New Project - The Falling
From THR:
Zac Efron and Akiva Goldsman are teaming up for a mystery supernatural project at Warner Bros. titled The Falling.

Efron will star in the film and produce via his Warners-based Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions and Goldsman's Weed Road banner. Also on board to produce are husband-and-wife team Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures...

Every effort is being made to protect the logline of the project, which is being described as an edgy thriller centering around an otherworldly being.

The idea originated within the studio, which then presented it Goldsman and Efron. Goldsman and Harold, the screenwriter who worked on Warners' upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi movie All You Need Is Kill, then hammered out a story.

The producers will now undertake a search for a screenwriter to take Falling, which is a working title, to the next level of development.

Very promising! I'm glad they had the idea and then went to Zac, shows they still like him and his production company, lol. This is definitely important as WB is undergoing some management shifts and no one is sure where Jeff Robinov, Zac's main relationship there, will end up.

I'm glad to see a new development project even if it's still far off. It's important to fill the funnel with those, so some of them will eventually go into production.

I'm also glad that WB approached Zac. I hope this is actually a mystery thriller and doesn't slip into some cheap horror. That is the only small concern I have in regards to this project. I'm not 100% sold on Akiva Goldsman but there are worse producers and everyone has a few bad projects, so I'm hoping for the best here.

I hope it isn't a horror film, because I won't want to see it cuz I am too skeered to see horror films, but I will have to see it cuz Zac is in it, and then I'll be skeered of the dark and i'll have nightmares and I don't want Zac in my nightmares. :-0

I'm not a fan of horror movies either but my main concern about it is that the horror genre isn't very respected unless the movie is directed from GdT or another super high-profile director. Plus, they are typically cheap, not well written and rarely good movies. There are exceptions for good horror but those are far and in between (like Alien or Shutter Island are horror too).

That said, Akiva Goldsman's and Joby Harold's previous movies are more in the sci-fi/mystery thriller genre so I think (or at least hope) it won't turn into that.

Very interesting. Although probably at least three years will pass. But this news is confirmed to us that the contract with WB extended. It makes me happy :)

Zac is working all the time and I love that! He's either filming or doing promos, and between project he keeps lining up new projects! I've read this article twice, but can't figure out if Akiva Goldsman is producing or directing this...

It's a very intriguing project, and glad Zac is attached to star, and produce :) He's clearly proving people wrong with his roles/movies and that's something I as a fan am proud of.

OT but did Townies ever get location scouting/extra casting finalized?

Side note: Do we know if he's started filming Parkland yet? I keep hearing of random NYC sightings so I was confused. I'm really looking forward to that one so...

i don't think he's there yet. there was also that thing about him being on a guest list for a super bowl party in new orleans which is totally possible though no guarantee ofc.

Thanks, C! I'd heard via Twitter (consider the source) that he was supposed to be filming this week so I was confused lol

This Hollywood Reporter article says this: "Efron this week started shooting Parkland, (...)"

So, they are wrong? If he hasn't joined the Parkland cast, I wonder how long his screen time will be.

This question is very interesting for all of us. And everyone knows that the longer Zac not on the set, so this role is shorter.

Oh! I am very happy in this case! Please, can you show me a link or something where you saw this information. It was somewhere on Twitter, or something?

Looks like I'm gonna do some stalking in New Orleans, lol.

Btw, applied to the Creative Writing / Literature doctoral program at SoCal, but they only take 2 students per year (?!) and I imagine even with my top 5% GRE scores and 3.8 GPA I'm competing with perfect GRE's and 4.0s...it was a shot in the dark, a long shot, anyway. I applied because I feel I'm more a screenplay / play writer than a novelist, but I'll probably end up in Texas or Florida.

Well, at least it's a studio project. But ho hum, there have been almost a dozen "development" projects over the past few years, even one or two with studio sponsorship, and nothing has come of them. I'm still waiting to see the Ninjas production company logo on the big screen; I think I'll wet me pants when (and if) that ever happens.

AWOD was a Ninjas Runnin Wild production
kleth on February 2nd, 2013 07:38 pm (UTC)
It remains to be seen whether AWOD will ever be shown in theaters, or at least in enough theaters for some of us to be able to see it before the DVD comes out.

It will be kind of sad if AWOD is the movie that premiers the Ninjas logo. I don't think this movie is going to make a splash.

It doesn't hurt that two stars at Sundancetgis year are in it with lead roles. It'll be shown in theaters just probably not major theater chains

I don't see what's wrong with any of the development projects.

It is COMPLETELY NORMAL that development projects take several years AND that only few of them get made. You can look at any producers IMDb page, incl. Johnny Depp or Leo DiCaprio if you want to use other actors, and they ALL have 20+ development projects of which only few will get made. That is how the business works and it has nothing to do with Zac. It's simple math: studios put hundreds of new projects into development each year but only a relatively small percentage of them get made.

So, adding new development projects is a good thing - because the more he has in development, the more likely it is that some get made eventually. It was always clear that not all of those projects will happen (btw, he has 6 in development and all except one are actually studio projects; and even DIAG is with MRC who has an output deal with Uni).

It's really, really difficult to get a studio project into production, esp if it's not a sequel or some other CGI spectacle based on an existing property. Esp since Zac's projects are not in the wheelhouse of his fanbase.
