Update on 'Fire'
From Deadline:
EXCLUSIVE: Jesse Wigutow, who is writing the Tron sequel for Disney, has just closed a deal with Universal Pictures to script the graphic novel Fire, a pet project of Zac Efron, who is attached to star. Fire, based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and published by Icon Comics, is about a college student (Efron) who is recruited by the CIA only to find out he is being trained for a program that churns out expendable spies.

Efron and Bendis sold the project to Universal during Sundance three years ago with an eye for Efron to star from a script by Bendis. Wigutow previously worked on the Disney project Parallel and remake of The Crow and Lionsgate’s remake of The Osterman Weekend.

Fast & Furious 7 producing pro Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are set to produce through Original Films with David Engel of Circle of Confusion. Efron and Jason Barrett will serve as executive prods.

Uni’s VP Production Anikah McLaren and creative executive Chloe Yellin are overseeing the project with Michael Simkin on behalf of Efron’s production company, Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions.

it is still a long ways from being filmed but this is a step forward which is really nice, esp at a time where theoretically all the studios could walk away from as being too much trouble or too risky

It doesn't say AT Sundance, it says DURING.

I think they looked at the date the deal closed and assumed it was done at Sundance since that was within the festival dates, even though really they were in LA.

I'm happy that the project is still in development, even if it's not going to happen soon or perhaps at all.

I love that Uni is still spending money on it and with that on Zac, ie has some confidence in him turning things around. Aside from that, it's also nice for him to have some sort of project news on a symbolic level.

Let's hope that Neighbors does well at the box office; that could give Universal more confidence in Zac and encourage them to forge ahead with Fire.

I'm really looking forward to this project. I'm glad Zac is taking risks. Even if this film doesn't happen for a while, I'm excited. Zac is always looking for a challenge and this is definitely one of them.

I'm also encouraged because his production company is involved.

I hope this happens. But could the premise and star make a successful movie?

Wasn't Bendis himself writing the script? I guess his version is getting discarded by the studio...

I think Bendis even turned in a second attempt at the script, but I'm too lazy and disinterested to research the question. The fact that they are paying another writer to take a stab at it would seem to indicate that they are genuinely interested in the project.

Oooo, The Osterman Weekend. What a good movie that was.
