Interfilms Magazine May 2012

Thank you so much to ensango for sending me the Interfilms magazine interview article!

ETA: Text... I left off the Sparks part and a couple weird sentences, lol. And again thanks to ensango for providing the text.

He sings, dances, acts and does everything well; he is handsome, young, and a millionaire. He has it all and yet walks in the world thanking his lucky stars. A way that, as in most cases, is accompanied by hard work. He has been acting since age ten, and little by little, has gotten into our lives. We have seen him grow and some have even grown up with him. Only now will we see what the future holds for this Disney star flying solo in search of his own place in the firmament.

Unrecognizable. So appears a very young Zac Efron in his first foray into the world of acting. Yes, he did have a hand in of one of the greatest, though underappreciated, Joss Wheddon projects, 'Firefly'. It is amazing to recognize a very young Zac Efron giving life to the younger version of one of the protagonists of this series.

Because, until he became Troy Bolton, star of High School Musical, the young actor followed the path that every actor goes along. The secondary path, with and without a name, other projects preceding his great triumph: 'ER', 'The Guardian', 'CSI: Miami', 'Navy: Criminal Investigation'... with the large number of actors and actresses who have gone through these series, it is worth taking the time to find familiar faces.

But 2006 was the year that everything changed. The life of Zachary David Alexander Efron took a sharp turn, heading inexorably towards the successful rhythm of pop-rock.

As already mentioned, this versatile actor is well capable of doing almost anything he wants. Star in a musical where you play basketball, sing, dance, defend your place in the musical from competition and be absolutely charming at all times in order to woo the beautiful and shy girl who has stolen the heart to achieve an end happy? That all does not seem challenging enough for the actor. So he decided to do it twice more. The result of this display of skills (demonstrated by almost the entire cast) is the series High School Musical, one of the most profitable tv-movies…

But it was also the beginning of the emergence of Efron in all the gossip magazines and other related sites. He went from being promising in the world of acting to becoming the center of attention. For better and for worse, everything about this guy has since been watched closely. From orthodontics, his haircut, to personal hygiene. Nothing has been free from the scrutinizing gaze of the media, willing to assess even the smallest detail, positive and negative, of the actor.

…His co-star, Vanessa Hudgens, became the other half of a perfect match for a long time, supporting the actor at the time success began to take hold of both. Sadly for fans of the couple Zac-Vanessa (Zanessa or as some people call them, Brangelina are not alone), their young love ended. However, this breakup is not reflected in the careers of either.

After the third installment of HSM, the graduation from school and the beginning of a new life, doors opened for Efron to be part of new projects. The first, went back to school. With '17 Again', Hollywood has shown us how cruel can be the passage of time and how a young 20-year-old Efron may become a Matthew Perry bypassing his best. The charm of the young actor… was enough to give some excitement to a film whose theme is beginning to be cliche.

With 'Charlie St Cloud' actor range changed dramatically, showing that he is as capable of giving life to a bright teenager as to show how tormented a young man who has to face the absence of his younger brother can be.

Of course by participating in 'New Year's Eve', he got a step further to shed the label of teen idol of the masses. As part of one of an ensemble cast films, which have been lately more popular, and with the ever beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron showed once again that, as a charming young man, he has no rival.

Logan, a U.S. Marine sergeant, returns home from his mission in Iraq believing that the only thing that kept him alive was the photograph of a woman he never met. He found her name, Beth, where she lived, and decided to go to her home, and even accepts employment in the kennel of her family when he arrives. Despite her initial misgivings and the problems that fill the life of Beth, there is a romance between them, making Logan thinks she could be much more than his talisman of good luck.

There is no doubt that Logan is the biggest challenge that Efron has faced since he began his career. This time there is no dancing, no schools, or schoolgirls. It is the first fully adult character actor plays (obviously excluding '17 Again') and he does so with the maturity that he has acquired over time.

Playing a Marine, marked by war, and marked by the very survival when others fell, is not easy. The transformation the actor had to experience was not only the obvious physical change, but also it took hard research to internalize and then interpret the feelings, emotions, and suffering experienced by someone who has gone through that situation.

He had many conversations with Marines who were only just Zac's age… many hours of talking, watching and hearing stories that brought goose bumps were necessary for Efron to gradually discover who Logan really is. A soldier who, after the war is trying to recover part of the life he has lost, and his first step back to reality is to find the woman in the photograph that, unbeknownst to her, was his guardian angel.

Because Taylor Schilling is just missing wings to be an angel. For the actress this is her first major role but, judging by the praise and compliments all co-stars devote to her, not the last.

In 'When I Find You', Schilling portrays a single mother who, after losing her parents and brother in the war, withdraws into herself to overcome her pain. It is clear however that the arrival of Logan disrupts her world. We must not forget that this is a love story. Despite all the history, their personal tragedies and fears, what you find is just that, the story of two souls meeting. Hence, no wonder that the third name in this story is that of Nicholas Sparks.

If you know the name of Sparks, it may be because he is responsible for making us mourn bitterly with each novel he writes. Nicholas Sparks has managed to cross all borders and his stories are translated into over thirty languages, because who is to curb the language of love?

Stories so universal and so memorable that some of them have become part of the 'most beautiful love stories of all time'. The best example of this category (in Sparks related films) is 'The Notebook'.

Sparks now joins Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, or rather, joins Logan and Beth, two people locked up in themselves and need someone to save them, to heal wounds. Luckily, they find each other.
