ok i fully agree cstc sucked overall but zac was good... i'm not just imagining that

That Owen Gleiberman...

Though I am really sad about Charlie St. Cloud in the end... and not just cause most people unfairly equate bad quality with bad actor.

It's more because I think the concept had a lot of potential :/ maybe if Stephen King had written it.

I comfort myself though, knowing that The Tourist has an equally bad rating on metacritic and worse on Rotten Tomatoes. And for all the bitching people did about how small the opening for CStC was... The Tourist had not one teen A-lister but two mainstream A-listers and only did $4 million more (though I'm sure it will do better long-term).

The dialogue in Welcome to the Rileys was so painful.

Also I think I can kind of get into what Owen is saying.

He wasn't actually good in the movie. It didn't play to any of his strengths at all, for 70%+ of it (and even when he was generically charming, there was a whole lot of ennui because it didn't mean much in the movie). When that happens, it looks like floundering. But the overwhelming feeling I got through the course of the movie was that I just wished he was in another movie where he could perform to par with potential. Sometimes I feel like that's what people mean when they say things like that. Because he didn't really transcend the material; it was just very obviously bringing him down.

i kind of get that, because there were definitely moments where i was like... damn it, so close to amazing but there is something keeping it from working. the ambulance scene is that way. but i don't feel like that means he wasn't good because it was the other stuff, the editing and dialogue, not him.

i compare this to me and orson welles where the character was kind of underdeveloped and some of the dialogue bad (though not as bad as cstc overall ofc), but z could've made better and more dynamic choices to help flesh it out where the script was lacking.

i have mixed feelings about the strengths thing cause there is so much territory for him acting-wise that he has yet to even come close to engaging with. i know he has to get out of his zone if he wants to grow and i think he'll never know his boundaries till he does. though i don't think he reached the limit here. maybe with logan... i guess we'll see.

but i think there is no shame in embracing your strengths either. it's why almost all actors have a shtick. i think, as in all things, balance is best. just please dear god let his shtick not be romantic sappiness.

Can you believe I have yet to see??

All because I want to honor him with seeing it at the theaters...

Very few sites says Dec 24th. I'll wait until then, it's closer than ever.
But if it isn't true I waited for nothing lol

I was waiting too, but decided to give up after they changed the date from september 24 to december 24.
and I'm almost sure they moved it AGAIN to january 14 =/
If the movie ends up going straight to dvd I won't be surprised...

i COMPLETELY agree about the concept. when i read the book, i was so excited about what it could've been. the way they approached it was all wrong.

the problem really struck me when i watched the special feature about the in-between. for me even just thinking about those ideas is so moving... maybe because i've lost people or because i'm compelled personality-wise to wonder. so how disappointing then that the special feature was more engaging than the movie on that level :(

I guess I'm just such a fan that I can't (or won't) see Zac in a bad light. I did have high hopes for CSC in film version because I honestly loved the book. And I agree that the film took some of the best parts of the book and screwed them all up or simply did not put them in. But I also have to say that compared to a lot of films I've seen, CSC was certainly not the worst. It isn't even in the bottom half. Look at Easy A. How did Easy A make $20 million more than CSC? It was a really stupid movie. Anyway, I just wish Zac the best and hope for wisdom in his future choices. He really is so talented. He needs to have a worthy project.

Huh? CSC one of this year's 5 worst movies? While I agree it was bad, there were plenty of worse movies this year, like The Last Airbender or Vampires Suck.

Even if Gleiberman hated CSC that much, he could've blamed it on its script and editing, not Zac's acting. The general consensus was that Zac was good despite the material, and I completely agree.

Now I see Gleiberman also picked Robin Hood and The Book of Eli for worst movies. Weird list...
