Paperboy photocall in Cannes

source

Note: a post with screening feedback/reviews, the press conference video (if you don't want to wait, you can watch it at the festival site here in the meantime) and favorites will follow later. Just as a heads-up though, while some like the movie but the feedback is mostly quite negative.

I think the polarizing point is valid. I mean by just reading the book, you kind of knew that a certain type of audience would not care for it. It seems as though the more negative movie opinions are coming from the French critics, and the more positive from the American critics. I think the biggest thing is that the performance reviews are good which they seem to be across the board.

From what I've seen there is no country bias in the reviews. US critics dislike it just as much as other nationalities.

And the biggest problems in the movie are not the source material (and not the initial script imo either) but rather directing, stylistic and editorial choices made by Lee. Plus, without taking away a later discussion, it seems that Lee has inserted himself into the story in a major way (eg adding heavy racial aspects to the point where they overshadowed the actual core story) which the script not only didn't need but took away from the actual plot.

They should've let Zac narrate the film. :(
