'At Any Price' is going to TIFF

According to Variety, Ramin Bahrani's At Any Price will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival 2012 in Special Presentations. TIFF runs Sep 6-16, 2012.

The official announcement from TIFF with confirmation is in a few hours (their press conference starts at 10am EST today) but Variety spilled the beans a bit early and is a reliable source.

What does that mean for Venice? We will find that out on Thursday but the Variety announcement says it's a world premiere so it looks like it will only play in Toronto and not go to Italy. TIFF is a very prestigious international festival as well, so it's not any concern at all if the movie premieres at TIFF. (Bee)

ETA: The press conference just ended and while Variety seems to have gotten the movies which premiere in Toronto right, they did make a small mistake with At Any Price. According to the official press release from TIFF, At Any Price will have its North American premiere in Toronto, not its world premiere. Which means it will premiere somewhere else before, most likely in Venice. More about that on Thursday, when they announce their line-up.

ETA 2: First official movie stills

Logline from the TIFF website:

Zac Efron, Dennis Quaid and Heather Graham star in this drama from acclaimed director Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo), about a rebellious son whose dreams of becoming a professional race-car driver are derailed when his father's farming empire becomes the target of a high-stakes investigation.

I expected it to go to Venice but TIFF is probably better in terms of finding a distributor anyway (since more US buyers are there vs Venice). Thematically the movie is also a better fit for TIFF than Venice, the only reason why Venice was so expected has always just been Bahrani's own affiliation with the Lido but since they have a new artistic director there this year, it's perhaps not that huge a surprise after all.

Now I'm just crossing my fingers for the movie and Zac to do well. I'm really looking forward to it. :)

I'm curious to see Cameron Bailey's movie description/snippet... if Zac does really well in the movie we might be getting a first hint in there already. Can't wait for that to go up.

Thanks for the news of Bee!
I'm also really looking forward to it. :)
Crisscross my fingers.

Totally agree about the TIFF vs. Venice thing. And I think being premiered at TIFF means it has better chance to get theatrical release this year rather than next year since TIFF takes place in September.

Venice actually takes place right before TIFF, so idt it has any impact on a potential release date. I'm not surprised it plays at TIFF but I was sort of thinking it might world premiere in Venice and then play TIFF right after.

Said that, imo the film would only come out this year if they expect it to have awards chances. If it's "just" a good movie, I would expect it next spring or summer (which fits with the topic) as counterprogramming. The distributors' release calendars are already full this year, so it would need to be really, really good for them to squeeze it in this fall/winter imo.

OMG Venice is in Sep, too? Embarrassing...(I'm embarrassed about my mistake of thinking it takes place in Oct, not about the movie not going to Venice) Then, it won't go to Venice after all. Can The Paperboy go to Venice instead? I thought if one of Zac's films goes to Toronto it would be The Paperboy and At Any Price will go to Venice. Still, it's great that At Any Price will premiere at TIFF.

Anyway, I think of Juno when I hear of TIFF. So I get impression that TIFF is more "commercial" film festival than Venice. Hopefully At Any Price gets picked up by a good distributor in Toronto!

Venice is from 29 August to 8 Sep. I didn't think that The Paperboy being in Toronto was very likely after the Cannes response; possible yes but I didn't expect it. Venice is not an option for it either - it already played in Europe and it's not awards-worthy enough to find it's way in anyway.

I think TIFF has overall a bit more mainstream movies than eg Cannes but it does have it's fair share of others as well. TIFF is just a huge festival with many English language titles which makes it by default more commercial than foreign language films. Plus, studios/distributors/producers use the festival to premiere their awards hopefuls which have already a fall date to build WOM, which makes it also look more commercial.

I've just updated the post... Variety got the world premiere info wrong and it looks like it will premiere in Venice beforehand after all. :)

This is so amazing. I watched the press conference online hoping for a clip, but the video kept freezing and I couldn't reallly hear or see much. They didn't show any clip of At Any Price, did they?

Anyway, I'm really excited it's probably going to both Toronto and Venice. Zac's movies are covering a lot of big film festivals, from Sundance, Cannes, to Toronto and probably Venice, in the same year. I can't believe it. Hope At Any Price brings wonders to his career.

TIFF definitely has become massive over the years, with an even more amazing line-up of celebs

it's also a lot easier and cheaper to stay in toronto than venice, i feel. plus toronto is basically the size of italy hah

You are just a wealth of industry knowledge. Sometimes you make my head explode. (-:

Congrats to Zac! It's amazing that he has two films screened at Cannes and Toronto in the same year. :)

That's still a big honor. Hasn't he had a movie, Me and Orson Welles, premiere at TiFF before too? Or is this his first one? But anyways congrats to Zac and he rest of the cast and crew. I don't remember but I watched something that was directed by Ramin Bahrani and couple weeks ago, and it was beautifully made so hopefully that's how At Any Price is.

M&OW showed at Toronto with Zac in attendance. It was well received, but as we all know now, financial panic in the film industry at that time scared away all the potential distributors, so doing well at TIFF made no difference. Let's hope conditions have improved and At Any Price will not only impress everyone but will find a distributor. The problem may be, "Who is this movie's natural audience?"
Miranda gives everyone a chancemirandagirll on July 24th, 2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I saw the reviews from TIFF for M&OW and they were really good. So let's hope At Any Price reviews are good, if not better, and that it finds a distributor.

"The problem may be, "Who is this movie's natural audience?""
It's a good question!
I hope this is a serious film, which will be of interest to all, but mostly adults.

OMG! I like the movie pic with Zac. I have not seen this one.

Southern good ole boys into cars. If you swung a cat you'd hit one where I live.

NASCAR and racing is BIG BUSINESS on the East Coast, esp South of the Mason-Dixon line.

But will those good ole boys go to a Zac Efron flick?
countessm3countessm3 on July 25th, 2012 11:47 am (UTC)
If it's got hot cars and hot ladies, yes. Cars and girls (rolls eyes).

I feel like Zac and Nicole have a lot of chemistry together. Idk but dead.and.gone. from the first still.
Sapphirasapphia on July 24th, 2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah...
But I hope that this chemistry is not only on the photo looks convincingly but on the screen too. Will be a pity if it is not ...
