'At Any Price' and international rights

From Cannes 2012: Zac Efron, Dennis Quaid Drama 'At Any Price' Makes Market Debut:
Exclusive Media has acquired all international rights to director Ramin Bahrani's Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid drama At Any Price and will launch the project to foreign buyers when the Marche du Film gets underway later this week.

At Any Price revolves around rebellious Dean Whipple (Efron), who is intent on becoming a professional race car driver at the expense of his obligations to his family's farming empire. His father (Quaid) is intent on his son taking over the business, and when a high-stakes investigation into their busines is exposed, the father and son are pushed into an unexpected situation that threatens their entire livelihood.

"The cast in the film is incredibly talented and the unviersal themes in the story are sure to resonate with our buyers," Exclusive president of international sales and distribution Alex Walton said. "Ramin Bahrani is an exceptional filmmaker delivering compelling and socially relevant films and we are delighted to be able to present his next project to buyers in Cannes."

ETA from Exclusive's site:

NOTE: This is probably at the very most a sales flyer for Cannes, not a real poster.
It may even just be a placeholder picture for the Exclusive site. The latter would be my preference cause that font is dreadful. I'm more creative with fonts in just my homework than that.

ETA2: Just to be clear, this isn't announcing like a premiere or anything... this is just a trade announcement saying who is selling international rights to buyers who are at Cannes.

I'm starting to develop a fond feeling for the Cannes Festival.

:)) I agree, this design is horrible. ))) I am a professional designer. :) But it's - I don't know what it is ... this is not the poster ... the child does better. :)

But any way, good news about the film, and new photos of Zac - that's good. Because I was very nervous, while we wait for news from Cannes.

"cause that font is dreadful"

I have an even bigger objection -- Zac is getting big face exposure while Dennis is small, distant, unidentifiable. In other words, they are, inadvertently or advertently, promoting this as a Zac Efron movie. Maybe that's even a good idea overseas, what do I know? But I just feel that Zac needs to be sold as part of a package: Yes! We've got Zac Efron! But that's not all...

Quaid isn't at pretty as Zac.

PS: If Zac makes a vampire movie can we call him Count Zacula?

"Quaid isn't at pretty as Zac."

I prefer the term "handsome," but that's still true.

"Quaid isn't at pretty as Zac."

Nor is Robert DiNero, but if he was co-starring, his face would be as prominent as Z. Dennis should be miffed by this poster.

Aren't these things settled in their contracts when they sign up for a film?

"Aren't these things settled in their contracts when they sign up for a film?"

A lot of things are, of course, things like equal billing. But what does that mean? There are no names on the poster, so maybe that's a loophole. Note what they did with the Liberal Arts poster -- no Zac on the first one, then a revised version with him in third place on a horizontal cast listing. There's obviously some flexibility here. And who knows, maybe Zac's agent got him first billing on the Bahrani project. Maybe Dennis just didn't care, or just needed the work, or just wanted to work with Bahrani. My point wasn't about equal billing but simply about marketing -- showcasing Zac with another actor of repute takes away the "Zac Efron project" impression.

Oh, I see what you're saying.

I hope the sales goes well. Even more though I hope the movie turned out to be good. :)

Interesting switch in focus in the media reporting. Back last year it sounded like Dennis' story but now they've put Zac's character as lead. I wonder if that's just for sales or if the movie focus had a slight shift as well (or, it was just reported wrongly last year).

It's all good though. I'm very much looking forward to it.

Pretty excited to see this movie.

ngl, that doesn't look like a real poster either. I like that picture of Zac though. That look should catch on for future projects.

I cite this image as evidence that he can play characters who are not the sweet cutie-pies he has portrayed so far.

I think At Any Price isn't going to Cannes. it is just going to be sold there
kleth on May 15th, 2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
It's not on the festival play list. But Cannes is the largest international market for movie sales to distributors, so this is where it happens. If Zac is there, it could help. ("Buy our movie for distribution in Argentina and I'll call your daughter on her birthday!")

I'm wondering, though, whether they are rushing sales on the basis of the director, cast, and a rough cut. Since they were doing re-shoots just last week, the final cut can't be ready. I guess I'm just surprised they didn't screen it at a festival somewhere before starting to flog it to distributors. Or maybe it's easier to sell a movie *before* anyone has seen it, ha ha.

Actors have normally little to do with sales of international territories. I'm not saying he might not pop by at a party of the seller (if they have one) or say hello since he's already there but I doubt it will beyond that. Not even Christine Vachon (who is one of the main producers) is in Cannes.

And selling of international territories happens all the times without even having started filming. Idk if they will screen footage to prospective buyers (it's possible but if I had to guess more likely with a sizzle reel or some scenes and not a cut of the full movie) or sell it unseen but it means nothing in terms of movie quality.

"Actors have normally little to do with sales of international territories"

I was being mostly facetious. The Zeffer is always calling the children of colleagues, especially on birthdays, as a favor.

"Idk if they will screen footage to prospective buyers"

I now realize the source of my thought, that it might be easier to sell the movie before it is screened. On Entourage, I think it was E who put together a little trailer of the Escobar movie, and it was so exciting that it generated extravagant bids based solely on that "sizzle reel". But they got greedy and held out until the movie was screened at some festival, when everyone got to see how bad it really was.

If this poster is meant as a sales promo at Cannes, the title also is a double entendre. Hope it doesn't encourage low bids.

nah, it's basically a private picture, esp since it wasn't like a normal fans waiting on set type of thing... so i won't post it unless i feel it is special enough to make an exception to the rule.

and i'm sure it was easier to stay with a family for several reasons but maybe most of all it kept people from bugging them like they were at the motels there.
