Robert Rave talks more about Spin and Zac
Continuing to promote his book, Robert Rave spoke to MTV more in depth about Zac's possible participation in the film adaptation of Spin.

Zac Efron To Star In 'Spin'? Author Robert Rave Gives Us The Details On The Movie Adaptation Of His Novel!
by Teri Schwartz

It doesn’t get more flattering than Zac Efron’s people taking a look at a movie treatment based on your debut novel the day it is released. Such is the case with Robert Rave (pictured above, left), whose first book “Spin” hit bookstores yesterday. We were lucky enough to get a chance to speak with Robert about his new book, the potential movie and the irony of Hollywood taking an interest in his novel considering what the plot is about.

While clearly stating his book is not a memoir, Robert’s post-college history mirrors that of his main character, Taylor Green: both moved from the Midwest to pursue careers in the Big City in the field of public relations. But Taylor’s experience is a bit more rough than Robert’s own story. Taylor starts working for media-vixen Jennifer “Jennie” Weinstein who ultimately controls the entire entertainment underworld of New York City.

The plot line seems close to another good-employee-turned-bad-by-evil-boss story, “The Devil Wears Prada,” and Robert agrees the similarities are there. The big difference, he says, is that “Spin” is told from a male perspective unlike most novels which are told from female leads, but also that his ending isn’t a “happy-go-lucky happy ending” like witnessed in “Prada.”

“I like to say this character kind of descends into darkness, insomuch as he gets really caught up in that world [of PR],” Robert told Hollywood Crush in an exclusive interview, “and it kind of asks the question of how far would you go to keep your job? And, you know, whereas a lot of these [other] characters, like I said, they come out unscathed, but like can you still come out unchanged? So for him, I don’t want to tell you the ending, it’s not a happy ending [laughs].”

For Robert, the news that Zac was looking at the role was exactly what he wanted to hear. “To be honest with you, as corny as it’s going to sound, I thought Zac Efron would be perfect for Taylor,” he shared about the actor he most wanted to play Taylor. “When I completed the novel, I even said to the producer who’s working on it, I said Zac would be at the top of my list if this ever gets made.”

However, as someone well aware of how Hollywood works, Robert knew not to get his hopes up. “I had maybe 10 seconds of excitement, but I’ve lived in LA now for five years and I’ve lived in New York for almost nine years before that, and I know — I know — not to get too excited over these things,” he said. “I’m very much in the camp that there’s a signed deal, until there’s a done deal, there’s nothing set in stone.”

As far as other dream cast members, Robert said he isn’t sure who he’s want to play Jennie but he is dying to get Kat Dennings as the actress for the character of Mia: “I love her. I think she’s brilliant. I love her acting.”

But Robert emphasizes that even though he has been approached about selling the movie rights to “Spin” and Zac appears to be interested, the film is far from being set in stone. He told us that, before he started writing “Spin,” he had written a TV treatment following a similar storyline that ultimately went nowhere.

“My ultimate goal is that [‘Spin’ is] a book first and people really just enjoy it as a book and really just kind of have fun with it ... because really nowadays, my thing is they all kind of merge together: books, movies, televisions, web series,” he said. “I don’t mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but until [the film is] actually a reality that’s crazy for me to even speculate that it’s even happening.”

Robert has already submitted a second novel to St. Martin’s Press, the publisher for “Spin,” which is due out next summer. An “all new and all original” story separate from the world of “Spin,” his second novel called “Waxed” is about three sisters living in New York City who run a high-end bikini wax salon. He notes, “It’s pretty edgy."

Little HS2 tidbit

I saw this girl's tweet about being involved in choreographing for HS2 http://twitter.com/LTHipHop/status/3403462948

Turns out according to her YT page as well as IMDB page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0852780/ that she was in 17 Again as one of the cheerleaders, and all of the original HS choreographers were involved in the dance scenes in 17 Again so it could be plausible. :) Just thought I'd share.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit

it is odd. I tweeted her trying to get more info. We'll see.

Maybe she just meant working as a dancer in the movie? idk.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
Thanks for sharing. :)

I have trouble believing any of it though.

