Update on Hairspray 2
Adam Shankman discussed HS2 with Marc Malkin:

It's going to be awhile before John Travolta slips into a housecoat again.

Hairspray director Adam Shankman tells me the sequel to his 2007 musical box office hit is far from being a done deal...

"We are looking for a writer right now," he said. "There's no music written. It's just a bunch of ideas. No one's signed on to do it."

Hairspray, based on the Broadway adaptation of John Waters' cult classic film of the same name, starred a crossdressing Travolta as Edna Turnblad, then-newcomer Nikki Blonsky as her daughter Tracy and Zac Efron as singing sexpot Link Larkin.

This comes as no surprise honestly... Adam has a lot on his plate.

oh wow.....i guess its really far from being a done deal.

i also wonder how RoA will affect the schedule. i have to wonder whether or not adam would be enthusiastic about filming back-to-back musicals?????

I'm glad we got "confirmation" what I thought was the case.

And with "Rock of Ages" Adam will be busy with directing (and whatever he does on top of that) until mid 2011 anyway. IF (and that's a big if) he would film HS2 back-to-back right away, the earliest possible start of rehearsing/filming would be beginning of 2012. But I think even that is too early given the current situation. With so many projects lined up, I would expect that Adam would be looking after the production side of his other movies for a little while before he directs the next movie; and then it's still up in the air if it's HS2 - there are so many things which need to fall into place with the script, music, huge (and now expensive) cast and availabilities. And by 2012 many things could have changed.

Now Zac only needs to stay away from RoA if he gets approached but I actually think (hope) it's rather unlikely that he would be part of it. They want to sell this to a more male-centric audience than traditional musicals and with that Zac is actually not the best casting (because many males dislike him already) and I also think he's also too young. More likely candidates imo would be people like Russell Brand (does he sing? in that case he might be perfect), Jake Gyllenhaal, Evan McGregor, Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling and Johnny Depp if he hadn't already done Sweeney Todd.

Anyway, when I said I don't want Zac to do another musical soon I really meant all of them, so I keep my fingers crossed that he stays far away from RoA and hopefully every other musical which might come his way for the next few years.

PS: I've just been at E!Online reading the whole thing... either someone is impersonating me or has the same nickname. lol

I kind of feel like since this project is so far off the longer it takes the less likely Zef is to do it. Let's say this start filming in 2012 I feel like at this point Zac will have the seperation he wants from musicals and then to go back to Hairspray it would seem like he was talking two steps back. I just think the more it's pushed back the less likely he's to do it which is too bad for Hairspray fans.
Beejeezbee on October 22nd, 2009 11:40 pm (UTC)
I think he will do another musical in the future and as long as he has himself established outside that genre by then I'm looking forward that (and by established I mean being known for other things which realistically takes at least a few years and not just do 2-3 non-musicals).

However, I do hope once he goes back he'll chose to do an adult musical and will have a lead role. Aside from the typecasting issues I feel most strongly about, I also think that HS2 won't bring him forward in any way since it would be a supporting role (even if they expand Link) and as much as I love the first Hairspray it is a PG-rated family musical.

I agree with you that it would feel like a step back if he does it after a few years but I really prefer for Zac to have a long career because he was able to move on from the family-friendly musicals which made him famous instead of doing it and most likely falling into the trap of typecasting which he is already struggling to get out of. I don't want him to sacrifice his career to please the people who want him in HS2. JMHO.

As for someone who REALLY wants HS2, I think based on Adam's schedule and such, it seems like "if" it would happen it would be not for a while & the buzz isn't there like it was when the news came out 1+ year ago.....and I agree the longer it takes the less likely Zac would agree to sign on....idk to me if everyone behind HS2 really wanted to do it, then it wouldn't still be in the "finding the writer stage" for almost a year. I don't think John's personal stuff helps the pace either....idk...

It sucks because most of the cast seemed opened to the idea :( When Zac did speak about it, he seemed genuine about the possibility imo too.

