Zac in Garage Magazine Philippines

I didn't post all the images from the source (Zac Efron Philippines FB), only the ones we haven't really seen yet so head over there for those if you like. I hope we get some HQs of this stuff soon!

Have we ever seen him in a short-sleeved shirt? T-shirts and polos, sure, but an actual shirt with short sleeves?

"I never thought I would play a Marine. It was the farthest from the character I could ever imagine playing."

So I'm walking the dog this morning when I have this Road To Damascus experience. Zac's problem in choosing roles is a lack of imagination. TLO was the right project, but Zac played the wrong character! His justification for this project was his desire to play a character completely different from himself. But Logan is not very different from Zefron, except for being a veteran and being less loquacious. Zac should have played Keith, the jerk and bully; now that's completely different! And Jay Ferguson could have played Logan, being closer to what the novel readers expected.

Of course, none of this could happen, there's a lack of imagination all around. As I posited earlier, I don't think Zac can get cast in any leading role that doesn't have a romantic component. And poor Jay Ferguson; as one reviewer noted, he's just "born to play a bully" so no romantic leading roles for him.

That's an interesting point. But I guess Zac and Jay will both have to work around those factors.

My thinking has evolved since this morning. I used the term "imagination" because that was what Zac used. But another way to define the problem is to call it an excess of caution. Early on, when asked about his plans, he emphasized that he wanted to do roles that were "genuine." He couldn't see himself handling a gun, he didn't want to startle his fanbase with naked sexy roles.

Always assuming that there were actual choices available, he has expanded his acting in cautious steps. Playing a 37-year-old teenager in 17 Again was probably his boldest move. But after that, in M&OW he played a high school student getting involved in theater, hardly a far-out choice. In CStC he began as a high school student, then moved to "five years later"; there was a make-out scene but Charlie was no stretch. In TLO, the PTSD element was minimized, so he didn't have to do anything really dramatic (but he did pop his gun cherry). He pretty much regressed and played himself in NYE.

His mystical hippie in Liberal Arts is his first really bold character choice, and that's safe because it's just a cameo (playing the same character as the lead in a whole movie would have been truly daring). In The Paperboy and At Any Price we don't know yet how he plays his characters; I suspect we'll get more emotion in these roles, but they are still only incremental steps. We aren't talking DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape or Depp in Edward Scissorhands here.

Zac may want to play great roles in great movies, but he's not forcing the pace to get there (or those nervous directors aren't offering him roles that are more than one step beyond what's he's done before).

Nice alaysis. But I have to say it's not a good idea to take completely different roles to expand career. He may not be prepared to play these roles well. He may only reveal his shortcomings as an actor or alienate his fans. He should expand his role choices, but not too much like a villain IMO.

I was reading an article by Korean media on last weekend's US box office results, and they said about TLO that "Zac Efron is slowly, but successfully establishing his brand." I guess maybe they are right. Tom Cruise has been playing certain type of character a lot which defined his image. So have a lot of big actors.

I'm pretty sure Zac Efron is the first name people think of when they hear "young hot guy". So that can be an advantage when producers consider whom to cast in that kind of "hot male" roles. The problem is that it's hard to find a good role for an actor under thirty. To sum it up, I think Zac may have to wait several years to blosson as an actor. I pray he's still around till he reaches that age. I guess he needed good box office to keep his position in the industry and that may explain why he chose "safe" roles like TLO and NYE.

Actually, I don't disagree with you. This career development plan, to say "no" to projects that merely repeat what you have already done and to choose projects that carry things forward one step at a time so as not to leave your fans behind, is a good one. But it contrasts with his expressed desire to seek challenges and risk failure. For all his innate nature as a thrill seeker, its seems that professionally, Zac's guiding principles are prudence, patience, and persistence. He gives the impression that he's the hare in this race, but in fact he's the turtle.

There are an awful lot of "what is your style" type questions. I think it would get a bit tiresome repeating yourself after awhile.

I'd love to see a curve ball sometime, like:
"Would you rather have to sit in every chair you see or pee your pants every time someone says your name?"
"Three gods A , B , and C are called, in some order, True, False, and Random. True always speaks truly, False always speaks falsely, but whether Random speaks truly or falsely is a completely random matter. Your task is to determine the identities of A , B , and C by asking three yes-no questions; each question must be put to exactly one god. The gods understand English, but will answer in their own language, in which the words for yes and no are “da” and “ja”, in some order. You do not know which word means which."
"What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a head but never weeps, has a bed but never sleeps?"
