misc. upcomings and goings
Jeff Wells recently posted about Liberal Arts wondering why there hasn't been any publicity or website given it is coming out in two months and suggested the distributor, IFC, wasn't that keen on it.

IFC responded with:
Update: IFC Films bigwig Ryan Werner says "everything is coming momentarily on Liberal Arts. We've been working with Josh this summer on the materials, etc. And we just did a NYC screening and party at BAM Cinemafest and the film played huge. We remain super enthusiastic."

So that's good news. I can't wait :)

In less positive news, I'm a little concerned about This is Where I Leave You. Last we saw, Adam was scouting locations a month ago. In the meantime though, Rock of Ages underwhelmed both financially and critically. And Jason Bateman tweeted on July 10th that filming of Arrested Development "starts in four weeks" which to me indicates he'll be busy filming that in the fall, overlapping the intended filming period for TIWILY. Further Adam has said nothing and responds to no questions about the project, which is unusual for him, and I haven't seen any production info popping up on any of the databases. So it seems like something fell apart somewhere along the way. I have mixed feelings if this did happen. My main reservation has always been Adam. I love Adam for Hairspray and supporting Zac but his track record otherwise as a director is pretty dim. Otherwise though, I liked the cast, the book, and Zac's character. I liked that it was comedy more than romance for him. And Zac could definitely use a studio project. I guess hopefully it was just pushed back a bit. But I really can't wait for Zac to get back to real work, not just promo. So whatever is happening, I hope he gets back on set soon.

In better news, we should hear next week if At Any Price made it into Venice and TIFF. Fingers crossed. I'm also curious if The Paperboy might screen at TIFF. As a side note, in the upcoming weeks, Liberal Arts will screen at the Traverse City Film Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival and the New Zealand 2012 International Film Festival.

That's good news for Liberal Arts. I know it's a small part, but I really want to see Zac as that character.

TIWILY really does need to happen even if filming starts a little later than predicted. Hasn't it been said in previous posts that it is likly that At Any Price will screen at the Venice Film Festival?

bahrani has a history with the venice film festival so a lot of people expect at any price to get a spot but the announcement isn't until july 26th.

Well I'm happy to here things are working out with Liberal Arts and At Any Price. I'll try to stay positive on TIWILY, because it really was a good book and should be a great movie, although I do agree it should have a better director. I like Adam (though critics aren't in love with him) but TIWILY will certainly be a complicated movie to direct with all the different sub-plots and character personalies, and I just feel it should have a director that can handle those element. Either way I'll keep the faith and I help everything works out with all the projects.

I do think by now that TIWILY unfortunately has fallen apart - at least for now. I liked the project too (with the same reservations), so I'm not happy about it.

Zac needs to get back to work, he hasn't filmed anything for almost a year now (and promo is no excuse imo, other actors promote their movies just fine next to filming new ones). Of course I don't want him to just take an awful project but he should have enough buzz right now to get something halfway decent if his agent isn't a total failure.

"he hasn't filmed anything for almost a year now"

But isn't that how TLO came about? He filmed CSC then basically went a year without filming anything then filmed TLO. I don't think we want a repeat of TLO. As much as I did personally enjoy the movie, I can see that we probably don't want a repeat of TLO/NYE.

That's interesting about TIWILY...I do hope it proceeds or that he films something soon. Hearing about him going on vacation is getting boring, get back to work;)
annabelle83 on July 19th, 2012 02:50 am (UTC)
If TIWILY doesn't happen, I hope Townies gets fast-tracked and he starts filming it soon. I wonder if his roles in both films are somewhat similar other than them being a bad boy.

Fingers crossed for At Any Price. Hopefully Zac and the movie get raves at movie festivals so that studios will take chances on him. Despite the favorable reviews he got from The Paperboy, he'll be remembered mostly for being urinated by Nicole Kidman. If the movie is as bad as the majority of critics said, I'd rather want the movie doesn't get released in cinema. It'll better be forgotten.
Miranda gives everyone a chancemirandagirll on July 19th, 2012 03:02 am (UTC)
The Paperboy doesn't need to be forgotten. I think there's a difference in being "bad" and "polarizing" which The Paperboy is "polarizing.". I think it was mentioned in early posts that the biggest problems critics had with The Paperboy was Lee's directing style, but thought the acting was good, Basically, anything that showcases Zac as a good actor does not need to be forgotten.

i would love for zac to be back to work but i think part of his strategy right now is to see how the paperboy and at any price do once they are released to the public, even if they're not wide releases. even if the movies are polarizing and not everyone's cup of tea, his performances seem to be getting good reviews (at least for the paperboy) and that could be huge for him especially in the eyes of other directors and whatnot. it's obvious zac is more concerned with being an actual actor and not just doing major studio work where he would get an easy paycheck and fame so while it would be nice to not always have to wait so long for new projects, i would much rather wait than see him turn out crap like some other actors in his category just because they can. i think it's frustrating right now but i think, and sincerely hope that in the long run, it will be worth it.

