Of course I'm settling back in & am around now.

Can I please gush now a little at the confrontation scene between Orson & Richard? The range of emotion that just poured out from there. It's probably my favorite scene in the movie.

i thought i responded to this but it isn't showing so... yes i like that scene a lot and it is probably zac's best work in the film.

one thing i would like to ask the critics who didn't like zac, is how much of that they'd blame on the character being thinly written and how much on zac.

i feel, as always, there is always room for improvement in his performance, but a lot of the weaknesses i feel stem from richard being a pretty blank and undeveloped character.
zaccy23zaccy23 on December 5th, 2009 09:42 pm (UTC)
So I read and loved the book and was quite pleased with the way the movie turned out. I agree with others that they feel Richard's back story was left out but I figured it probably would. It's too bad though because those truly were some of the funniest moments.

Now back to the movie. First off my two favorite scenes. When Orson and Richard jump in the ambulance and get whisked away to do live radio. I loved the single shot and it was filmed exactly the way I imagined. Second fav part was when Richard was on the stoop waiting for Sonja and orson. He was so sad and confused and Orson was so mean.

I loved the music and have a much greater apreciation for Linklater as a filmmaker now. I thought the story moved at a good pace and believed Richard and Sonja's chemistry.

What I couldn't get over most of all is how much the camera loves Zac's face. I often found myself wanting the shot to go back to him. I had never realized that before. I do think his hair off his forehead makes a huge difference.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. In no way do I think this was Zac's shining moment. I'm still most impressed by Miracle Run but I'm so happy that he chose to do this movie and I can't wait to continue to watch what he choses to do next.

there was one shot... the close up of this, i think:

and i was just like, 'ugh his face is amazing'. lol. it was very striking.

and in terms of his performance i agree that i don't think this is his breakout performance. and i kind of understand what some critics were saying that someone else might have been better... but then i circle back and think the things that zac brought to the role i don't know that someone else could have done.

Re: Zac's role (script vs. performance) I'm curious to this as well - going in not having read the book, I feel like I've had a bit of a different perspective and my opinion is coming from a different angle because of that as well.

Will be cracking the book after I pick it up at Borders later tonight (as long as the snow behaves itself)
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on December 5th, 2009 11:32 pm (UTC)
i am actually really hoping the script gets posted somewhere because i'd like to see the comparison.

i'd like to see if some of the choices were his or the writers. one in particular that my friend thought was a big deal 'yeah' vs 'yes'.

Where you at, bb? It's not a time to laugh, but your comment reminded me of when Letterman was all 'I hope your theater was chosen' or whatever. :/

Quadruple space forever!

bettybaby63bettybaby63 on December 6th, 2009 12:57 am (UTC)
OMFG love, love, love quadruple space!

and yes, yes! the scene where he's waiting for orson and sonjia to emerge from their night together.....he's got the whole lost little boy thing captured perfectly. i mean just the way he's sitting on the stoop, legs all akimbo, lame sneakers.....the whole deal...uggghhhh i really loved that scene, b/c he finally learns his bullshit won't always carry him through!

and although i missed some of the backstory from the novel, i felt they/he conveyed all they needed to with his character????

favorite parts?

What was everyone's favorite scenes?

Mine was for sure the actual performance of the play. I got goose bumps, and Zac's singing was wonderful. I was curious if they were going to have his voice crack like in the book or not and I'm happy they didn't.

Re: favorite parts?
I don't even know why but when Orson was talking about jealousy and arrogance inside the theater I was LOL'ing.

Favorite Zac scene? Probably when Richard and Sonja are at Orson's getaway (And no, not because of the kiss WHICH WAS BLOCKED BY CLAIRE'S BACKSIDE ANYWAYS?!??), because I think Zac is brilliant at portraying naive- his mannerisms (spilling the wine, etc) in that scene killed me.

I'm not reading because I haven't seen it yet. I'm way behind on my internets here, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but does anyone know when it might be opening in the Missouri/Kansas area? I wanna see it so bad.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on December 6th, 2009 10:55 pm (UTC)
you know it's hard to guess. next week it is supposed to expand to 40+ theaters so probably every major market, like seattle, san fran, chicago, etc.

but idk about smaller places. do you have a good indie film theater near you?

there were so many scenes i liked. the sprinkler one was up there.....even after reading the book, i was kinda holding my breath when orson was ranting "sabotage" i didn't really remember exactly what happened....the way zac portrayed fear and shame before his cockiness took hold, and then he makes orson happy it happened. the theater i was in laughed out loud!

and quadruple space definitely owns. he had the whole "holy shit this is really gonna happen" vibe down perfectly.

oh, another little small one was when his yukalale went missing b/c one of the cast stole it as a joke. when he flipped him the finger it drew yet another round of chuckles from the audience.
Troll St. Trollglamour_addict on December 6th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
LOVED it.

*whispers* I recorded the audio so I can hear it again and again. Shhhh. (listened to it 4 times now.)

C - I listened to the audio and followed along with the book. Most scenes are pretty damn close to word-for-word.

Bullet point review:

- Classroom scenes remind me of Hairspray.

- Gretta is wonderful! The Gaiety scene was just like I imagined.

- The "Possibilities" line was a nice addition to the story.

- Lloyd/Cinna was hilarious throughout.

- I missed the jewishness of the book. But it wasn't a huge loss.

- Muriel/Portia is a gem.

- "How'd I do" ... "I cried" So funny. Credit to the screenadapter.

- I wish this remianed unaltered: MOVIE: "What's it like to be a beautiful women?" NOVEL: "I always thought being a beautiful women would be interesting. To know what it feels like. Does this mean I'm a homosexual?"... "yes."

- I do and don't miss the New Jersey stuff. I wonder if any was filmed? I'm curious to see what was left on the cutting room floor. I think all the Caroline stuff would get in the way. Gretta is where its at.

- Leve was awesome. Still missing the jewsishness... but he was great and reminded me of myself.

- "I think some asshole Doth stole it." - awesome.

- Can't wait for the gifs of Richard flipping-off Lloyd.

- Missed the post-coital scene. I hope it was filmed.
*fingers crossed for directors cut dvd!*

- Loved how much of Julius Caesar was shown.

- Zac's voice was so soothing! A few verses were cut from the song and brought down an octave or half. I hope the full song was recorded. "dee dee dums" were changed to hums. and was more effective as a lullaby.

- Missed the Richard/Leve scene.

- Wished the blonde kid outside Orson's dressing room, opening night was left in. Where Richard calls him Junior.

- I loved the look of Jeannie the lighting designer.

- "You can tell they've screwed." Once again the actor playing Lloyd killed it.

- "Orson and I, we're just so simpatico" - Muriel

- In the book there were several lines and mentionings of the Depression I felt should have remianed. Its great motivation for why these characters were so driven to succeed.

- In the book Richard has a monologue re. Orson which he tells Sonja. I wish this remained... but I'm sure it was redundant.

- I loved all the changes made with Gretta and Richard. "possibilities" and what not. I loved the ending. Cheesy? maybe. Cliche? perhaps. But It was honest and real and just right. It was ambiguous. Will Richard be like Welles? Will he form a writing partnership with Gretta? Its up to you.

I see many award noms in its future.... and the box office numbers to steadily rise.
