News Round-up: TLO, script in development, E3 and IKEA
This summer is probably going to be really busy for me, so posts may often be me playing catchup, especially when it is kind of minor stuff.

The Lucky One - recent screening, MPAA rating and questions of release date

Zac was apparently there and just going to paraphrase what I've seen in terms of changes.

Mostly the film seems the same - the sex scenes seem to have few (if any) changes. They did change the opening of the film adding an introductory scene with narration. Sadly this may mean we're stuck with the weak death scene. Oh well.
(Sources: 1, 2)

I'm curious if they will make any changes after this point. They submitted the film for an MPAA rating prior to this screening and they were awarded a PG-13 (reported June 1). The MPAA system is rather a mystery so it is unclear how much (if anything) they can change without having to resubmit the film for evaluation. However I doubt any changes they could make now will bump it up to R.

I have to say, I'm rather disappointed with Warner Bros. I feel like they are really dropping the ball on this, especially the release date. Since the studio has been sitting on this decision, most of the fall, winter and spring are full up with competition. And unless they replace one of their previously-scheduled films, I don't know where it will go without its success being somewhat compromised.

Just as a point of comparison, the next Nicholas Sparks movie (set up at Relativity) is Safe Haven. They just announced a director and haven't shot a frame or even announced a cast yet but they've already got their release date set for June 1, 2012. Already!

jeezbee and I have been contemplating a potential release date. I know everyone seems to be saying early 2012 but we looked at everything.

September 2nd or 9th might've been an okay weekend actually but now it would be an awfully rushed promotion. October is pretty full, though there is a small but not ideal (for several reasons, one being another WB film is scheduled already) opportunity as counter-programming on October 21st. However, getting a magazine cover then may be tricky with movies by Johnny Depp, Matt Damon and Justin Timberlake also opening in the last two weeks of October. Both of those months are also compromised though by potential conflicts with his filming schedule. November is out of the question with Twilight and December is unlikely especially with New Year's Eve opening at the beginning of the month.

For January, among other competition (including a Katherine Heigl comedy on the 27th), WB already has two releases (one also a drama) scheduled so it might be pushing it to add it to either open weekend, January 6th or 20th. The drama, Joyful Noise, is smack dab between those two weekends and the possible negative effects on each other's audience is, I'm guessing, not something WB wants to risk.

In theory, WB could move Joyful Noise but even after moving that, there is still the romantic drama/comedy/something Everybody Loves Whales with John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore on that same weekend. So.... that's no good.

February is out since Screen Gems staked out Valentine's Day weekend for their romantic drama, The Vow, with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum a whole sixteen months before the release date. And a week later, This Means War, an action rom-com with Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, opens.

March is somewhat of a mess, full of big movies. The most significant threats to TLO are a romantic comedy on March 9th, Relativity's Snow White project on March 16th, and The Hunger Games on March 23rd. Then you have the re-release of Titanic in 3D on April 6th. The rest of April is pretty open though it is hard to estimate what business Titanic will do. So maybe the best open release date still left is April 27th. Or, at the latest, the next weekend as counter-programming to The Avengers. If they go too much later in May or (god forbid) even into June, the two Sparks films will be stepping on each other's feet.

I don't want to be Debbie Downer but it concerns me that short of waiting almost a whole year more to release it, they are handicapping its success from the start. Disturbingly reminiscent of CStC.

On top of twiddling their thumbs over a release date, WB has also done little to actually grow interest in the interim. They don't need a date to release a few stills. I mean it's getting kind of stale posting one of the same five or so usable (some barely) pictures we have.

Not a lot to do about it of course, so I will just hope for the best I guess.

Hopefully now that they have a few screenings down and something close to a final product, we'll get more info soon.

Potential New Project: The Ever After Part

This showed up yesterday in an interview with screenwriters Jonny Umansky and Zach Hyatt by jewcy.com:

Are there specific reasons why you are working in TV instead of movies, what’s your favorite TV (writing wise) right now?

Jonny: We actually work in both.  Right now, we’re writing a romantic comedy for Zac Efron that’s kind of nontraditional rom-com called “The Ever After Part.”

From Jonny's twitter, presumably about this project:

This is clearly a looong way from being realized but I'm intrigued by 'absurdly dark action romcom'. Just please don't let it be ridiculous like Killers or Knight and Day.

In general, I am now choosing to not retwitter or post private things in Zac's day-to-day life. It has just become too invasive and too inane (like seriously do we really need to retwitter something about Zac waiting for a urinal? Seriously?). However, I always reserve the option to post anything slightly unusual or more interesting than "Oh Zac is eating next to me," blah blah blah. And these two are interesting...

Zac at E3 Gaming Conference

That's Zac, always our fav and sexiest nerd :)

This one is slightly more private-ish but I love IKEA so I will happily post when he supposedly is spotted there, lol. I hope he ate some meatballs and lingonberry sauce on my behalf.

I will imagine this is what he ate:

Like Cady, I'm really disappointed that the WB put TLO into this awful position of not getting a decent release date by waiting around for so long and doing nothing. They could have easily set a date a long time ago and moved if the film itself didn't support the date. As if I didn't dislike that project enough already.

As for the new project - thankfully ehs_wildcats already talked me off the ledge yesterday. If it's (hopefully) a project fairly down the track after he's done several other (studio) releases in more male-friendly genres, fine. But I really don't want to see this happening for a while. Having said that, I sure hope the script will be better than basically all mainstream rom-coms nowadays, which are consistently bad. Non-traditional, dark and action-y sounds good in that respect, I hope they really mean it.

