New Project - Parkland!

From Variety
Zac Efron and Marcia Gay Harden have joined the cast of "Parkland," the indie drama about the assassination of John F. Kennedy that will mark the directorial debut of scribe Peter Landesman.

Efron will portray Dr. Charles Carrico amd Harden has signed on to play the part of a nurse.

Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton and Jacki Weaver came on board during AFI in late October.

Variety first reported on Aug. 16 that Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman were producing "Parkland" and Exclusive Media came on board in October to produce and finance.

Pic chronicles the events leading up to JFK's assassination and Abraham Zapruder's famous documentation of the event. The title refers to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where Kennedy was rushed on Nov. 22, 1963 and later pronounced dead. Two days later, his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald died at Parkland.

As part of the production deal, Exclusive Media optioned the rights to the book which provides the source material for the film, "Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy" by former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi. The work was published in 2007 by W.W. Norton & Company and won the 2008 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime.

Landesman is adapting the screenplay. The film, to be shot in Austin, Texas, is being planned for a 2013 U.S. theatrical release to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

From Deadline:
“Zac Efron continues to impress us with his recent shift into more dramatic roles which showcase his exceptional acting skills and Marcia Gay Harden is an unparalleled actress who gives tour de force performances in every film she appears. We look forward to seeing their combined talent in Peter Landesman’s powerful and mesmerizing story alongside the excellent cast already attached to this film,” said Guy East and Nigel Sinclair.

Latest production news seems to have filming starting January 12th in Austin but at this point, who knows how many days Zac (or any of the cast) will have to be there for.

Also, from other googling and the testimony in the Presidential investigation, Dr. Carrico was actually a second-year surgery resident at the time of the shooting. At the time of the shooting, Carrico was probably about a year older than Zac is, so the plausibility of him being a doctor isn't that off. To read Dr. Carrico's testimony, click here.

Super excited - that cast is awesome!

This project makes me all around happy!

Interesting and great topic, killer cast, great producers and it films basically right after AWOD. The writer/director is a newbie but I hope the rest of the cast is a testament that he's promising.

This is something I'm really looking forward to. Just what I needed after I'm not so high on AWOD.

ETA: I'm also totally thrilled with the role itself. The cameo in Liberal Arts aside, this will be basically his first role where he isn't playing a character with a love interest, and playing a doctor (or resident) no less. It's going to be completely different and probably challenging for him. I love that.

" I'm also totally thrilled with the role itself"

Yes, a real step in his career. I wonder why they picked him for this non-romance, non-musical, non-comedy part. Hopefully, this will open some other doors.

negl, when I saw he was a doctor I was a little skepctical but I can believe on him as resident 100%. This sounds like a very interesting project and even though I don't know how big the role is, it is very different from what he usually does so hopefully he will impress us (and critics).

Sounds very very exciting!

ps: Any news on You Belong to Me? Is it still happening?

IA. My first reaction to the doctor was also that I thought he is a bit young to be convincing (in Hollywood terms) but a resident should be fine.

The initial Variety announcement from this summer says "Playtone's "Parkland" will be an ensemble film that explores the impact the assassination had on a wide range of characters in and around Dallas on that fateful day, including an FBI agent, a young doctor, a reporter, several Secret Service agents, Kennedy's staff, Oswald's older brother, Jackie Kennedy and Zapruder." and other stories say the movie focuses on the events in the hospital. Based on that I would speculate that his role is supporting in nature (like basically everyone else) but it should have a solid size. We'll see.

As for You Belong To Me - I haven't seen any movement since the announcement which basically means, we don't know. It could be all moving forward behind the scenes as planned (although I wouldn't really rely on the March date we've got... just assume sometimes spring), or it got stuck or delayed. It's more or less wait and see until we either get some casting announcement or other BTS info, or we will just hear nothing in which case we know it's not happening. Indie financing is so fragile though that delays happen more often than not, so personally I wouldn't rely too much on it happening until we get more news.

So, Parkland would be like Bobby? But while in Bobby the focus was on people who were at the hotel where RFK was murdered, this will be on the hospital that they took JFK too? It has potential.

And thanks for the info on YBTM!

I guess Parkland having a january start date means they probably have everything secured and it should happen, right?

I think 2013 will be a very exciting year for Zefron :) Especially if Townies at least shoots that year and he will have a studio movie for early 2014.

Lol, I've left the first part of the sentence off which was "Like Emilio Estevez's Golden Globe-nominated 2006 drama "Bobby,"" - so yeah, it appears to be like Bobby but focusing on the events in the Parkland hospital.

I wouldn't be surprised if the start date of Parkland moves back a week or two (since that happens almost all the time) but the project will happen barring some really unforeseen events. It's already crewing up.

I hope Zac has more projects to film in 2013, esp since he won't have any significant promo obligations. I hope he has at least one studio project (two would be better but one would be ok) and I would love it if Townies happened too. It's a bit early to count the chickens for 2013 yet imo but I certainly hope he's more active than in 2012.

And in "Bobby" remember, we got to see Shia's cute little tushy. Not that I think anything like that will happen in "Parkland" with Zac.

I see Zac got my letter about him playing a doctor. All joking aside, this looks promising and I'm very excited for this.

Dr. Carrico's testimony is very interesting, indeed. Thank you for that.

Extra info about the character Zac is playing, but here's a good article about Dr. Charlies Carrico (picture of him from 1964 included) http://www.jfklancer.com/3Patients.html

"Zac Efron continues to impress us with his recent shift into more dramatic roles which showcase his exceptional acting skills..."

I can read stuff like that all day.

If he keeps his wardrobe, he will be able to "play doctor" at home too.
