But do you think people really want to see manequinny Zef? That's actually my least favorite movie personality of his - and irl too, it's so endlessly dull. I'm not saying he can't brood; I'm saying him brooding almost exclusively doesn't sell Zef's likability like the movie could. That said I totally don't get when ONTD fawns over the most boring candids of him - since his face has such potential for vivacity, it just bores me, personally? - so maybe I am not the target demo. Why. I can be a good Zef stan! ;______;

I actually don't mind the scene at all! I just don't think it fits with the vibe of the whole segment.

I mean tbf: metrocard's mom was all about the clip, even if metrocard herself was like........airplanes and boys with dead brothers don't need wishes, this spot is whack. So it works... I guess we'll see the import of the Twibase; people's love for Edward almost seems to be to justify brooding rather than because of it (he broods because wanting Bella is SO HARD, not due to aromantic interests) but I have very specific thoughts on The Allure Of The Teenage Vampire haha.

Ew I hate wolves, like I can't even pretend to be Team Jacob in jest because I hate them sfm. Also cause Taylor has that face.

OMG I LOVE THE IDEA OF ALL AMERICAN VAMPIRE ZEF. MAYBE LIKE.......A ZOMBIE. OR LIKE REESE WITHERSPOON'S CHARACTER IN JUST LIKE HEAVEN IS PERFECT FOR HIM. A LITTLE BIT NEUROTIC, A LITTLE BIT TAN, A LITTLE BIT PREPPY, A LITTLE BIT PRETTY, A LOT BIT DEAD.

Um... I wish he would pummel me with his perfect manbits and then jizz on my freckles, but I wouldn't be a whore about it like his gf obviously is since she has sex with him and only whores do that with their own bfs.
oh my god; that crazy bitch.metrocard on June 4th, 2010 03:54 am (UTC)
OMG WHY ARE YOU EXPOSING MY EMBARRASSING MOTHER TO THE INTERNET?! ;_______;

I don't know about manequinny Zef but I don't think trying to sell this movie with all happy Charlie works. Because that's not what his character is about. Sure, there are also good moments but trying to sell it on Zac's likability is a bit like Summit tried with Vanessa's character in Bandslam. False advertising.

What I like personally about it is that it's seemingly different from his own personality and esp different from his previous characters. Being charming might be the easier sell for the kiddies but I rather see them trying to see it on his character than him personally.

i don't think they should sell charlie as just charming or that they should be misleading and depend only on zac's history or personality. but there has to be more to charlie than just 90 minutes of morose, pensive staring or this movie is going to suck.

and the thing is, we know that isn't all there is to charlie. so why limit the ads to 75% being pensive shots of his pensiveness, just in different color tshirts. and it seems like a really narrow-range of zac's ability as an actor too (which is a hurdle he has to get over with a lot of people still ofc, as much as their perception that he can only smile like a ken doll).

at any rate, i like them cause i like anything that shows more zac/movie. but i am worried they are kinda flat.

it's kind of why i'm hesitant to post to ontd because i don't really think these ads represent the film or charlie or zac nearly as well as the trailer. i am afraid that a: ontd will crucify him for the james dean thing and b: they'll find it boring.

i could be totally off on that and i probably will post them at some point maybe with some other pics.

2nd try... now much shorter though.

It only works for me under the assumption that there will be other TV spots following highlighting different aspects of the movie and character.

30-45 seconds is just really short to get the plot across, esp in a drama (even a saccharine one) which can't focus just on a couple jokes or stuff blowing up while the plot/characters linger only in the background. And trying to put pensive/happy/etc all in one short spot rarely works imo. It just dilutes everything and potentially confuses people because there is so little time. Plus, they will shortly be bored by it (playing similar spots who try to show all facets of the character for the next 2 months).

If they follow through with several spots which together tell a bit a story (my guess would be on the next one about the brother relationship and the one after about his romance with Tess), I think it could work as long as you don't put people off by earlier spots and being slightly boring/passive is no showstopper. So everyone can have that clip which appeals to them the most.

Starting off by showing the character as pensive and a bit broody isn't a bad thing imo. It's almost like, 'hey, looks he's nothing like the high school jock he typically plays'

I get your point about falling flat though. This spot is not perfect and Charlie being a bit more active/doing something while being depressed would probably improve it.

As for ONTD ~ A provocative preemptive comment about the James Dean line might help focus their hate onto the teenage girls and not Zac; but yeah they likely will go for the jugular on that one.

Re the boring bit - I believe the movie still has too little awareness for most people to check the clip out unless they already have a bit an interest or only want to trash it anyway. I just think that there is a reasonably part of people (on ONTD and otherwise) who dislikes this type of movie in general, Zac or not Zac, Sparks or not. And Zac being in it, is like an invite for the haters to come out.

But in case that is the only/main spot, I'm fully with you. This would be a total misrepresentation and underselling the movie.

I've been rewatching the clip today and I still think a spot establishing the character as depressed and weird works well in a mix of others (and thankfully we got one more by now already), I do agree that a bit different footage instead of a few pensive shots would work better.

There has to be footage out there where Charlie comes across just as weird but more active/funny.

Eg. they could use the geese hunt - in the context of the movie it makes sense but if people don't know what he's doing everyone would think he's crazy/weird.

Or even the meeting with Sully and Alistar's reaction. The fact that he can see his brother's ghost is already established earlier in the clip, they might as well go all the way to make him look crazy.

Both scenes might be more intriguing but would still fit into establishing his character as outcast.
