Nice interview.

The 9/11 mentions and his career goals for himself were very insightful.
Bee: Zac – Details - looking away - redjeezbee on May 3rd, 2012 03:18 pm (UTC)
I like the interview and the intro is interesting - because someone finally spells stuff out.

I'm wondering why Zac never mentions Ramin Bahrani in his interviews along with Lee Daniels. Ramin might not be as well known to the general public but he VERY respected by the industry.

I'm holding Zac to his comments about being selective and trying to make great movies... that's worth it if you go after good projects. And thankfully his last 3 projects do support this. I can't say the same about the trifeca before as the article is hinting at as well.
kleth on May 3rd, 2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
"the intro is interesting"

I suppose it's hard to find parts for attractive young male actors in which they *don't* play a romantic lead of some sort. But I thought that's why he has a production company, to create his own opportunities.

"I'm wondering why Zac never mentions Ramin Bahrani"

Now that's an interesting question. In the avalanche of recent interviews, I can't recall a single mention of the Bahrani Project. Maybe that was a project he just wants to forget. Then again, with the movie in post-production without a distributor or anything, maybe Bahrani just doesn't want it talked about.

hahah I LOVE witty Zac. <3

I was impressed by how quick and smart this response was. He knows he is going to get certain questions that he really doesn't want to answer. I wish he was equally well prepared for each of them.

There are times when I think the sexiest thing about Zac is his brain. I dunno - I can't decide between his brain and his body, lol.

It is almost 2:30am and I think I'm not thinking straigh but this interview bothered me a lot.

Not the interview itself but when we think about what he talks and then look at what he is actually doing. Like, yeah, I can understand him wanting to work with good directors/actors and etc but how does a picky person go and does CstC, NYE and TLO in a row? Like... what? And he can't even say that he wanted to do CstC because of Burr since I'm pretty sure Zac was the one who asked Burr to do it. And yeah, I know MP is great and all but dude, she already had a hell of a career. You have to think about your own and not that it would be an honour to work with her in a shitty movie. You can work with great actors in good movies too.

Don't get in a bad project just because it has a director who made a good movie a decade ago or because you will be in scenes with an amazing actress.

And then in another interview they asked him to give an advice for people who are trying to be actors and he was all "don't move to LA"... Zac, that is great and it shows me that you are still aware that some people in LA have a wild lifestyle but then we see you on Paris Hilton birthday party and... :| I mean, no ~shade~ do Paris Hilton. Maybe she is a great person and all. And I won't judge anyone for partying but buddy, the people you are choosing to hang out with make me wonder if you're just another "do what I say, not what I do" person. I know his personal life shouldn't bother me. I know, as a fan, I should only really care about his career but damn, I really care about him. A lot. It is weird but I do and I can't help myself. Hell, maybe Ryan and that group are better friends than Hermione Granger and I'm just misjudging but... :|

whatever. Idk why I have so many Zac feelings tonight... maybe it was because I watched 17 Again.
kleth on May 4th, 2012 05:58 am (UTC)
"how does a picky person go and does CstC, NYE and TLO in a row"

You have to be selective among the parts you can get, not all parts everywhere. Looking at those three movies from his point of view, I can justify each one. When he signed for SCtC, his other choices were all teen romances or musicals, this was his one shot at doing something different and extending himself. As a romantic drama, TLO may have been something of a mistake, but he has explained why he wanted to do it: his first fully mature character and someone not at all like himself. I rate NYE as just-for-fun (a whole 10 minutes of screen time) and a much-needed comedy after so many dramas.

The above three pics might seem like selective choices if we knew what the alternatives were (if any).

Yes good directors don't mean god movies. But they do mean MORE movies for Zac on his showreel which will be sent to casting directors to show them what Zac can do.

Ok hang on.

Aside from the fact that I disagree with you on these five classifications, I ask people to remain respectful of other fans and I do ask they remain respectful of him because this is a fansite.

We all have different reasons for liking Zac and different ways of thinking about Zac and different ways of expressing our thoughts. We can discuss and debate and disagree about things all we want and in fact I even strongly encourage it, I love all the discussions we have here.

But in the end, I don't like or want people judging other fans like dividing them into these five groups does. I can't stop people from thinking judgmentally of other people, their prerogative, but if people want to comment here, on my livejournal, they have to be respectful of other's opinions even if they disagree with them.

For some of you, I think you'd been happier if he'd answered like this:

Interviewer: You spent your teenage years in front of the camera. Was that both challenging and rewarding for you?

Zac: It got me laid at a very early age, so yeah, it was great. The jocks flushed my head in the toilet; that was not so great.

Interviewer: How did you keep up with school and work simultaneously?

It was easy; my dad gave me the answers and mom wrote my papers. I graduated and was looking at college.

Interviewer: Do you have a desire to go?

Zac: Yeah! The parties are wild and the chicks are easy when the beer is flowin'.

Interviewer: How difficult is it to cross the bridge to manhood without being typecast?

Zac: Why cross a bridge when you can bungee jump off it?

Interviewer: Yeah, but is it hard not being typecast?

Zac: Are you stupid? I'm a Disney actor, dude. Do you know what it's like trying to make directors take me seriously, especially when I'm cute? Nobody is even willing to consider the possibility that I MIGHT be a good actor. My name alone makes directors laugh. Thing is, it wasn't always this way. I was really good at theater in high school. My teacher thought I had talent and believed in me, and it wasn't because I could sing and dance while playing basketball either. She saw something in me that was valuable, but the hand that makes me now breaks me: the iron fist of the Giant Mouse.
I'm watching my career slip away with every movie I make; you think I don't know it?

Interviewer: Did anyone specific help you transition in your career?

Zac: There are things that go on behind the scenes; nobody talks about it. It's rampant in Hollywood.

