I pray At Any Price and Zac's performance in it get amazing reviews and Zac gets cast in lots of great movies after that. Even if that doesn't happen, I hope the movie at least changes people's perception about Zac. To be honest, I'm envious that Rob started to get respect as an actor from movie fanatics thanks to Cosmopolis.

I've read an article titled "100 most valuable movie stars in Hollywood" recently and according to them, Zac's likeability among general public is only 38(out of 100). That's the same score as Tom Cruise! I can't believe Zac is hated as much as Tom. Then I noticed Rob got only 31. It seems everyone hates these teen idols except their fanbase. No wonder studios are hesitant to cast them in big movies. So, I think the first thing Zac has to do is get credibility as an actor. I'm okay with him doing independent movies as long as he keeps getting quality roles. But it's sad that I won't be able to see his movies at the movies because independent movies hardly get theatrical release in my country.(unless they get Oscar nomination)

Yeah, Zac's likeability number puts him on #98 out of 100 - 3rd to last even below Sean Penn and others. Only Sasha Baron Cohen (I'm surprised about that one) and Rob (who is last) are below him.

Which just reenforces what many of us have been saying for a long time, he needs to stop doing those entirely female skewing movies because it makes everyone outside of that narrow target demo of sappy romances (esp the guys) hate him even more than they already do. The longer he stays in that realm, the harder it will be to get out of it.

The other problem is that Zac's box office numbers haven't been that great in the last few years with his bigger successes being now back several years.

As I said recently, I liked the last few choices even if they didn't all totally work out but imo he really needs to stay away from romantic dramas/rom-coms and other hated (female and teen skewing) genres/movies for longer. There were some rumors flying around a bit ago but those were rom-coms and I hope he won't go for them unless they have a really great director and script which would make up for it (none of them had that though).

Clearly, great minds think alike.

I particularly endorse the point about box office. Apparently, 17 Again was a false dawn. Since then, his solo movies have been weak at the box office.

Last year was an annus mirabilis with important roles in two indies from hot directors, leading to this year's street-cred earning appearances at Cannes, Venice, and Toronto. He may yet become perceived as an actor rather than an idol.

Well, he only made 2 studio movies since then and TLO did ok at the box office, not great but it was solid in the US and he opened it well. But that one movie is just not enough over a 3 year period since CStC disappointed. At least not enough to overcome his downsides when it comes to casting him in studio projects which aren't his bread-and-butter demo.

I rank TLO right down their with CStC for box office. On opening weekend, CStC pulled something like $12.4 million. TLO opened bigger, but the exit poll said 56 percent of the audience came to see Zac. 56 percent of the box office was $12.5 million.

That seems to be the figure Zac can tattoo on his forehead for his solo movies (and that's for studio movies in wide release).

This guy really needs a hit.

Sorry for the late reply.

This logic doesn't really make any sense to me?

It's not like 100% of the CStC audience came for Zac. While I don't have any numbers to compare, I would expect that the 56% for TLO are really high because otherwise the studio wouldn't have released this number. The CStC percentage is probably similar or potentially even smaller.

Thanks for responding, late or not.

Upon further analysis, I think you may be right. But let me explain my possibly faulty thinking. Both CStC and TLO were solo "Zac movies" because none of the other cast shared his high profile. But in addition to that, CStC was actually marketed as a Zac movie (the supernatural element was not promoted successfully), so I count basically 100 percent of the opening weekend crowd as his audience. Why else would anyone have gone to see CStC? But in TLO Zac had a marketing partner, Nicholas Sparks. Apparently, Sparks has a following who turn out for his movies; he even participated in some of the promos to alert his own fans. So thanks to the audience survey showing 56 percent Zac fans, I assumed the rest were Sparks fans -- there must be some reason that TLO opened bigger than CStC; it didn't have any other hook. I may also have been mesmerized by the exact match between CStC opening box office and TLO's opening 56 percent. I mean, what are the chances?

"It seems everyone hates these teen idols except their fanbase. No wonder studios are hesitant to cast them in big movies. So, I think the first thing Zac has to do is get credibility as an actor."

It's his only way out of the hole he's standing in. It's hard for those who are entranced by Zac Efron to comprehend just what a handicap his early status as a teen idol and "Disney star" is. As hard as it is to accept, lots of potential movie goers don't like him because he is "that guy."

I should have said "because they #think# he is that guy." Having made up their minds who Zac Efron is, they don't give his bio or his subsequent work a fair look. It's prejudice, not judgement.

Zac and DeNiro have the same studio score which I found interesting,
Beejeezbee on July 26th, 2012 04:50 pm (UTC)
That's because DeNiro is too old to be a traditional leading man. If he were younger, it would be very different.

Ah, ok.

Idk theres something off about that list. Like Lautner is ranked way higher than Pattinon, and I figured he'd be the highest ranking twilight person on the list, but no.
Beejeezbee on July 26th, 2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
That's because Taylor's likeability quotient is higher and he hasn't made any indies which lower his BO average like Rob. That's why.

Like idg that. How is Taylor more likable than Rob? Hasn't Taylor only had one movie outside of Twilight (not counting the little roles he did before Twilight)? Idg why they would make a list where indies old hurt your BO average. It's like they're intentionally setting their standards a certain way so certain stars get placed at certain ranks.

The only thing is I am glad for is that at least on the list, so at least he isn't a total un-wanted actor. Idk the studio score was higher than I thought it would be, so people want to put him in movies.

How is Taylor more likable than Rob?

It's nothing the authors of that article determine. It's done via a research company who does surveys on it. (Not some internet polls which are stuffed by fans but proper research.)

And some of that has imo to do with the fact that Taylor's role in the franchise is not the love interest but the action-y part. Plus, as shitty as Abuction might have been, it's still less offensive to guys than some of Rob's movies who has also done romantic driven ones.
