"But he smiled all the way through it..."

I don't want to spend too much time on this because we've really moved on to other things, so just a few words...

Basically I was frustrated that the event planners seemingly did not do a sufficient job preparing for even the most likely problems and the mishandling of media coverage didn't help either.

It probably shouldn't have bothered me as much as it did. Maybe it was just because it seemed like a few small preventative steps could have averted the drama and left everyone more satisfied, things like having real crowd control, a weather contingency plan, and better setting up what Zac was doing there, i.e. no he's not there to learn to surf (duh, he already knows) and no he's not there to surf for the cameras (which the pros didn't do either as far as I know)... he's there to help out.

It was unfortunate that some people were rather disappointed and frazzled by the whole thing, in particular Annette Sharp. And that because Zac is the name, no matter what good intentions he came into the event with, he is the one on whom all the blame was transferred... unfairly.

Of course, in a situation like this the negative stuff tends to come first and then the good responses trickle through later. That is what has made me feel better about it over time. Finally some of what was really happening and how crazy it was came out. In particular, this radio interview came up...

So that was just really lovely to hear. Typical that he'd make the best of it. I am determined to do the same, lol. Anyway... that added some perspective and I appreciated it. Also, if you want to see Peter Harvey's original report (in which his pants went nuts) click here.

In another interview, Hamish and Andy talk to Layne Beachley about the crazy event:

Also there is a story about the event from one of the participants here.

FYI: I posted the Bondi interviews and other video with additional event pics from the restaurant here.

omg he should totally smile more in fan pics! i'm a little confused on the drama though... what exactly happened?

this one woman who participated was kind of very bitchy about him in her write up and video report of the event (and at times factually incorrect too... like saying vanessa was in the water too). she had reasons to be upset because the event was kind of miserable overall but she should've probably thought about the bigger picture before just blaming it all on him.

and then all the other media coverage which made it sound like he was too much of a baby to take a lesson or surf in public when that wasn't his goal at all. legit surfing wasn't even really feasible given the conditions and on top of that there was the onslaught of fans they had no way of controlling and did not plan for at all.

like i said, i probably overreacted but it got me down to think how a few small steps could've prevented some of that negativity.

it did seem like a mess of an event.

i checked the webcams for bondi off and on all morning before the event started trying to see where they'd set up but nothing ever happened. i figured they'd at least put up barriers to keep fans organized. but nothing! and of course then there was just a mob of people. i was pretty baffled.

like i just lol at this pic because it looks like that guy is about to pick him up and throw him in the buggy to save him from the crush of fans and photogs:

i mean, the weather... there just isn't much to be done about that. but the fan and media situation was out of control.

i think this was a smack of reality for zac somewhat. he's probably more famous than he thinks and because of that situations are gonna be blamed on him that are out of his control. which sucks.

hum awkward pic.

In the videos, I was pretty surprised that the only 'security' around was that small blonde woman.. she's in the pic actually. I mean, in the event of a riot, what was she going to do? Tackle the fans? Or was she hiding a taser gun... JK

All in all, it's pretty shitty. But there's more positive things now to focus on, so... yeah. I hope Zac's enjoying his vacation, if that's what he's doing now!

You didn't overreact at all. I've followed this event really closely, read every article, I scoured the news stations here - exactly as you just said, the general vibe of the coverage was just very slanted and inaccurate and it upset me. In the grand scheme of things, no one is paying attention to the minor details though. One of the ladies at my work whose daughter loves Zac knows I love him too and she commented to me 'I saw that Zac is here, mate he's looking mighty fine!' and she had to ask me why he was here because she didn't quite understand why, she just knew he'd been at the beach looking hot and he'd been mobbed by fans.
