LOL. Florida is a BIG PLACE. Where I'm from (South Florida) the natives don't have southern accents, but in Northern and Central Florida the natives do have southern accents. Guess where the Paperboy is set.

i have family up in pensecola and i've travelled a bit around destin etc and i've just never encountered a floridian accent that sounded like that!

Generally, the more south you are, and/or the larger the city you're in, means there are more non-natives: Floridians who moved from down from the North and brought their Northern accents with them, outnumbering Floridians who moved in from rural areas in the state and retain their Southern accent.

Moat County is a small town at a distance from Miami. A Southern accent fits.

(I'm from around Miami, and generally speak with a Northern accent, but I use "y'all," and some vowels go on for too long, surprising myself.)
