s THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH. The original musical will tell the story of P.T. Barnum, a showman with a gift for hoaxing the public as he creates the three-ring circus that made him famous. The film serves as a musical rendition of the life of P.T. Barnum, who formed the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Jackman will star as Barnum.

Efron is in talks to star as Phillip, a handsome, rich young theatre producer who decides to become Barnum’s junior partner/apprentice and eventually becomes Barnum’s close friend and ringmaster. The role would require Efron to channel his Hairspray and High School Musical roots, as it requires signing and dancing

Michael Gracey will direct the musical biopic, with the screenplay’s most current draft having been written by Bill Condon, with a polish by Jonathan Tropper.

Production is slated to commence late this summer, in New York.

This is really a just rumor. Not only is the source not the most reliable (esp when it's casting of ongoing projects) but even if Zac would want to do it, scheduling is probably an issue with his other commitments.

Zac makes a brief appearance in Catfish this season. You can see him in the beginning of this video:

At least Tybee Island is more chill so there probably won't be any paps which Zac will like

I actually think this is going to be worse (potentially way worse). There might be no paps (although it remains to be seen if that set pap will go down since he knows it's beach stuff) but the people are already rallying and since it's so small and the locations are known, he can't escape or hide at all.

I mean unless that pap is super dedicated to getting pictures. Atlanta and Tybee Island are basically a state wide distance apart. It's not like NYC where a train is quick and easy so unless people in Atlanta want to spend a good amount on gas to drive there, I wouldn't think the people in Atlanta would be on set this time around.

So this brings me to the fan part in that the types of fans in Savannah and around Tybee Island are a little different than Atlanta fans (& the celeb stalkers in Atlanta that aren't in Savannah) so as long as the pap dude isn't there it could be assumed we'd get more fan pictures because the people there are less likely to mob and bum rush him. (that's not counting the people who would drive from other parts of Georgia though).

I know it's a 4-hour drive and I doubt he would bother for "normal pics" of Zac just walking around but he also knows that shirtless beach pics of Zac would make him way more money than regular pics. I hope he doesn't bother but I wouldn't bet on it.

I hope you're right about the locals but I can't see why they would be so chill when our previous experience always was that little towns who get celebs even way less are typically more rabbit than big towns. Plus, they have the advantage of word of mouth quickly spreading about exact whereabouts.

I hope for the best but personally I expect the fans to be more likely to mob and bum rush him than in Atlanta.

You are probably correct. Recall, the Isle of Man was supposed to be beyond nowhere, but the local fangirls rallied and mobbed the production whenever school was out.

I go to school in Savannah and I've got to say that the locals in Savannha and Tybee are actually pretty chill with celebrities. We got the whole cast from Magic Mike in October and November and they didn't really get bothered much. I was actually pretty surprised. And we always get a few big names every year for the Film Festival in november and everyone is pretty chill about it. So much that the celebrities go out to the local bars and hang out with the locals frequently. So I don't think there's much to worry about.
Don't know about that one paparazzi tho

That's nice to hear. Fingers crossed. :)

I think Adam is a good choice for his brother. My only "complaint" would be that he's not a big name so Zac has to do all the heavy-lifting with selling the project. But he seems to be a nice guy and I can buy them as brothers.

I'm curious though about who plays how etc and how much they change. Initially I thought Zac would be playing Dave but according to Variety, he's playing Mike. In real life, Mike is the older brother (by 4 years) but Adam is 4 years older than Zac. It's not a big deal... they don't need to adhere to all details of their real story, I was just expecting the other one.

I would actually not mind Zac doing that musical (working with Hugh and esp keeping working right after) but aside from the credibility of the source, I really can't see timing to work unless they push the start even further into mid fall. At least the way the schedule of his comedies looks to me right now. This is not a movie where he can show up last minute... considering he hasn't been singing or dancing for a long time now, he would need sufficient time to rehearse beforehand.

It's getting hard to keep track. Let's see, he needs to
1. Finish Dirty Grandpa (April-May)
2. Hopefully, do some promo for WAHF
3. Film Mike & Dave
4. Film Neighbors II
5. Maybe, film P. T. Barnum (supposedly, late summer)

Does anyone recall the shooting times for 3 and 4?

I also think the Barnum project would be great, especially because Zac would be seconding Hugh Jackman, who has musical creds without the HSM stigma. Of course, this is another of those "in talks" stories. There's a lot of talking in Hollywood, and little action.
kleth on February 28th, 2015 07:09 pm (UTC)
OK, to answer my own question, there's actually not a lot of info. There doesn't seem to be a shoot date for Mike & Dave, and Neighbors II is set for a "summer shoot."

It's just possible that Zac could do all these projects, but the schedules would have to be fitted together like Inca stonework.
Beejeezbee on March 1st, 2015 12:11 am (UTC)
Yeah, theoretically timing could work out if everything is planned to the minute and there are no delays or changes etc but I just don't see it happening. While they are clearly moving towards production on Wedding Dates (not going into details because they are going to be outdated by tomorrow), it's not going fast enough to make that happen imo. It's all fine for that movie and Neighbors to work out but I have my doubts that would work all before that musical is supposed to start (if it starts as planned).

I hope WAYF is coming out this year but summer is looking less likely every week without a release date.

"I hope WAYF is coming out this year but summer is looking less likely every week..."

Waaah! I wasn't panting to see WAYF because I'm not interested in the DJ scene, but I assumed it would at least give me one Zac movie in 2015. 2016 could be a boom year, but must we endure almost two years without a new release?
Beejeezbee on March 2nd, 2015 09:07 pm (UTC)
I do expect it to be 2015 but I'm just not sure about summer which is also a very competitive time. I get why they considered it but WAYF is a small, r-rated drama which might be better off during fall. But nobody knows anything until a release date is officially announced and it's not too late for summer yet - just getting tight.

Aha, the male nanny on Modern Family. Oh, and "beer pong guy no. 1" in Neighbors.

I don't know. He wouldn't be my first choice as Zac's brother, but I could see this pairing working in interesting ways. The movie doesn't have to be believable, just funny!

I was hoping for a bigger name but I looked around and everyone I liked as brother had other projects already lined up to film during that time, so I wasn't surprised when they announced Adam.

I hope they make up for the "lack of star power" by casting names into the female leads and other supporting parts.
kleth on March 2nd, 2015 08:12 pm (UTC)
Agreed regarding co-stars. After earlier experiences, I get nervous when I see Zac standing out there naked as the sole star in a movie, thus turning it into a "Zac Efron movie" and giving him all the blame when it doesn't do well. If Dirty Grandpa jumps without a 'chute, De Niro will at least share the blame.
The Writers Denmusewriter on February 27th, 2015 01:58 am (UTC)
They really did not plan this beach scene filming well. That's about the time schools in Georgia will be wrapping up for the summer, and I'm imaging a bunch of college girls flocking to Tybee in search of him. Having flashbacks to the AAP debacle in Sycamore, tbh. He didn't take many pics with fans in Atlanta, I can see him not doing it this time either just so he doesn't get mobbed.

Re: Greatest Showman on Earth. I would absolutely LOVE for him to do another musical (I miss his singing voice) but I just don't see it working with everything else he has lined up
kleth on February 28th, 2015 06:54 pm (UTC)
Another observation: You could puncture a tire on those cheekbones. What's he been doing, or is it all movie make-up magic?