It's way to early to "hire" assistant choreographers for a movie which isn't even certain, doesn't have a script yet and won't start filming for at least another 2 years - even informally (and her tweet doesn't sound like she's in contact with the producers and they mentioned on the side that they like her to be part of it when it's time). Plus, you would think that she was "applying" for the job but the tweet doesn't sound like that either...

Re: Little HS2 tidbit

Welcome. :)

Idk its odd but you would think someone who had actually worked with those people would not make something like that up. I think it could possibly be true but its very strange for sure.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
I had another look and I would say it's a fake twitter account.

The YT channel and MySpace seems real but the Twitter account is only 1.5 days old and doesn't have any communication with anybody (but mentioned another account of that girl and calls her a poser so for some strange reason there are people who make fake accounts of her). Esp. suspicious is that she's BFF with Alyson Stoner according to the YT which seems believable considering the videos and Alyson isn't even on her follower list (and not one of the people who follows her either). JMHO.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
I dont think Adam meant "start filming in 2 yrs" I think he meant like being released. At least that's what I got from it. But yeah Idk if this tweet is legit.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
I do think he meant film in 2+ years. While I have other reasons, I'll just briefly outline one of them:

If you want to release Hairspray 2 in 2 years, it would have to be summer 2011 (Hairspray 2 is a summer release and nothing else). In order to have it done by then, it would mean you need to start dance rehearsal/filming mid 2010 (5-6 months for rehearsal & filming and then 6 months for post). That means pre-production would have to start at the latest in spring 2010, likely early 2010.

But Adam has made it very clear on his twitter that he's directing a different project first (based on his comments I would say he meant it was between Sinbad and Bob: The Musical). Both projects have a reasonable size (ie bigger than a simple comedy; Sinbad is actually even a big summer blockbuster). To film these projects you have to calculate at least 6 months pre-production, 5 months filming and 6 months post - and that's very generous (as in short).

So, until Adam can start pre-production on HS2 there will have been at least 18 months gone by - even if he does everything in the shortest possible timeframe with no breaks. JMHO.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
I actually don't see it necessarily being a summer release but that's just me.I also can't tell what his next project would be based on his twitters but idk. And it seems weird it would be that late since Variety and a lot of other media said it would be released in Summer 2010...so that seems really far off...although I can't see 2010 happening either LOL. Thanks for your opinion on it though. You always have good insight on things :)

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
Projects getting pushed back by several years happens more often than not. I've been looking at projects in development on IMDb for a longer while now and the majority gets made later than initially set up/announced for, esp the bigger projects. Imo, New Line announced it on the heels of Mamma Mia's success hoping they could pump it out within a short timeframe but then once everyone sat down and talked about it (incl Adam only wanting to do it when it's right) they realized it's not possible in such a short timeframe and it went into the normal deveopment cycle. JMHO.

Also, I personally think that they still haven't even hired a writer yet - although I can't prove that. Given the media profile of Hairspray 2 I would absolutely expect a writer of the initial script to be announced in the trades and there hasn't been anything.

Are you serious with Sinbad? ...wtf. I love Adam and all, but, uh. Maybe I just don't know enough about it.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
Not that Bob: The Musical is a very encouraging title either, but at least that could mean anything, really.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
Bob: the Musical actually sounds potentially cool. It could be horrible too but I'm hoping for AWESOME.

He could also be working on Bye Bye Birdie, though he isn't listed as director on that... nobody is yet.

Sinbad is still listed as optioned so IDEK if there is a script yet... maybe jeezbee does.

Re: Little HS2 tidbit
Both have been projects on Adam's development for a while. I've made the conclusions based on his twitter comments (so they are not 100% but imo a good fit to the projects he's signed for).

Here is Bob's summary:
Bob - The Musical follows a mild-mannered man who suddenly hears the "inner song" of people's hearts after being struck in the head.

It's a New Line project and has a finished script. Marc Shaiman is writing the music for that one too.

And Sindbad is a big Sony summer tentpole. There is no info on the script but I noticed that Adam/his production company isn't always very timely in updating IMDb (eg Step-Up 3D is still listed as optioned property but they have finished filming recently). IIRC he mentioned something about Bollywood elements for it though.

In terms of Hairspray 2 it doesn't matter much which project though. If he's filming something else first, he'll be busy for at least 18 months imo.
