i haven't seen it yet because i'm broke, but i'm disappointed that most of the reviews aren't so favorable.

Ugh right when I have to leave. :(

Did anyone else really dislike the scene at the end where Sam is talking to Charlie and Charlie can't see him and then there's all these dramatic lines and slow-mo Zac walking. *shakes head*

But GUH the scene where Tess is at her dad's grave and is scared and figures out she's dying KILLED ME.

umm
but in the end,, she's alive,,,

so during the dinner she was alive,,,,, and when she left for her sail thing she was "dead"

so did zac have sex with tess's spirit or ghost?

Re: umm
Tess was never flat lining/genuinely dead.

The last time Charlie saw her "alive" was when he was watching her boat sail away from the lighthouse tower. We see this moment again in a flashback scene once the Coast Guard announce in the coffee shop that Tess is officially missing.

I think it's one of those 'leave it up to the audience' kind of things on if you believe she was more in one realm (reality) versus another (in-between). If anything, I'd say what the two felt held more importance over emphasizing the actual act, hence why Tess is remembering things in dreams once she is rescued and recovering.

My theater was a mess (in a good way!) The ENTIRE audience started shouting things like 'What the hell?!' 'WHAT?!' 'Aw, c'mon!' and these guys in the same row as me were like 'LOL, DENIED!' when Tess gets up after Charlie gives her his drawing of her boat and they have that almost-kiss.

- I loved that I could hear people gasp when Tess couldn't see her reflection. (Was it not obvious?)
- I liked the "Forgive me, Sam" line when Charlie says goodbye on the boat. There was an entirely different (read: LONG) dialogue at the screening that just went on and on and on. I liked the simplicity of him seeking forgiveness A LOT better.
- My bf got up to leave, so we didn't get to watch the end credits -_- (LOL, I was like 'But they're kissing. THEY'RE KISSSSSSSSSSSSING!' and my bf was all like 'Yup, still walking. Don't care.')
- The opening scene/race up to the car crash are probably my favorite, as far as pace and overall feel, moments of the film. I wish the movie could have kept that level of engagement throughout. Kudos to Zac on throwing in the back flip.
- The James Dean comment wasn't in the theatrical version (wasn't in the June screener either)- wonder why they made that such a prominent line in trailers when it didn't make it to the final cut?
- When Sam was talking about wrecking it/whatever inappropriate line he gave re: Tess everyone was like 'Wait, WHAT did he just say?!' LOL
- "Sexy pose."

Was this more along the lines of the monologue in the book?

When Sam was talking about wrecking it/whatever inappropriate line he gave re: Tess everyone was like 'Wait, WHAT did he just say?!' LOL

I was like hey now 12 year old kid lol - I totally did a double take and was like shit he went there didn't he!?

"Sexy pose."

That & the scene in the car with Kim on the way to graduation ie: the "spanking Yale" part, I thought were a great entre into their relationship.

I went twice this weekend & I'm really glad that I did. I was able to pick up a lot more on the second go around.

Charlie/Sam interactions were awesome from the very serious (their discussion on Charlie seeing Sully) to the light & comical (I absolutely LOVED the rain surfing on garbage can lids) - I thought the two of them really nailed the whole brother thing.

There were two scenes that absolutely SLAYED me in the fact where I was like O_O holy shit zef, really? -- the ambulance scene & when he talks with Tess at her father's grave about not being 'there'. The first time around it was more slackjawed, while the second time I nearly lost myself, well I did at the later scene. Full out sniffing and tears.

Yes, I wish pacing was better and it didn't feel as rushed. Were there weird points (like the girls above said, the end scene in the woods was like that for me) yes of course.

Overall though given what he had to work with, I think he did a damn good job. He *was* Charlie - from the little nuances like the social awkwardness through how he spoke in certain scenes. There wasn't a point where I'm like ok hai Zef. I think he nailed the emotional aspects, better than I was expecting. IMO this was a good learning process/stepping stone for him for sure. Next projects hopefully will be more positive steps forward.

The bar scene REALLY sold me on Zac being able to portray Charlie's new, changed outlook on life. The moment when Alistair and his gf (Molly?) bump into Charlie while they're making out was great because it showed how people just sort of forget Charlie's even there. He looked increasingly uncomfortable, and that werewolf line... NO. Haha. Probably one of the more sad moments for me was when Charlie tries giving a "woot!" during Alistair's karaoke, and right away you see that it's so forced and not at all easing his stress about trying to be among his peers.

The mumbling and downcast eyes (not straight up STARING AT THE FLOOR, but how he did not favor looking people in the eye) were also selling mannerisms.

but she looked a bit... um... long in the tooth in the movie. like, her teeth quite literally looked 4 inches long.

Ok good it wasn't just me - there was the one close up shot of her when she's in town when it's finally dawning on her that she's not really there, her teeth looked gigantic.

Overall, my biggest complaint is the pacing...the first time I saw it I went 'whoa, this thing is moving fast'.

I saw it again today and I was definitely able to appreciate it more and pick up on little things I missed the first go around.

First things first...the ambulance scene. The first time I saw it I wasn't particularly moved, but this time I watched/listened closer and wow...the emotion was so heartbreaking and very well portrayed.

I LOVED the scene after they make love when Tess asks about the marks on Charlie's chest...'they saved your life they're beautiful.' GUH.

And the scene when Tess finally makes the realization that she's a spirit..."I'm getting cold Charlie, I'm scared." Heartbreaking. And then when Charlie starts to cry...that was the only time during the movie I felt compelled to reach for the Kleenex.

Zac's acting, with the exception of a scene or two, was superb. Like someone said, he WAS Charlie through and through.

