FRIDAY PM/SATURDAY AM: Sources just gave me these early box office numbers for Friday. I'll refine them when I post my analysis:
1. Dinner For Schmucks (Paramount) NEW [2,911 Dates]
Friday $8.5M, Estimated Weekend $24M
2. Inception (Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,545 Dates]
Friday $7.8M (-40%), Estimated Weekend $25M, Estimated Cume $190.3M
3. Charlie St Cloud (Universal) NEW [2,720 Dates]
Friday $7M, Estimated Weekend $18M
4. Salt (Sony) Week 2 [3,612 dates]
Friday $5.5M (-56%), Estimated Weekend $17M, Estimated Cume $68.5M
So if the numbers hold, it should end up at $18 million and third for the weekend. On average, most films in this genre make $14.5 million on opening weekend so making that much is quite an accomplishment given how badly the film is being reviewed and how poorly their promotion was executed (and even the fact that it is only pseudo-Sparks). In my opinion, taking into account these negatives, most of that box office is due to Zac's draw only which speaks positively to his value and worth.
eta: i should say, i'm not sure the $18 million will hold, the multiplier seems maybe kind of high. but we'll see. either way though, it still did well enough and it's all zac.