I DONT think Adam, or Zac would do the project if the idea for the sequel wasn't good. Loyalty or not.....and I DONT think it would be a step back either. I would like to give Zac and the people behind the project a little more credit then that, esp basing it off nothing. Zac has improved & grown a lot as a person, man & most importantly an actor since Hairspray but thats JMHO. I just think its bad timing TBH...shame I was really hoping it would come together :( I think for the sequel to fully capitalize on its success it should of been done in a more productive/timely matter....Hey either way the original is still what made me into a Zac fan & one of my all time favorite movies :)

Even though I don't want it to happen (or at least not with Zac), I feel for you. It's always sad if things don't work out the way we want them to.

I think the Hairspray box office numbers weren't really strong enough for them to push that hard after the initial idea/enthusiasm was fading and all the challenges became visible.

It "just" made $200m worldwide - not that it is bad by any means but with a $75m budget and a fairly sized promotion budget on top of that, it made money but it wasn't a huge blockbuster either. And if you take into account that the cast will now probably ask for more money because sequels are done to capitalize from the original audience and it realistically it is a higher risk project (Grease 2 anyone?), it's not *that* attractive financially as it initially appeared anymore.

IIRC, they announced the sequel briefly after the big success of Mamma Mia! but in the meantime while successful other musicals have not shown the same box office power (or even failed like Fame). That doesn't mean it can't happen but it takes away the urgency to make it.

I agree that John's personal situation is not helping matters either.

My reference to the project being a step back goes mainly to the notion that it's a supporting role and because it's a pure family movie. It's a step back in respect to being similar to the movies he has moved on from (I know that Hairspray and HSM is not the same but for the general viewing audience they fall into the same category); it has little to do with the actual script in my eyes.

i'm just really excited and curious what zac's next project may be....

knowing him, it will come out of nowhere, and surprise us all. we all thought he was destined for footloose, and then he dropped it, and BAM....CstC was announced, and before we knew it, it went into production....

i kinda like getting the news that way b/c we don't have the wait and see game!!

This was not what I wanted to see when I logged on tonight. I'll be the first to admit, I'm sad but not altogether surprised. From a purely fan standpoint, Hairspray was one of the only movies that has ever touched me on such a deep level. With its message of acceptance and equality it hit especially close to home. I was looking forward to seeing what great message they could convey in the sequel.

That said, I knew from the beginning that I couldn't watch a sequel if the original team wasn't behind it. Because, to me, Zac is Link, Nikki is Tracy, John is Edna...you get the idea. But if we don't get a sequel at least we have the 2007 version.

In terms of Zac, let me just say if it weren't for that movie I would have no earthly clue who he was. Back in the day I had never even heard of HSM and I so vividly remember sitting in the theater going 'who are earth IS that kid?' and as they say, the rest is history. I'm so glad Hairspray could introduce me to such a conscientious, sweet, level-headed actor that I am so proud to be a fan of. Zac is an extreme rarity in Hollywood these days and I think it is so great that Adam had the confidence in him to put him in the film that really made him mainstream.

I understand that his career has moved on, and I respect that, but if you want my honest opinion I think that the 'he shouldn't do musicals for awhile' thing doesn't make much sense. Let's face it, in the eyes of a lot of people, High School Musical already set him up to be typecast. I agree that he should diversify his career, but I think future musicals become the scapegoat for a typecast that, in the eyes of many, has already happened. I was excited when he expressed enthusiasm about HS 2 because I love him as Link, but if the time has come to close that chapter of the Hairspray tradition, at least they went out on a high note.

Hairspray has brought me some great friends, given me opportunities I never thought I'd have in a million years, and best of all, it's just an all-around fun movie with a fantastic cast.

/end over-emotional post. LOL

lol we knew all of this already. At least I did.

I think the whole JT thing has effected it alot. They're not going to do it without him and he's not in the position to do it right now with his son passing and everything.

I still think they could do it and there's a possibility of it happening, but who knows.

As for Zac, if the original cast signs on and its a good story, I think he'd do it. Chance to work with his friends, work with amazing actors and actresses again, he'd be stupid not to IMO. I don't see him doing a musical between now and then honestly.