Charlie Tahan was fantastic!! As I said before, he makes you fall in love with him without even trying. He made Sam's interaction with Charlie very believable and their bond was beautiful to watch. Not to mention, the little bits of humor he added made me chuckle and brought some much-needed humor.

Amanda Crew. I was nervous about seeing her performance because I had read quite a few comments that said she wasn't very good. The trailers really don't do her justice. I loved her character and her chemistry with Zac was undeniable.

I gotta say though, it took me until the second viewing to understand what the hell Alistair (Charlie's friend) was saying in most of his lines. LOL. When I did get it though, I liked his character purely for the humor he brought.

Overall, while the film was flawed, I don't blame the cast at all. They all turned in great performances. I believe it was Audrey who once said it and I'll borrow her sentiment because it's 100% true...Zac Efron can act the hell out of a script.

Aw, ty!

Re: Amanda Crew

Her intro into this project wasn't met with the kindest of regards for x,y, or z. I was UNIMPRESSED with media response to her casting, and although I'd hoped for better promo on her end, that too was pretty bleak. At the end of the day, this is Zac's movie- and she is not a major character (Charlie's role admittedly garners more screen time).

HOWEVER, her performance was honorable and believable. Given film adaptation changes (ages, looks, etc), she was still what I imagined Tess to be. As I said on a previous post, I hope the box office numbers/lackluster reviews don't contribute to her future work/star draw. I'm looking forward to watching her in "Repeaters" and seeing what else she brings to the table.

i've had the same issue so to speak with his movies ever since HS...when you know so much going in...trailers, spoilers, reading the novel, tv spots, etc, etc., its as if i'm anticipating every scene that i'm familiar with. idk, its weird...the 2nd time around i know i'll be able to better appreciate the overall film.

Agreed, Betty. I definitely learned not to watch all the spoilers next time. I felt like I'd seen 95% of the movie by the time it was released.

I've seen the movie twice, which I'm sure will be followed by a third time. I did not cry either tinme. I teared up at one point, slightly, when Charlie was on the boat on his way to Tess and he missed going out to the woods to meet same.

The biggest thing I missed the first time, that hit me this time:

The morning after Charlie/Tess made love and he was back at his house and he saw the note "Come Find Me" He ran and right away, he looked at the barn doors which were closed (the barn is where he kept his old sailboat) (in the other parts of the movie the doors were always open). He then looked out to see Tess sailing his boat. WELL.....I didn't realize that Tess was on his boat...the one that had been laying, untouched for 5 years, in the barn.

And later, after he realized she was 'in between' he went and looked at the boat, realizing that it was in no condition to sail....so Tess couldn't have been sailing it.

One thing I would have changed:
When Charlie went to say goodbye to Sam in the woods the last time, Sam was saying something like "I wish you could see what I've become..." I would have liked to have seen an older Sam and even though I knew it wasn't coming the second time I saw the movie....I was still hoping an older Sam would appear.

And the ONE thing I found annoying and there are 4 occurences I can think of....there were scenes in the trailers that were not in the movie.

As far as Amanda goes, I thought she was perfect for the part, but I'm not fan.

Ok, I never put two and two together that she was on his boat...WOW, I guess that would make sense.

And I agree with you about wishing we could have seen older Sam, but one thing I noticed today that I didn't catch the first time was when Sam said "I'd give anything for you to see me but we can never see what could have been" or something to that effect. I thought that tied up the storyline very well.

"sexy pose"

I knew the James Dean line wouldnt make it.

I loved all the music used, especially Andrew Bird's 'Oh No' right after the 5 years later.

I was more emotional when Charlie was finding his way in the world, rather than in the actual sad scenes. I cried during the bb Franco cemetary scene and other places.

Zac was wonderful.

pacing issues, yeah. but I wasnt distracted. I honestly dont mind 20 second scenes, or scenes that linger for 10 minutes.

Negs:

The pan-out/pan-in 5 years later i think it could have been more effectively executed, and saved the money on the cost of that shot.

the raining then seemingly weeping statue was a bit odd.

----

everyone was thoroughly surprised when the truth comes out about Tess.

I think it wouild have been more climactic has Tess still been in the boat... but on the other hand, less likely that someone could survive that long trapped in a boat.

I was unsure how the sam/face in the sky would be handeled/ but i thought it nice that it was the shooting star.

Was older Sam in any of the screenings? I wonder if people wanted to see Charlie Tahan again, and thats why the opt out of older Sam.

The song at the end was a lil funky at first.. but then i read the lyrics and i love it.

Did anyone check for wedding rings at the end, did they get married? champagne and all. jw.

I am sad that fans even of his is disappointed in the movie. idk I mean yes there are flaws but I felt overall it was an enjoyable film. I mean 2 of the 3 people I took didnt really want to see it and went because of me really liked it *shrug*.

Ambulance/grave scene w/ Charlie & Tess after realizing she's in between were def. the best scenes IMO...at least showing Zac's amazing acting. he was great too saying goodbye on the boat "forgive me Sam" :(

I love Allister! Brought that extra sense of humor that lifted the film.

I love the car scene with Charlie & Sam right before the accident "Nerd", "Blow Me". That little Sammy has a mouth on him...esp the innuendo about the magazine with Tess, I'm like OMG LOL. But it was very entertaining. LOVED the rain scene too!

I love after Charlie & Tess make love and tess asks about the marks on his check & she says 'they saved your life they're beautiful.' <3 <3 <3

idk I felt Zac played well with Amanda & Charlie! The movie did go fast, but storyline in the book...I felt it went fast too, esp in Tess/Charlie storyline.

Burr better not FUCK us over & not give us the deleted scenes or only put it on Blue Ray or I WILL BE PISSED!

I think this movie gave Zac the experience to show off what he can do. I think for what it was,it was an enjoyable movie! :)
