He looks really good, like REALLY good.

I do hope we get more hospital set pictures though.

They would make a cute gay couple.

Lol, you're so weird. I don't mean that as an insult. Your comments often provide just the right amount of 'wtf' to keep things interesting around here. ;)

The blue sky makes that second pic look really, really cool. I had heard they rebuild the hospital entrance on the lot, so it's cool to see it close-up.

I totally expect him to shave once he starts actually filming (if it hasn't happened yet); I can't see a surgery resident in 1963 having a stubble.

Hah! Now shaven as predicted. I wish he would do something about his jaw line and chin though. He looks so much better when his face isn't so wide and more tight.

Honest question: what/how could he really do something about it?

I'll come back to you with an answer tomorrow. I just came home and I'm dead tired.

i'll answer my opinion anyway, i think some overlaps with jeezbee. i think he is prone to facial fluctuations due to bone structure and genes. he gains any weight and it goes to his face first (especially cause it isn't something you can really tone) and he does not wear face weight well. plus, he's also just getting older, lol, and his metabolism is probably changing.

but i think the start really was when he gained weight for TLO and i think they did not do it smartly. i know he talked about what he ate but i'm sure they also used protein mixes etc and some of that stuff has a TON of calories in it and idt he did enough cardio.

and then i think secondarily, his diet is probably decent overall (esp when he's eating those premade meals) but he clearly likes to eat at the best restaurants so it wouldn't surprise me if he just overdoes it at times, especially on sodium which would cause water retention very quickly. and he also ofc drinks and like any frat boy can attest, it is easy to gain weight that way.

so imo opinion, he needs to amp up his cardio, watch sodium and alcohol intake since he's not low 20s anymore. it just gets harder to bounce back, and this one thing he should try not to emulate about leo d.

Sorry, it took a while and it got really long...

First of all, obviously Zac can do whatever he wants. It's his life and his decisions; if he likes his chubby face better, then this might be the way he will be. But at the same time, he has to live with the consequences of it. And if you go outside of the core fandom (who tbh is generally pretty blind about these things) you will notice that a fast increasing number of people comment on Zac's face negatively. Many people (including a significant share of commenter who found him very good looking before) think he lost his looks recently, his face looks fat, etc and don't find him attractive anymore. Btw, don't let yourself be misled by all the drooling eg on Twitter because those comments are coming to 90%+ from "old" movies and pictures etc; only a very small group of people would know how Zac('s face) looks right now.

As Cady already pointed out, I also think it all started with TLO but in general a lot is caused by his workout schemes and I suspect by his not caring about all the other factors like eating, drinking etc. It's not unusual for actors to gain weight or muscles for a movie but most of them also proactively make sure once the movie is completed that they get back in pre-movie shape. Zac is generally prone to face fluctuations but it looks to me that with every movie some of the face chubs (esp in the jowl and chin area) remained after he's done, on top of where he started before.... and it accumulates over time. It doesn't help that he seemed to be particularly negligent in terms of his lifestyle in the last year (I feel like due to the lack of any filming in 2012 he had no necessity to get in shape at all).

Not that I'm an expert on it at all but from my understanding those "get-buff-fast" programs actors use have like 2 main phases. First you build volume by eating a ton (like chicken and other protein and carb rich food but also all those food supplement stuff which can make your face puffy too) and through intense weight training you turn that intake into muscles; of course you can't work out your face, so there it will be just fat. But normally after you reached the muscle volume you want there is a second phase where the calorie intake is dramatically reduced while the weight training keeps going on - in this phase the body burns all that remaining extra fat you added during phase one and which hasn't been turned into muscles. A great example where this worked well was Charlie St. Cloud (you can see his face still being a bit fuller at the beginning of the movie but it's clear he lost all that extra face weight after a short while while he kept doing that workout program) but all movies after starting with TLO it appears like he didn't care or his trainer didn't watch out for this. Zac might have lost most of the body weight from TLO afterwards again but I have the feeling (and that seems confirmed by some of his comments in interviews) that didn't happened because he watched out for it but just because he ate less and obviously didn't have that intense weight training so the muscles weight went down. However, he never made sure he lost that face weight entirely which came with the build-up. And AWOD is a good example for this imo. Obviously he didn't add the same amount of muscles as for TLO but you could clearly see that in the last few weeks he had buffed up again for filming.... unfortunately he also added face weight during that training (personally I think his face is now fuller than it ever has been and clearly more than eg in September) and unlike TLO I doubt that he went to the gym every morning at 4am during filming to keep up the calorie burn... and it shows in his face.

