I can see why they think it is a big deal... I mean it's got all the hallmarks of being one... it's indie, it's an important director, it's got a great cast, it's a big topic, etc.

But I think once that project comes along where he really does break out then people will be saying all the same things. It's just the way they sell stuff.

I am also sort of reminded in this convo of this twitter I read yesterday or the day before:

@popcornaddict High School, check. Singing, check. Dancing, check. Just your usual Zac Efron movie then, just with less basketball added snore factor

Which is a really shallow and rather unfair view on the movie but in it's way isn't completely false.

lololol but you're right. It's not wrong at all to say he's been doing very similar things. I wish people emphasized the differences in personality more but...I hate to say it, there aren't a huge number. Like that Empire video, how is Mark O'Donnell or Troy Bolton not a suave overachiever (wrong w.c.) go-getter? How does the latter not discover his love for theater? How do either not start to understand love? Etc. He hasn't sold me at all on what has changed from character to character.

I think Mike/Mark is the most different but Link, Troy and Richard are basically all somewhere on the continuum that is high school aged entertainer.

lol funny you say that because as I was watching the movie last night I kept thinging 'this isn't any different than we've seen before, just a different setting.' I actually think that Mike/Mark gave him a meater character and role and that he did better in it.
