love the review.....i'm really hoping that with the academy going to 10 best pic noms, this will have a chance. i said it earlier, the poster is all wrong....now why don't they have us in charge of marketing?????

and how significant is this review in terms of prestige/legitimacy????

does anyone know?

Wellesnet has also 2 more comments/reviews on their forum:
http://wellesnet.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=405&start=75

I think their comments demonstrate very nicely why we are getting so mixed reviews.

Many of the viewers want the movie to be something else - not that it promised to be something else but they want it to be a gritty and realistic drama about Welles and his theater, and are disappointed when the fictional coming-of-age story of Richard "gets in the way."

As for the Oscar chances in general. Tbh, I don't think the chances are any good. For one, the reviews on the movie are mixed and Oscar contenders typically have at least 75-85% fresh on RT. Well have to see where M&OW ends up but based on the TIFF reviews I don't think it'll be that high.

But more importantly, Oscar nominations aren't as objective as they want to appear. It's a political game and requires a lot of lobbying and an expensive awards campaign. I don't think CinemaNX has a few extra millions to spend on an expensive awards campaign and Linklater is by his own admission an Hollywood outsider. There is a reason why Weinstein's movies are so successful at the Oscars - he is an relentless lobbyist who talks (pressures?) Academy members into voting for his movies. I don't see anyone doing the same for M&OW.

Depending on the final critical reception of the movie and the box office results (yes, those play a role too), I can potentially see McKay getting a nomination but nothing else. It might not be fair but I think it's reality.
