Paperboy photocall in Cannes

source

Note: a post with screening feedback/reviews, the press conference video (if you don't want to wait, you can watch it at the festival site here in the meantime) and favorites will follow later. Just as a heads-up though, while some like the movie but the feedback is mostly quite negative.

How is it possible that Zac being the "novice" in the cast looks more professional in these pictures? Maybe it's just because Zac is wearing a suit and tie compared to Matthew, John, and Lee who are just dressed nice.

The Zac and Matthew picture is cute tho

Photocalls are semi-casual. They are all dressed fine for the occasion. I'm sure they will dress up tonight for the premiere.

It think a lot of the negative feed back is stemming from the fact that they're in France and the film seems to be really raw and gritty, which doesn't play to well in that country. However all of their performances seem to be getting great reviews, and the American reviews seem to be good too. Well see what the reviews look like after the main premiere tonight.

The suit that he is wearing looks Great.

I hear, that the movie had not liked in general, but the role of Zac, yes.

He is very handsome since he shaved the mustache.

First I'll say...nice pics.

In terms of the reviews, I can't say I'm really surprised. It seems to me that a lot of people don't know how to take Lee Daniels' films. He's just not a mainstream director in that his movies tap into issues that make people REALLY uncomfortable in a unique way. I will never for the life of me understand why so many people raved over Precious, for example, but to each their own I guess...
Nicole Millerkellycefron on May 24th, 2012 03:03 pm (UTC)
I can already tell The Paperboy will defiantly be one of those extremely polarizing films. It's all going to come down to if you like Lee's film making style or not.
KellyLondonlipton on May 24th, 2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
I despised Precious.
As did a lot of critics when it first appeared on the scene. But when the public got behind it and it started winning awards, they changed there tune.

This is what Lee Daniels does, you either love or hate his movies, there is no in-between.

Also Peter Dexter helped write the screen play for the movie,so he knew about any changes being made and obviously agreed to them.

So that makes "The Paperboy" his 4th artistic flop in a row?
I feel sorry for him. Its a shame he is wasting his talent and momentum on such terrible projects.

He really needs to change his gameplan and be a bit more ambitious.
Being half naked in every movie is not going to cut it in the long run.

Less David Hasselhoff, more Leonardo DiCaprio please!

"his 4th artistic flop in a row"

You'll have to define what you mean by "artistic" before we can understand your comment.

I personally think it's much to early to call the film "a flop" tbh. Like someone said, you either like Lee Daniels movies or you don't. I'm not at all surprised by the negativity.
kleth on May 24th, 2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
I would of course prefer universal praise. My real concern about the "negativity" is its potential effect on the distributors who are considering this movie in the hothouse environment of Cannes.

Give it time to simmer guys.

I'm just happy that his performance is getting good reviews, even if the movie overall is not.

First: He looks really good here. Love the suit! John looks so dressed down compared to the rest of them haha.

Second: I kinda figured it wouldn't go over great at Cannas. I know very little about the plot of the movie, I admit it, but from what I've heard its the type of movie you either love or hate. Same goes with Lee as a director. You either love him or hate him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like most people didn't like the way it was directed/how it placed out, is that right?

Something I noticed was a lot of people were calling it "kinky" and other stuff. So I guess it really is only for a certain audience.

But from what I've seen Zac and the rest of the cast are getting good reviews for their performance. Therefore I would not call this a "flop." Zac got to work with some amazing actors on this movie, actors he'd only dream about working with 5-6 years ago when he was still just a dancing/singing high school heartthrob. So yeah I don't exactly see it as a "flop" but maybe that's just me. I get the feeling he learned a lot when filming this movie.

I take it he'll be leaving Cannas soon then?

I wish Zac was in Magic Mike. Whether the critics like it or not, that's a guarenteed success. Besides, it would be completely appropriate for him to be shirtless in that film. No one could blame him for getting naked (why do people complain in the first place?!)
abigail80831abigail80831 on May 24th, 2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
Haha I think the only people who complain are critics because its kinda a stereotype with actors. If they are young, hot, and have a good body most of the time directors want them shirtless (atleast thats what I think it is).

I cannot wait to see this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well.

btw, Nicole looks great in that dress. Not many can work that color of red!
