I'm going into the social media thing with an open mind now that he has a new, better publicist. At least the tweets are grammatically correct and work related, and not catering to a teen idol fan base. I will be optimistic until given a reason not to be.

Looking forward to the shoot though. Lots of more professional actors have been in black book so I'm excited

The content is nice to restart the tweeting for the TLO DVD promo (for the short time they are probably tweeting again). The video is good and even the writing of the tweet is fine.

BUT

I hate that they are impersonating him again.

It's blatantly obvious it's not from Zac. And I maintain that they are doing him a disservice with it. I liked that it was special when he actually tweeted during the main TLO promo and it wasn't pretended to be permanently him when it wasn't. It's the same discussion/argument we had here on the journal when it first started. Aside from the fact that the writer just doesn't match his style, a 3rd person tweet can be more obvious in terms of promotion without having Zac look bad. I hope this was a once off but I'm afraid it isn't. :(

I agree about the content, but I hate this! It's already turned into chaos on twitter with people thinking that it's actually Zac.

It drives me crazy - the countdown of no tweets - the trends they were/are trying to start - the begging to be followed.

Why can't they just get this right?! Frustrating!

Same! Drama, drama and drama. I guess I will be on facebook.
Beejeezbee on August 13th, 2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
The tweet would have been perfect if it had been in 3rd person which makes it all more frustrating.

There will always be the frenzy with people begging to be followed and retweeted, I just hope they are trying to actually grow up his twitter now that Paperboy and At Any Price is coming out and stop catering to the kids even if they are promoting the TLO DVD. I want Zac to have a classy and mature twitter and not cheap tweeny crap. (And I'm convinced you can totally have a classy promotional twitter focused on work).

I also hope they are smart enough to ignore everything in regards to John John Denim and Penshoppe on his social media platforms. They are both international endorsements and I hope they try to keep his US image as clean as possible by not acknowledging them at all. I was dismayed enough that his recent ad campaign hit all the US blogs.

*sigh*

I guess I'm back at the starting point again by hoping that at least they go back to 3rd person.
ZacEfron_newszacefron_news on August 14th, 2012 12:39 am (UTC)
Another great way for them to have come back would have been for them to announce that AAP was going to Venice and TIFF. They could have done that 3rd person. Cannes was another missed opportunity.

You had edited your other post as I was responding, but it does feel like the first time all over again when we had discussed it. When he switched PR, I had hoped for something good to come of the social media since the first go around was a bit messy from the get-go. Outside of his twitter convo (Q&A) and his videos and pics from the promo tour - the rest should just be done away with. IA with your comments - especially moving away from the tweeny crap. There is no reason why they can't turn this twitter around for the better - but starting out with a tweet in first person was not the way to go.

It also still baffles me when I see a couple of twitters that are followed by Zac's account still promising others that they will get Zac to follow them. I would like to think that those being followed would respect the account and not swarm them with DMs. However, the person who handled his account through TLO tour seemed to thrive on those that kept praising 'Team ZE' so I guess that goes hand in hand, and hence why most of it was a mess.

Regarding John John - I can't look at those pictures with a straight face. I hope we get to see the actual commercial b/c then maybe the pictures won't seem as cheesy.

Zac did a new photoshoot? Is it for The Paperboy? I wonder how much promo they will do for the movie. Zac did a magazine cover(Nylon Guys) and appeared in a couple of talk shows for Me and Orson Welles and it was a limited release as well.

Oh man! I saw it on my personal and said to myself 'are they posting old stuff or?' Lol
Went to @ZacEfronPT and couldn't even breathe. Hope they use it well and promote his work (not the crazy fans).

Re: yes
He changed publicists after TLO promo. I've already posted about it.
The Writers Denmusewriter on August 14th, 2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Here I was hoping that the days of "impersonating" him on twitter were over. Actually I was hoping that the change in publicists would mean a Twitter overhaul but that doesn't seem likely if this is any indication...
Sapphirasapphia on August 14th, 2012 08:22 am (UTC)
Thanks :)

Zac got a beautiful falcon and a good suit. looks good.

His social media accounts are not run by his publicist, they are run by a social media manager. He has the same one as Nicholas Sparks. So people who are expecting the tweets to suddenly change because he is a new publicist, will be waiting awhile. The changes we should see in Zac with a new publicist are in the types of promo/appearances he does, how he answers questions and what questions he chooses to answer; and his overall image in public.
Miranda gives everyone a chancemirandagirll on August 14th, 2012 12:33 pm (UTC)
The social media manager same as Nicholas Sparks was only for The Lucky One.
Beejeezbee on August 14th, 2012 01:46 pm (UTC)
We were hoping for improvements because social media is part of the overall PR strategy and not the other way around. So obviously with a new publicist the existing PR strategy would be evaluated and adjusted which should apply to the social media as well. The social media manager shouldn't work independently but everything in alliance to the overall plan & strategy. SM is part of his image and ultimately his publicist has to be involved and should push the overall agenda, no matter who is actually handling the twitter/FB accounts and for which purpose (DVD promotion). Zac's overall image should always set the rules and triumph individual goals like selling the DVD.