Part 2:

In my opinion, most of all, Zac would need to give a damn about it all. I suspect, it hasn't really registered with him what effect those muscle build-ups and his eating have on his face; and it is probably not as visible in real life either. In the past, he probably never had to watch out for any of it but now his metabolism, age and eating/working habits have caught up with him. His metabolism is probably changing now (once again)... 25 is the age where this often happens. From what we know about him and cooking in combination of the sightings we get from him at restaurants (many burger, chicken and sandwich joints amongst it), I think it's also clear he's still eating whatever he wants. He just might have to be more careful about all this.

So, what can he do about the extra face weight? Imo he would need to be aware about it and act accordingly. Ie doing his muscle prep for movies slower instead of the fast buffing up and making sure the remaining fat layers are burnt off at the end and as Cady said watch his sodium/alcohol intake and other substances who cause a high body water retention. He can slack off in between movies a bit but he chose to be an actor where looks matter, so he might in the future have to put "making sure his face is in prime condition for filming" on his list of character preparation - just like other actors and actresses do. While some of the weight gain might be him getting older, I would guess that's only a small percentage of it; most of it is his own doing.

That might sound harsh but how many of the top actors/movie stars can you name with a round/chubby face? I can't come up with a name... they have all chiseled faces. The round faces are the comedy actors like Zach Galifianakis or Jack Black. Every time people like Russell Crowe add a few pounds, they get called out as bloated slob (and when was the last time Russell Crowe was considered a romantic leading man?). In Zac's chosen profession the media and audiences are brutal and if they "decide" he lost his looks, they will turn faster on him than he can count to three imo. And I don't want that to happen.

This is just 2.5 years apart but imo that's way more than just maturing. And I totally agree with Cady that he doesn't wear face weight well; his features are just not big and his bone structure isn't strong enough once he gets beyond a certain point. I think he has matured nicely (in terms of features) but personally I think the flub amongst his jaw and chin particularly isn't doing him any favors. The Hollywood perception of manly men is typically strong jaw etc, so this look might not do him any favors in terms of the roles he wants either.

But again, it's all Zac's call. Independently from my own preferences, I honestly hope all the best for him but I also know how brutal and superficial the industry is.

PS: Before anyone says he might do this because he doesn't want to be a heartthrob... I don't think that works this way. He will never look mediocre or plain - he will be either pretty/handsome or the fat pretty boy/the guy who lost his looks/got ugly. Being a pretty boy/heatthrob is as much about perception than about features. And even if he gets chubby, his features won't change. If he doesn't want to be perceived as a heartthrob or pretty boy, the solution is not to get a chubby face; it's to pick roles where looks don't matter that much. TLO, Paperboy or AWOD are not the movies you pick if you don't want your looks to matter. Plus, let's be real - looks matter for a movie star. Even for actors 40+ they matter. And Zac is not a character actor.

See, it doesn't bother me at all. He's getting a little age on him, and the weight fluctuations show in his face. Personally I love his chubby cheeks (both sets), but there's a fine line between a cubby face and a bloated one. Cubby signifies he's put on some man-weight - healthy eating, working out, ala hardworking lumberjack. Bloating is a sign for lots of bad things.

If I woke up to that cute face every morning, I'd be quite happy.

BTW: never type "Zac Efron naked" into Google images. The number of gay man photo manipulations will crash your computer. He is the gay universal.
