k... we've known this has been in the works for awhile, but...
from SlashFilm (via tracking board):

Another rumor which is making the tracking board rounds today is that Zac Efron has apparently been offered the lead role in Albert Hughes’ upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular anime/Katsuhiro Otomo‘s six-volume manga Akira. I’m not able to confirm the offer, but one source tells me Efron is in talks, while another says that it is “far from a done deal.”

many fanboys are pissed about zac (which is really irrational imo of course).

here's hoping it all works out to zac's satisfaction and the movie when/if it does happen, is excellent.

I'm still sort of conflicted about it. It's a big risk.

On the one hand, I'm like 'Hell yeah' because it's not a sappy romance but finally something more male skewing and I know he loves the material and would love to do it. Plus, he totally can pull off Kaneda.

But my other side has a lot of concerns with the project itself (not the type but this specific setup). Manga/anime adaptions have just not been successful yet but more than that I'm really weary of the latest screenwriter (Albert Torres), the main producers (Andrew Lazar) and Albert Hughes isn't my first choice either. Plus, the adaption itself has a lot of challenges. I just want it to be successful.

In the end, if he does it, I hope he's smart enough to insist on script approval (esp considering the writer) and given the fuck-up from WB on The Lucky One co-star approval would be good too but I think that's hard to get. But he really shouldn't join this without any control about the script.