And we're very well aware who had been running Zac's social media during TLO promo. We knew long before it became public. And since it appears to be (at least partly if not entirely) for TLO DVD promotion, it's very well possible that the same person is now posting on his accounts again. All the more it's frustrating that they are impersonating Zac since we already went through that back in March and they figured it out back then that 3rd person might be the better way.

The thing I don't understand is, assuming it's the same person who handled his accounts during TLO promo, she handles accounts for Channing Tatum and Nicholas Sparks as well and WB (I think). You would think someone who handles high-profile accounts would be well aware of social media etiquette (i.e. don't impersonate the celebrity). It's kind of mind-boggling how badly they screwed up around TLO promo though they did get better, it wasn't by much. Take one look around Twitter and there are people who are pissed at "Zac" for abandoning his account. It's kind of crazy but just another consequence of mismanagement I suppose.
Beejeezbee on August 14th, 2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
She works for studios like WB only on a case by case base afaik.

In regards to impersonation. That's actually fairly common. Both, Sparks and Channing are impersonated. And a LOT of celebs esp music artists have their management tweet for them at least partially.

But there is a difference to Zac imo.

For one, the person doing the tweeting on Zac's account just can't match his style, not even remotely. I can eg see the beginning of yesterday's tweet coming from Zac ('made a new friend') but the second part of the tweet is clearly not him. And examples in the past were even way worse. By default, ghost-tweeting is most of the time less the celebrity but Zac's SM person doesn't really know him at all.

Secondly, and more importantly, the celebs who get impersonated typically want to be on twitter and just use a SM person as a convenience. Having a ghost tweeter takes care of doing the research to get the proper links for whatever you're chilling, makes sure nothing is forgotten, optimizes stuff, etc. Having a SM person is taking care about all the thing which need to be tweeted/posted without having to worry about anything. But the celebs themselves are perfectly fine with having a permanent online presence. And most of them tweet themselves in between, often with personal stuff.

Zac on the other hand, still doesn't really want a twitter and be present and accessible 24/7. He just has one because he knows of the necessity of selling his movies. Unless his personal opinion has changed recently Zac has always wanted to remain as private as possible and that was the reason why he never got a social media presence before. Tweeting himself (or should I rather say having tweets in 1st person) creates the impression that Zac is 24/7 accessible for his fans on his twitter, even when he isn't. That's why having 'Team ZE' tweet in 3rd person most of the time is a much better strategy for Zac imo. It still allows him to maintain the idea that he's not ~really~ on twitter and is not accessible through it. Plus, it makes the few times where he actually comes online and tweets himself all the more special. It's the same concept he's applying to his PR as well; he's trying to stay out of the media for most part and not giving permanently random interviews either - less is more.

The other aspects which apply to actors more than other celebs, if you have a SM person tweeting in 3rd person, you can be much more blatant about promotion than doing it in 1st person (I know Channing does that but he's not Zac); at least it doesn't come off as self-centered as doing it in 1st person.

I just think that for Zac's situation where he still wants to be as much aloof online as he can be, 3rd person tweets are a much better solution.

As for people being pissed about Zac's account being dormant... personally my preferred solution would be to have a few very rare tweets in between promo periods (like 1 tweet every 6-10 weeks or when there is a special work-related occasion like Cannes, TCA, etc) but I rather take dormant over permanent tweets. However, the people complaining should be just ignored imo; those are the same tweens who beg for follows, retweets etc. They will never be happy unless they get to talk with him on a daily base, preferably about his private life and they will never get that anyway. "Normal" followers don't complain because other actors don't tweet permanently either.

ETA: Sorry for the novel. That got longer than even I expected. lol

"the people complaining should be just ignored imo; those are the same tweens who beg for follows, retweets etc. They will never be happy unless they get to talk with him on a daily base, preferably about his private life and they will never get that anyway"

So right. I just can't believe the credulity of these people. If Zac follows anyone on twitter, it will be people important to him. I can see him following Adam Shankman, but why would anyone believe that he is actually following some unknown teen in Madison, Wisconsin?

Third-person posts are entirely effective for social media strategy. What we want is authentic information, and we can assume that his social media person is not making stuff up like the National Enquirer. The post under discussion here would have been just as welcome and informative if it began, "Zac made a new friend today..." We just like to know what he's doing. Sending fake first-person posts adds nothing to the content, it's just non-genuine and thus shows a lack of respect for the recipients.
kleth on August 17th, 2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Jeez, I sure hope he goes to Venice and/or Toronto and stirs up some buzz. These consecutive days with nothing new to discuss are just so boring. What idiot said that no news is good news???
Miranda gives everyone a chancemirandagirll on August 18th, 2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
He's going to Venice. I saw something sort of a confirmation.

I'd rather have no news because he's working on finding a new movie than random news everyday. But that's just me.

Just got my computer back with its new, shiny (not-so-shiny; windows won't update) hard drive and that John John shoot is WOW! WOW! WOW! Love him in smokey eye shadow - very sexy!

Something about his appearance in the shoot reminds me of Adam Lambert. I can't say what it is - maybe it's the make-up or hair - I don't know, but it's definitely a positive influence!