Interviewer: You must receive many offers for film.

Zac: Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah!

Interviewer: Do you have a criterion for choosing one part verus another?

Zac: Yeah, the guy with the most money wins.

Interviewer: Are you picky?

Zac: Absolutely not. Listen man, nobody's givin me parts. I'm desperate here; I'll do anything. Hell, gay porn is looking good these days. Think Ron Jeremy is ready to retire? Maybe I can take his place.

beginning to feel so damn disapointed with some of Zac's supposed fans. Some of you are being so damn negative all the time!! I've already left one site because people keep bashing him all the time! OK! he's not yet doing Oscar worthy stuff. But the purpose of movies is to entertain!! To take us away from our boring lives (Well for me! Yours may not be boring or difficult :) ) If it sweeps you away to a better place for a couple of hours, then that is great. As for professional critics, if they don't like a genre or actor they are never gonna be able to give an unbiased review. Kinda like asking me to go and review a Justin Bieber concert. I really enjoyed The Lucky One. So it is a fluffy romance, but it killed an afternoon in a most pleasant way!! But then I am biased.... I am a Zac Efron fan!

Exactly! If I had peers/fans like these, I'd have eaten a bullet in my .22 by now.
There's too much slippery slope in these arguments. TLO will not make or break the deal; it isn't going to seal Zac's fate forever. It's a movie that made money and showed Zac can open an adult film. Let's not magnify it into a tragic disaster that represents the crucial point in Zac's career when he began a downward descent into porn, drugs, illicit sex and finally, death.
Instead, I say TLO is a done deal. What's the next step? Make it count. Always look to the future because the past is gone forever.

I'm pretty late to the party on this post, but my two cents:

I think there tends to be some tendency within the fandom to overanalyze his movie choices, but I can see why people would be disappointed. With the exception of Charlie, M&OW and maybe TLO, he hasn't really done a film that will help people see him as something more than just a pretty face, That's why I'm so excited for The Paperboy and Bahrani because I think those may finally be the roles that help him shed the "heartthrob" image a bit. And for me personally, I haven't really loved one of his movies since 17 Again. I'm anxious to see how he'll handle the more serious material in his upcoming films.

As I've said before, I could honestly care less what the critics say about his performances because that's not what matters to me. If a movie looks good I'm going to see it. I do wish he'd take riskier roles, but maybe he doesn't feel worthy of them yet. He's kind of alluded to such feelings in the past but sooner or later he's gonna have to bite the bullet.

I do wonder why he and his team choose the scripts they do, though. I'm sure he gets more than his fair share and I know he's said he wants to do things that are different, but I wonder what their criteria are. I read one interview recently where he said he and his manager (or someone from his team) mapped out a plan for his career years ago. That's all well and good but again, it doesn't seem like they've deviated a great deal from the "heartthrob" roles. And as much as I hate hearing the argument "he needs to appeal to a male demographic" over and over, it's true. Not saying that failing to appeal to a male demographic will make or break his career, but he sure hasn't helped himself in that regard.

As for this: "but then we see you on Paris Hilton birthday party and... :| I mean, no ~shade~ do Paris Hilton." I laughed. I do find it a bit ironic that "Mr Humble" seems to run around in the same social circles as some really really wealthy people in Hollywood (Paris, Rumer, etc.). And before anyone says anything, I'm not judging. For all I know they could be really nice people and its personal life, not mine. Just an observation.

What's with the bringing up of his personal life? No one, including me, knows who he really hangs out with. Zac doesn't want people talking about his personal life, and I'm going to listen to that.

"And tbf, if he thinks this script [TLO] was objectively good, then he's doomed because he will never be able to pick a good script...."

Now you are really scaring me. What if Zac Efron can't distinguish between good and bad scripts? He did say that he thought Nicholas Sparks was a great writer. I assumed that was just the usual accolades for co-workers - the director was great, the other actors were fabulous, etc. But what if he really meant it?
Sapphirasapphia on May 5th, 2012 10:12 am (UTC)
Wow! This article brought a lot of discussion!
I wonder what will happen in the fandom, if The Paperboy fail too? I mean, everyone is talking about a brilliant play Nicole Kidman in this film. And that the film has great stuff ... But no one can say that this film - Zac Efron's finest hour. They say that this is what he did not make before .... and all ...

And I do not know what an unusual and intriguing in the "At Any Prica"? At first sight an ordinary film ...

But I put too much hope on them ... I'd like to Zac gave us a lot of good stuff and not get into silly stories ... But I agree with the opinion that he was difficult to obtain the desired role than Robert and Shia labeouf.

I wonder what will happen in the fandom, if The Paperboy fail too?

I can only speak for myself and while I would be sad that it didn't work out, I will not be angry or disappointed for Zac making this movie.

This is the type of movie which imo has promise (it had great source material, a good script, good producers, good director and co-stars) and is the type of role which might be risky but will eventually help Zac get better and get respect. It has all the ingredients to be a great movie. If the movie doesn't work out, too bad but it had a chance. My criticism with TLO and NYE is based on the fact that the scripts were pretty bad and all the surrounding factors weren't indicating that those movies ever had a chance of being good either.

The intriguing part of At Any Price is Ramin Bahrani. Roger Ebert called him director of the decade in 2008 and every single of his movies won plenty of awards. The guy hasn't made a bad movie in his life so far. This is a case of 'follow good directors' which I totally agree with. And while the premise of the movie might sound ordinary or boring, it's the execution which makes movies like this interesting. Although I expect that this movie is not something the majority of Zac's fanbase will be into.

All the photos with this interview are from TLO. They remind me that I really didn't care for Moon-Faced Zac (which carried over into NYE). He looks so much better back at his original weight.
