This is the camera angle she should try to do all fanpics from now on:

That's a great pic. It helps that he isn't wearing any ugly baseball cap.

My question is, I wonder why? Zac has always said that the odds were against his having a long career. I've been watching a lot of old movies lately and checking the credits, where I see name after name of actors I've never seen before or since. Most actors get one or two movies, then they disappear.

Except for Richard Linklater, all Zac's post-HSM directors have initially rejected him or expressed doubts about casting him, yet he keeps bobbing to the surface like a damned cork, booking role after role. Even he admits he's not the greatest actor in Hollywood. I can only think that he must have a terrific personal pitch, that he is so winsomely appealing that skeptical directors and producers just can't say no when they meet him face to face and he turns it all on.

Don't get me wrong, I think he can handle any role that interests him and I hope he works his ass off. But I keep wondering, why Zac and not all those other young hopefuls with equal or greater talent?

Why Zac? I think a lot of it is exactly what you said. He has charisma. He is special. And his work ethic is one that is desirable by most people. You've got these other (talented) actors who come on set and are divas and primadonnas and hard to get along with. Then you have Zac who isn't that. The only time he's held up a production was when he had appendicitis, and even then, he called the powers that be and APOLOGIZED for holding things up. Time is money. I also think that Zac is more talented than a lot of people, himself included, give him credit for. It may take some time, but eventually, he is going to shine in some role where it isn't expected. I think he showed something in the cameo in Liberal Arts. People were surprised by that. It'll happen. I'm looking forward to it too.

He has the attitude and disposition of a hungry student who says to her professor, "I don't understand it" or "I don't know anything about it, but I want to learn." These kinds of students endear themselves to professors, and professors will go out of their way to assist them BECAUSE of their humility coupled with their inquisitiveness and a good deal of initiative.

Zac has that attitude and it excites directors and producers. Also, they are probably encouraged and inspired themselves by him. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, one I've seen played out in the academic classroom.

I truly do believe humility has a lot to do with it. I clearly don't know the guy, but I don't believe he ever walks into a business meeting or onto a movie set thinking he is the best thing since sliced bread. There are a lot of other young guys who haven't been around as long as him *coughAlexPettyfercough* who like to think they are the best thing to happen. I don't believe Zac deep down believe's he is worthy of all of this, therefore he isn't going to act like he deserves all this attention or getting parts in movies that could have gone to another young actor. That humility and ability to show he doesn't believe he deserves to be there show's the directors he is going to work his ass off to make them happy. And at the end of the day that is what they want. They want an actor who is going to do the job, do it well, and with respect to other's around them. I don't remember who said it (might have been one of his directors/co-stars) but they said he's willing to put the work in, in order to get people's respect, and I truly believe that. I honestly don't believe he ever got a big head in Hollywood (even at his peak during the HSM days). Maybe that is a testament to his up bringing and his parents.

Plus, he clearly is a charming guy. We've seen him do it with his co-stars.

I know what you mean, but I don't think "humility" is the right term.

"I don't believe Zac deep down believe's he is worthy of all of this..." I think he is surprised, but I don't think he believes he is unworthy. That's why he works so hard, to justify his success to himself ("I may not be the most talented actor but I will work harder than anyone").

In addition to charm, he must possess the kind of confidence that convinces other people that he's the right guy for the part. Kenny Ortega described Zac's manner during the HSM audition as "ease and charm" so that even when he screwed up, it turned out better than if he had done it right. That ease indicates the confidence I'm talking about.

Richard Linklater, the only director who came looking to hire Zac, also testified to this when he said he cast Zac (after talking to him for "20 or 30 seconds") in M&OW because he needed a young actor who could play a teenager able to face off with Orson Welles, one of the most dominating personalities of the 20th century.

But Zac's real secret weapon is charm. He hates the idea because it's not something he can control. But I get the impression that many of the people he meets simply fall in love with him, regardless of age, gender, or status.

I agree with you completely.

Oh, I am SO excited. TLO is on HBO tonight. I don't know why I'm excited. I mean, it's not like I haven't owned the DVD since it came out, so I can watch it whenever I want. But there's something about it coming on actual TV that gets me all excited. I've also noticed that CSC has been showing on some cable TV stations.
kleth on February 17th, 2013 08:56 pm (UTC)
"I don't know why I'm excited."

Because Zac's developing image as a movie star probably depends more on his movies playing on cable TV than in theaters.

A lot of people still have the impression he's that singing and dancing teen idol guy from HSM. Having pre-judged him, they don't go to his movies when they are showing in theaters, and for the same reason they don't buy the DVDs when they come out. But people will watch anything on their TV, even movies that don't especially interest them if they've seen everything else that's on. Or, just channel flipping, their attention is captured by a scene from TLO, they start to watch it, and keep watching; you know how this works. Anyway, they finally see Zac in a non-musical, non-teen movie, and they acquire a whole new image of him.

Oh, I see. So that's why I'm excited. Thanks for letting me know. :-)

"The only time he's held up a production was when he had appendicitis, and even then, he called the powers that be and APOLOGIZED for holding things up."

Working through the pain until the end of the shooting day, then returning to the set after only 24 hours absence for surgery, is probably the story that has made Zac's reputation among producers and directors. "Hard working" is abstract. The appendicitis event provided a real example of his commitment.

However! Should Zac ever show his face around here, before I give him a big hug he will have to suffer a severe reprimand for acting like a hero and working all day with increasing appendicitis symptoms. If his appendix had ruptured, he might not have survived and would certainly have been hospitalized for a lot longer, impairing the production of 17 Again and endangering Me & Orson Welles, which was ready to shoot as soon as he was available (and he might even have screwed up HSM3, since he recorded his song tracks in London when he was there for M&OW and arrived on the HSM set like three weeks after everyone else even without any unexpected delay).
lilly4848lilly4848 on February 18th, 2013 03:32 am (UTC)
I don't think he knew it was appendicitis the whole time. The story he tells is that he just had this pain. Tom Lennon told him it was gas. Zac called his dad later and he told him to go to the hospital.

Love all the pics! Do we know if Parkland is still filming some stuff? I've heard of some sightings of Zac still in Texas so I was curious if it was still for work purposes.
Beejeezbee on February 22nd, 2013 12:30 am (UTC)
Parkland wrapped before Valentine's Day.
The Writers Denmusewriter on February 22nd, 2013 12:44 am (UTC)
That's what I thought...just wondered why he would still be hanging around in Texas...thought they might have some additional things to wrap up
Beejeezbee on February 22nd, 2013 12:47 am (UTC)
Idk, vacation? There are many reasons why he might stay but the movie wrapped.

I think he loves the place and made some good friends there. I wonder if he's staying there for the At Any Price screening at SXSW? But the screening takes place on the last day of the film festival: March 16.
