This feels like the appearance which is supposed to make it ok for guys to go along with their girlfriends to watch the movie.

Talking about the strip club, manly camping and then the clip of him punching a guy in a bar (which is a clip not included normally in their promo material).

Almost (very?) calculated.

ITA. I left a long-winded comment at the end of the last post, but this sums everything up pretty nicely.

i saw the beginning of the convo last night, but it was bedtime for me, and time zones suck. i wanted to read back, but can't expand the comments? is it just me/my comp????

i enjoyed the interview...was it somewhat calculated? it appeared to be. for me, so much of what they do is a game, one in which he has to play in...and pretty much all young actors have to at some point or another, in some way or another. the "game" may have changed over the years, but not the system. *shrugs

i know i can get way too invested at times, but i think in general the average movie goer doesn't give most of this stuff a second thought. so for me, that's what i keep reminding myself, cause ultimately we don't really know him at all.

I agree with your sentiments, especially when you've stated cause ultimately we don't really know him at all.

I think some of the disappointment in a situation like this, is due to Zac upsetting fans' version or standard of what they think he is/should be versus who he is now, which can obviously change/grow/evolve.

People will have their opinions, as is to be expected, but at least here (on EHS', I mean) the argument seems to lie within career transitioning- and that struggle which at times can come across quite overtly.

im not sure i understand the problem. he went to a strip club with a friend, it was reported, he addressed it, the end.

most here say, 'change up the clips for the appropriate demo,' and when they show the clip in the bar, its "calculated".

might it have been an oversight to go to a strip club while promoting a family movie, maybe.... but it's PG13. He is drinking, taking off his clothes and having a sex/love scene with his co-star in the movie.

I honestly don't find this a set-up. To hide the fact that he went to a strip club, to be the "good boy" i feel would be worse.

and it has nothing to do with sexuality, i thought we all moved past that. I dont think the public needs the reminding of his masculinity.

I don't get the douche-vibe that other people seem to get.

oh well.
Beejeezbee on July 29th, 2010 03:26 pm (UTC)
To me, I don't have any problem with him going to a strip club nor is it about his sexuality. What makes me raise my eyebrows is the timing and the way it's been exploited.

He kept getting up to re-adjust his suit and I would say aloud "Where is he going?" because it looked as if he were about to walk offstage, lol.

By the end, my bf and I were like 'WHERE IS HE GOING?' and cracking up at how many times he did that little movement.

Okay so all of this talk about the strip club trip is really bothering me.
I think in the industry Zac is in, every single move is wayyyy to heavily calculated. And with all the publicity surrounding this movie, i'm sure his moves are even more-so calculated right now. And wether or not this was a publicity stunt, the way i look at this is, people are going to hear about this and laugh. He's a 22 year old guy and this is what men in Hollywood do.
And as for this affecting his image or anything like that, I don't think it will do much. I really don't think hes trying to put a false image out there of who he really is. Every single one of his moves reflects on the person he is, and honestly him being a 22 year old guy, hes not too above the strip club atmosphere and i don't blame him at all for doing that. Maybe it was a wrong choice, but its a choice he made.
I love Zac so much. The respect I have for him is insane. I think hes picking movies that are keeping him relevant. I also think he handles his personal life in a respectable way. And being able to sit there laughing about the strip club thing on tv is also something I respect. Its as if hes just basically saying, "yeah i went to a strip club, im a guy, guys do that thing" and everybody is over analyzing this.
I think the bottom line is, Zac is a great actor, and everybody knows he is going places. This strip club thing won't be the be-all end-all of him.
graceny17 on July 29th, 2010 04:18 pm (UTC)
While the whole strip club thing could have been a calculated move I feel like it was probably something he wanted to experience. Not every part of his life is lived to further his career . . . at least I hope not. Jimmy has an audience to appeal to also and to show the mushy stuff they've been showing on the promo tour wouldn't really work for his audience. The strip club thing came up and that of course was a better direction.

On the Nicholas Sparks thing, give the kid a break. We all know he's capable of much better. While I am a fan of Sparks books I agree that the movie versions are typically lacking. However knowing this story I can see why it might appeal to Zac. The main character has a highly trained dog that is with him through the entire thing. Not since Derby Stalion have we seen him interact with animals and we haven't seen it on the big screen yet. Maybe he's looking at that being a good learning experience. It could be as simple as Mom or Grandma enjoy Sparks and wanted him to do it. Tom Hanks did many romantic type movies (some worked, some flopped) and it didn't seem to hold him back at all. It just seems very unfair to be so critical when as far as I can tell you don't know the story or the experience of the character. Coming from my angle I can see why this particular story would be something Zac would think he could work with and learn from. It's just possible that Zac's talent will bring a new level of expectation to a Sparks film - if the rumors are even true that he's ready to sign on to the film.

Okay, so i have a question that is kinda totally irrelevant to this post, but does anybody have any predictions on what cstc will do in the box office this weekend?? Ive read things online going anywhere from 10m to 25m. And if it does end up making in the higher teens, lower 20's is that pretty good for a movie of this genre?
Troll St. Trollglamour_addict on July 29th, 2010 04:45 pm (UTC)
1. Iception
2. Dinner
3. Salt
Charlie?
4/5. Cats and Dogs (1200 more screens than Charlie)
5/6. Despicable

Id be very surprised if Charlie makes the top 3. and with as many screens opening Cats and Dogs, very surprised if Charlie beats that.