Were there really ones about him waiting for a urinal!?

That script idea intrigues me.

Re: TLO; idk man. It feels really just like a stepping stone and I think (hope) they'll build it around transitioning Zac into an adult actor with his core audience, ie females, so they can be pulled into his more action/dark movies he's got coming up. I hope it does well, I really do, but I don't have super high hopes and I won't waste my time fretting.

Hypothetically, if you saw Zac waiting for a urinal (yk, it'd be an Ally McBeal unisex bathroom) I'd expect you to tell me about it.

No, but seriously I did read most and I agree that Warner isn't really jumping on the ball with this film. I'm surprised no additonal stills, official poster, nor has a teaser of sorts been released- or is it too early for teasers? I don't think so, because even "The Vow" has a full trailer out. What gives, WB?

In general, I am now choosing to not retwitter or post private things in Zac's day-to-day life.
Sweet, fair enough!

Idk, I'm just going to trust that WB knows what it's doing..cant change it, might as well role with it. Although I am wondering why it would be submitted for a rating if it isnt going to be released for months?

I read your whole analysis and all I could think was 'Katherine Heigl is still popular?:S
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on June 12th, 2011 11:26 pm (UTC)
lol at heigl. i kind of agree tbh.

re: the rating. i kind of wondered that myself because most movies get ratings much closer to release dates. super 8, for instance, was rated the same date as the lucky one, just about a week before its release.

i went through some of the old mpaa bulletins and found it isn't unheard of for films to be rated quite awhile before being released. here are some examples (first date = rated, second = released):

the last song 10/28/09 - 3/31/10 (orig scheduled for 1/8/10)

prince of persia 10/28/09 - 5/28/10

secretariat 3/31/10 - 10/8/10

your highness 3/31/10 - 4/8/11 (orig scheduled for 10/1/10)

the descendents 2/23/11 - 12/16/11

real steel 2/23/11 - 10/7/11

miley's movie LOL 3/16/11 - no release date yet

tree of life 7/6/10 - 7/8/11 (limited release may; rerated as still pg13 after editing 11/24/2010)

so in the end them rating it now isn't telling us much, other than maybe they can't or don't care enough to do reshoots on the weak parts.
annabelle83 on June 12th, 2011 11:35 pm (UTC)
If I remember right, didn't Charlie St. Cloud get PG 13 rating before doing reshoots? If not, it was just a couple of days after reshoots were done. I remember thinking if they should submit the movie again for a new rating.

lol maybe TLO will only be released after The Paperboy & Ramin's project and no one will gaf about it and be "oh, that movie Efron did before he proved us he was a serious actor... I'll forgive him for this one"

/dreaming

Anyway, WB is doing a very lousy job. It almost feels like WB doesn't want to promote this movie at all, what is a disappointment because WB usually is really good at this... I know they are focusing everything on Green Lantern & HP but please remember about your other movies, k?

I just want The Lucky One to come out. But I basically agree with everything you said about The Lucky One and WB.

And I'm excited for another new project. If this keeps up, Zac will be busy with projects for atleast 10 years, then presumably, more after that. I actually like seeing Zac is comedies because he has such great comedic timing and is hilarious, so I'm excited for that.

Last thing, Zac going to E3 is just another reason I like him.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on June 12th, 2011 11:01 pm (UTC)
i would love for zac to do more comedies. he is so fantastic in them. hopefully he films one soon.
flawlessaflawlessa on June 12th, 2011 10:04 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't mind if he did at least one very traditional rom-com, I think he can have a charming presence on screen and it would work well. I didn't realise the state of the promo for TLO was that bad, they should at least update on it. Is there like a twitter where fans can show the company there is a def interest for information on it? I've noticed Miley fans tweet the WeinsteinFilms twitter often to show their interest for So Undercover stuff and then some stills came out.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on June 12th, 2011 11:12 pm (UTC)
twittering at them might help. though they may just not care yet or are waiting to have a release date to decide when the first stills should be released, idk.

and yeah i'd like him in romcoms for the same reason, he is so charming on screen. but i do think he has to be cautious with romantic comedy or drama because do too much of it and you get a bit pigeon-holed like rachel mcadams or hugh grant.
annabelle83 on June 12th, 2011 11:18 pm (UTC)
I'd love him to do a romantic comedy with Emma Stone! If it's "non-traditional", Ellen Page will be good too.

As for speculating TLO release date, I'm till hopeful for a winter release. Most of movies opening in Nov/Dec don't have any official stills or teasers either. I'm thinking of Dec 23(alrdady crowded but...) or Dec 28(only one movie is scheduled on that weekend so far).
annabelle83 on June 12th, 2011 11:20 pm (UTC)
*already crowded

God, I feel stupid not knowing how to edit.
The Writers Denmusewriter on June 13th, 2011 12:25 am (UTC)
If it could release on my birthday (Dec. 23rd), I think I would love WB forever. From what I hear from people who've seen it, that'd be the best present ever;)
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on June 13th, 2011 12:38 am (UTC)
i think unfortunately december as a whole is just overwhelmingly crowded with movies that will stick around awhile taking up screens which would mean TLO would have to open on fewer screens meaning less box-office.

the 28th isn't 100% impossible... there are probably more disastrous weekends they could choose (like the weekend before 'the vow'), but it still is not ideal i think.
It's Audrey not Aubrey: Let's Don't Be Sillyaudrey_za on June 13th, 2011 09:29 pm (UTC)
If TLO seriously opens the week before or around The Vow I will.. IDEK, but I will NOT be amused!
