Yesterday, I read many good reviews about «At Any Price». It was wonderful! I was so excited!

But today I read new reviews about «The Paperboy», it sounds awful, creepy, disgusting and stupid... I think I'm afraid to see this movie...

Yeah, I just read a review and I think I understand why it received an F. Scenes can be gross and icky IF they are necessary to plot or character. A good example is the scene in Deliverance when the hillbilly is yelling "Squeal, squeal, squeal like a pig" and Bobby is down on his knees, squealing like a pig, and then the redneck anally rapes him. Rather than insinuating homosexuality, it insinuates beastiality, as these people never venture into outside of their secluded part of the country.

That's a very disturbing scene, but it furthers the plot in a dramatic way that if it hadn't happened, the characters would have been less moved for their survival and the audience less personally involved in it. I think Daniels is trying for that kind of thing, but he delivers it in ways that are neither necessary for the plot nor for character development. What we get is gratuitous "ewhs", and that doesn't bode well with critics or audience members.

Yes.
Such disgusting reviews have been written about «Shadowboxer». There was also a very strong cast as well, but the movie was shit.
too bad, the very first review of «Paperboy» were very promising ... But things have changed ...

"creepy, disgusting and stupid"

Some people would consider that a "got to see it" review.

I also wanted to see it.
But I would like to see the role of risk brought Zac respect, not universal ridicule.

Everyone's performances are liked it's the directing and style they seem to not like.

Soon we shall see.

The reviews from Cannes all basically said performances were good, directing and style wasn't.

I read them all.
If you compare how praising Zac's performance in AAP, praise in The Paperboy looks like indulgence ... In the context of the film exploits all the cast does not look like a decent job ... While we all understand what they went for this project.
But despite all this, I still have hope that this film will receive something good. For example, good directors will begin to trust Zac interesting roles. In this case, all risks justify themselves.