I think I want to clarify my "he needs to get back to work" comment.

I don't mean that he should take a bad project just to be working, nor do I have any issues with him going on vacation etc. It's my expression for hoping he will film something soon because otherwise he won't have anything coming out in 2013.

I really liked his last film choices (the indies and TIWILY). It's just a bit frustrating to me that he hasn't been filming anything since he wrapped At Any Price last year or lined-up with specific filming plans because that put him into the situation again where he is under the pressure to find something "soon." Projects fall apart all the time, so of course it might take a bit until he finds a replacement for TIWILY (if that indeed isn't happening) but he would have more leeway taking his time had he filmed or lined up something else in the last 10 months. Shit happens, it's just annoying that it might happen "again" after he was in the same situation having such huge gaps twice in recent years already, so I was hoping he could avoid it so soon again.

Having said that, it's "only" July; he might very well film something this year and perhaps (hopefully?) he will surprise us and have an even better project. No one will be more happy than me if that happens. I want Zac to succeed and that's the reason why I care when he's not filming anything or takes shitty projects. I just hope his people will take better advantage of him opening TLO than they did after 17 Again.

I hope At Any Price does big things for him. He really can use a critically acclaimed project and I've been most excited for that project since last year. Perhaps it will open all the doors which were closed to him before.

Here's an idea: his production company should *produce* something. A production company that hasn't produced anything isn't a production company.
To be a writer you must write. To be an actor you must act. To be a producer you must produce.
If he needs material / a script, hell, I'd work with him on it. Dialogue is what separates me from the rest of the writers in my school.

Art for art's sake. Just throw me a couple dollar bills, yo.

Liberal Arts
Yeah I was wondering about This is Where I Leave You and Liberal Arts! I just bought tickets to the Liberal Arts screening at the Melbourne Film Festival, incredibly excited because of Zac and I also love Elizabeth Olsen!!
Hopefully they get into Venice though!! <3

I hope you will tell us in detail about the action of Zac, after the viewing.

Is there like a PO Box or mailing address for Zac's agent? I will get my brother to help write a persuasive letter on why he should get Zac better roles. I only say that because me and my brother have written persuasive letters to people (locally) about things, and they've usually worked.
annabelle83 on July 19th, 2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
I really don't think it's his agent's fault. I think every agent does their best to get their clients good work. I'd rather blame HSM and Disney. Premiere magazine said in their Cannes coverage, that "Zac comes from the lowest place in the industry - Disney Channel" and said he could benefit the most from getting his movie screened at Cannes among this year's young crowd(Shia, Rob, Kristen, etc.)

In a totally immature, fan-girl moment:

He should get a cameo on Teen Wolf playing the lead of a vampire family who has to work with the werewolves to take down the a kamina or to take out the hunters.

It would do nothing for his reputation or his career but it would be alot of fun. Plus, I wanna see Zac bite somebody. (-;

No vampires please. Like I don't think any really respects vampire movies or shows after Twilight in terms of quality acting. I could be wrong though.

On a side note...
Last night I was really pissed Zac Efron was cheating on me in my dreams, but this morning when I realized that meant that I was bonking Zac Efron, I was perfectly okay with it.

Bateman on movie careers
Comments by Jason Bateman relevant to some of this discussion:

"I've been offered a couple of leads in some movies that really suck. I mean, you know, if they're offering me the lead, the script ain't that great. The stuff that's good, I'm a little further down the cast list. I would rather do three or four small parts every year as opposed to some of the lower-hanging fruit that might get my name above the title. If you take that big paycheck for that, it's going to be real high-profile, you're going to be famous for a couple of weeks, and then your career is over and you've got to make sure you don't spend all your money before you die."

Re: Bateman on movie careers
If it has anything to do with "This Is Where I Leave You", then it probably can mean either a bad script, or distrust of the director. I do not know...
