Charlie St. Cloud Weekend Box Office
From Deadline:
FRIDAY PM/SATURDAY AM: Sources just gave me these early box office numbers for Friday. I'll refine them when I post my analysis:

1. Dinner For Schmucks (Paramount) NEW [2,911 Dates]
Friday $8.5M, Estimated Weekend $24M
2. Inception (Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,545 Dates]
Friday $7.8M (-40%), Estimated Weekend $25M, Estimated Cume $190.3M

3. Charlie St Cloud (Universal) NEW [2,720 Dates]
Friday $7M, Estimated Weekend $18M

4. Salt (Sony) Week 2 [3,612 dates]
Friday $5.5M (-56%), Estimated Weekend $17M, Estimated Cume $68.5M

So if the numbers hold, it should end up at $18 million and third for the weekend. On average, most films in this genre make $14.5 million on opening weekend so making that much is quite an accomplishment given how badly the film is being reviewed and how poorly their promotion was executed (and even the fact that it is only pseudo-Sparks). In my opinion, taking into account these negatives, most of that box office is due to Zac's draw only which speaks positively to his value and worth.

eta: i should say, i'm not sure the $18 million will hold, the multiplier seems maybe kind of high. but we'll see. either way though, it still did well enough and it's all zac.

I think Nikki's internal multiplier is a bit high but I'm very happy with $7m if it holds true.

Hoping it all holds steady - I had fingers crossed for top 3, it's nice to see so far it's fairing well considering all those other factors.

Checking on tickets around here for later today (for viewing #2) & there are some matinees that are already sold out. I know they were adding additional showings at the big AMC here because of the demand & the sell out that they had for the midnight showing.

What do we feel re: word of mouth? It's either 'OMG YES!' or 'Wtf, why did I waste my money?' Like the reviews, there's no middle ground.

Nikki just updated her post:

4. Charlie St Cloud (Universal) NEW [2,720 Dates]
Friday $5.6M, Estimated Weekend $15M

Rival studios think Friday's result is just Zac Ephron's High School Musical fans. Meaning it's frontloaded. Weeks of tracking had indicated only a $13M weekend. Surely that's why Zac did everything publicity-wise including envelope openings to push it. I don't comprehend why the marketing stupidly gave away the whole plot in the ads.

The Friday number is closer to what she had earlier before it got increased for a few hours. With a $5.6m Friday, $15m weekend seems high - it could easily go down to $13m imo.

what is "envelop openings?"

i didn't think the marketing gave away the whole plot??? the marketing in general sucked though anyway, and Universal should have anticipated they it would suffer when they shuffled the release date.

This is great news! I would be thrilled if CSC ended up third. I kinda thought it would be hard beating Dinner and Inception....but I didn't think it would have a hard time beating Salt, maybe because I have a strong dislike for Jolie.

Unfortunately at the multiplex movie theater that has 16 movies at one time where I go, they only have CSC in one theater and it also happens to be one of the smaller ones.

I did my part. I bought 2 tickets yesterday and while there I purchased another 3 tickets for tonight to go with friends.

You sound like me, haha. :) I asked C yesterday and she said we'd get one!

MY BOYFRIEND STARTED WIPING AT HIS EYES DURING ONE SCENE and I looked over and was like O_O and he literally goes "You didn't see that." :D

not to be a debbie downer of course but it's normal for it to fall after this. it's just a question of how slow it will fall.

but i'm so happy for him because he at least deserves for the film to make twice budget.

maybe Uni commisioned Watts to do a photoshoot and planning/planned to sell them out to different publications. So these pics could presumably show up in a bunch of various things.

don't get it
Well, I just don't get it. Why didn't CSC do better at the box office? I went to a 1030 show on a Sunday morning, and I thought that I'd be alone, but there were lots of people there. And it was a very diverse audience. Older, gray haired couples, 20-something couples, 30-something couples, teen girls, moms with younger daughters, single men, single women, black and white. I'm very disappointed. I think there's a fix in and someone fudged the numbers. Some Zac hater probably.
