New comedy: 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates'
From Variety:
Zac Efron to Star in Fox and Chernin Comedy ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’

Zac Efron is set to star in Fox and Chernin Entertainment’s “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.”

Jake Szymanski is on to direct with Peter Chernin, David Ready and Jenno Topping producing for Chernin along with Jonathan Levine. Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien penned the script.

Story follows two brothers who place an online ad to find dates for a wedding and the ad goes viral.

Daria Cercek is overseeing the project for Fox.

Chernin and the studio will now look to fill the role of Efron’s brother and is hopeful this film has similar results it saw when it teamed Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy up for “The Heat."

As of now the movie has a release date set for 29 July 2016.

Glad to see another project right away. Even one which already has a release date and is a studio project. All good things.

I don't mind another comedy but I hope after this one, he mixes it up and does some other genres for a bit.* Comedy isn't bad at all but you don't want to get typecast into anything. In that sense, it's great that he has WAYF at least.

As for the movie itself, concept sounds ok to me. Perhaps not 'OMG how fantastic' but looks like it has potential if done right. The writers are did a good job with Neighbors, so hopefully they can do a good one here too. The director is a feature newbie but as I said to Cady, better a newbie than a known hack. He's done tons of Funny Or Die stuff (incl Zac's old one) and some SNL... so I think there is potential. Chernin is established and I like that Jonathan Levine is on board producing. Overall, the ingredients are decent, so it all comes down to execution. Fingers crossed.

The name of the movie could use a change though... way too long for social media age and not very memorable either.

Now we just have to wait for more info on filming and casting, esp the brother.

* I hope that also means, he's not doing Threesome because I thought that script was terrible.

Isn't Threesome the female-led movie?

I would've liked that one :(

Yes, it had female leads. I wanted to like it but I hated the script and thought it was awful. With the new one happening it would be also a bit too much comedy for my taste.

"I don't mind another comedy..."

Agreed. And in Zac's case, he has added protection because he doesn't play the ha-ha roles in comedies; he's usually the straight guy around whom all the goofballs play.

Nonetheless, he really needs a successful studio drama to secure his "I can do it all" position in Movieland. After Neighbors, everyone feels confident in booking him for another comedy, but I don't think he is the first one they think of when casting a drama.

Considering this his is first genuine studio project post-rehab, I don't mind the comedy. He's still not at a point where he has tons of options and comedy is where studios trust him more rn. I just hope after this one, he won't do another one right away.

Yikes, that's a tough one.

Hey Dylan, want to be in a movie?

I could go for that. Double the Efron, double the fun, but my heart will always belong to eldest one.

Bee, have you seen any info on when this might film? It seems like the planning is pretty far along except for casting as you mentioned...

I haven't seen a projected start date on any of my sources so far. Which typically means, it's more than a few weeks at least, likely a few months. And considering they still have 18 months to the release date, they have plenty of time to get going since comedies don't have super long post-production. Could be anytime this spring or summer.

Has there been any other movement or news on Threesome since the announcement?

I wonder how the timing is going to work out. Will he film this and then Threesome, or Threesome then this? Or will filming overlap and he has to drop out of one?

Threesome was never an official announcement but a rumor from an industry site. They had been better with their rumors in the development area recently, so we posted it but it was never anything official or happening soon. And no, there hasn't been any development since. And they didn't have a director or any of the female leads, so it was never going to happen soon. Although as I said above... I personally hope Zac won't do it at all. Threesome has never been in the equation of what to film next.