Personally, I loved Kmmel last night. And that's saying a lot because usually when Zac's on I have to force myself to even watch. To me, Zac seemed more relaxed and "himself" than we've seen in a long time.

Re: the strip club. I don't think it's a big deal at all. In fact, in a weird way, it's a refreshing reminder that he's a 22 year-old man who just wants to live his life in spite of the constant attention and cameras trying to track him down. He may be a homebody or whatever but I don't think one "slip-up" is reason to question him. We know he's not a saint, nor should he be at his age. But based on the other headlines in Hollywood these days, this is minor.

I genuinely don't understand why people are saying he's exploiting it? Jimmy asked about it and he addressed it. He chose to take the high toad and not lie or avoid the question. If he had done that'd we'd all be sitting here asking why he didn't address it to put the rumor to rest. So he talks about it once and that's exploiting it or it's a PR stunt? I guess I don't get it...it's not like he took out a full page ad in People and said "Look I'm Zac Efron and I went to a strip club...I'm a man now!"

I guess my thinking is if people aren't going to see this movie, it's not because Zac Efron had a moment of questionable judgement and went to a strip club. From what I hear it has its own issues but I haven't seen it so I can't judge fully until tomorrow. I don't think most people will even give this a second thought now that it has been addressed (and very well I might add) in such a matter of fact way by Zac himself.
Shruticalcified on July 29th, 2010 05:59 pm (UTC)
For a purportedly very private person, spending half+ of his interview talking about strip clubs in the most banal, smarmy way (albeit a bit cute b/c he's zac but) is completely out of character.

I don't understand why people keep saying he's 22 and can't have judgment put on him. No one cares that he went to a strip club. They care how he's selling himself.

I think people are way overreacting. Was it planned? Totally, he had rehearsed those jokes. Was it out of character? For promo!Zac sure, but if we're talking real!Zac I don't think it was. He's a person, he's not a brand. He's gonna fuck up and be hypocritical and be douchey at times. But on levels of douchiness, its not like he was fucking some stripper sideways onstage. He went to a stripclub with friends. He didn't blow 2k and he called his girlfriend. What is so douchey about that?

If we're talking presentation, I think he did fine too. It was obvious that he prepped but would you really have wanted him to go in unprepped to mumble and bumble his way though? I thought he maintained enough humility and slight embarrassment that it wasn't douchey at all, and I'd hazard to say that this is probably the way Zac is in private. People need to remember that a good 85 - 95% of what we see of Zac is what he wants us to see, and not the whole package.

I could go on but honestly I'm frustrated at the reactions here. Have some faith in him, even if he is doing some stupid shit right now.

I don't really get why everyone is judging him/over reacting over this. Yes he has said in many interviews that he isnt a party type/club guy...that doesn't mean he can't go out and experience them when he wants...and NYC is one of the best places to do it. I honestly don't think is calculated....I think people are over analyzing the situation. If it was....why go w/ a HSM co-star....which is tied back to his squeaky clean image. Honestly I think he just went out to have a good time, and didnt really put much thought into the repercussions it would have. This isnt a family type film either, its PG13 so I don't think that matters either TBH. But I do agree, it probably wasn't the smartest idea to go to one a week before your movie comes out but I don't think its a big deal. Either way he had to address the issue & I think he did/said what he should have...honestly, giving the truth, but yet light hearted....plus he's comfortable/been on Kimmel a few times...so I don't thnk it conflicts how he's been in other interviews....or is fair to compare them because a lot of these interviewers we haven't seen with Zac before. I think it shows a lot that he called Vanessa before hand as well. So for god sakes cut the boy some slack & stop judging/criticizing everything he does. He's human, he has a life, and people make wrong judgmental calls....that's life!

I have to agree with you He said it was a celebration with Corbin. Not wise but so typically young male. Also He is out marketing his product, which in this case is his movie & himself, he wants to reach as many people as possible and it seems like his older dedicated fans want him to go beyond the teen fan base. This could of been deliberate but I also think this guy is sincere as well as being intellient when it comes to promoting his films.

hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on July 30th, 2010 05:01 am (UTC)
to be clear, we aren't judging him for going to a strip club... we are judging that he's spent the last two weeks being like 'oh yeah, yk i just make good decisions about clubbing, etc. and keep it private' and then does something like this when the media scrutiny on him is at its highest level in over a year.

i like how he handled it, i thought it was fine and great that he owned up to it, but it seems like if he keeps on saying shit that can be paraphrased as 'oh i'm awesome i don't fuck up' and then fucking up (within the context of promoting this film that is), he's going to start pissing people off when he doesn't need to and it could be avoided by just not emphasizing so strongly 'i don't fuck up (publicly)' in the first place.

there are other hypocrisies i see but idk, i'm tired and i've stated my point other places. and i don't really want to drag this out further.
