Zac's Time 100 Article (by Claire Danes)

Zac Efron
by Claire Danes

Zac and I shot a movie called Me and Orson Welles about a year ago on the Isle of Man. As soon as Zac arrived, it seemed more like the Isle of Teenage Girls. Many, many teenage girls. When Zac was first spotted through the window of a local café, a handful of admirers multiplied into a squealing mob. He had to be escorted back to the hotel in a police car. For almost a week, girls raced from school to keep vigil outside the hotel. I often fell asleep to their resounding chant: "We want Zac! We want Zac!" I have never worked with anyone so famous.

I couldn't help being reminded of the time I had spent with another gifted idol, Leonardo DiCaprio, about a decade before. I saw the simmering ardor of the teenage masses turn into unbridled hysteria after Titanic was released. But this was even more intense. The difference, I realized, was that Zac is not only an actor but also a musician, a bona fide song-and-dance man. We ladies are defenseless against such a combination.

But I suppose we all know that Zac, 21, is a song-and-dance man. What is less known — and what I had the privilege of learning firsthand — is that he is a performer capable of great subtlety and vulnerability. A lot is asked of Zac in this role. He plays a high school student from the 1930s who talks himself into Orson Welles' production of Julius Caesar and is seduced by art, the big city and, of course, a girl. Zac is in every scene; he recites Shakespeare, falls in love, discovers the expanse of the world, sees it suddenly collapse upon him and then goes back to high school. In other words, he becomes a man.

Zac met these demands with focus, humility and enthusiasm — and the result is breathtaking. It seems Zac is not only an entertainer but also an artist. He is going make us swoon for many years to come.

Also there doesn't seem to be any official ranking order (at least on the website) as he's in the sub-category, Artists and Entertainers but Joel Stein ranked them (mostly by food value?) and gave Zac position number seven. His reasons were thus:

7. Zac Efron: I interviewed you over coffee and though you didn't say anything that changed my life, I do go to that coffee place now when I'm in the Valley. Aroma has a killer chocolate chip bread pudding!

Plus, Times movie critic Richard Corliss discusses why Zac Efron is on the list in this video (~1:11). LOL @ "Bring in the ladies."

lol "today... you are a man"

from 6 to 14!? yeah right.

You think one day Zac will embrace his gay fans? He knows he has them. I just hope when he's older he will speak out on his appreciation, like a lot of actors in Hollywood have. BTW, I'm not militant about that he doesn't HAVE to, to win me over. :)

"I'm not militant about that.." lol

Oh man, so much to catch up to.

Love that he made the official list - I didn't think he had a chance in hell. And based on the commentary in the video he made it because they honestly think he has the potential and skills to really become a big movie star. I love that comment in the video: "Zac Efron, you may look like the perfect, perpertual adolecent but by joining the TIME100, today, you are a man."

I also love that we hear now from Claire as well; we hadn't seen her talk about Zac yet. And another comparison to Leo. Lol. But joking aside, all those comparisons to Leo and others are a good thing. Yes, we all want Zac to be the future Zac Efron and not anybody else but Leo and names basically stand in for "successful and talented A-List movie star" - it doesn't really matter which name they use imo. I've read a quote once which said, "Acting skills are important but the perception about your acting skills are equally important." I totally agree with that quote and that's one of Zac's main problems nowadays; no matter how good he is, due to HSM the perception about his acting is poor and by comparing him with all those big names, they put him on equal standing with their acting - a good thing.

Anyway, I think all those comparisons we've seen over the last weeks and months are a slow and subconcious brainwashing of the mainstream audience. It works just like advertising, if people hear often enough that he's the next Leo, Johnny, Tom, Brad, etc or that he's the next big thing, they will subconciously start believing it. Yes, there is a small percentage of people who will question it and will give him flack for things like the Interview magazine title "Zac Efron is the future" or will laugh off those comparisons but 95% of people won't make the effort to even think about those statements. If they read/hear it often enough, they will believe it just like advertisements, and will consequently check out Zac's next movie because they've been taught he's the next big thing. Sure it'll take some time and it requires him to not screw it up but all those statements and quotes are paving the road for major movie stardom right now. It's up to Zac to deliver and then he can reach for the stars.

Sorry for the novel... I got carried away. I could have just said that I'm proud how he's increasingly perceived by the industry and the media.

Also, no matter how silly the ranking criteria are - no 7 is mind-boggling. And he's going to get shit-load of press out of this because while most people on that list are 'more important' they are also less interesting for the media. It might even help 17 Again's box office - perhaps more adults will get curious and check out the movie when they hear about this (yeah, I know it's a stretch but it certainly won't hurt).

LOL bee!

love your 'novels' and i was pleasantly surprised that he made the list as well.

i hope you're right about all the leo comparisons paying off for him, i had never thought of it like that.

so he's off now until pre-production/filming starts for st. cloud???

It is so nice that Claire has such lovely things to say about him. I've always liked her as an actress, and probably would've seen Me and Orson Wells with or without Zac.

I love chocolate chip bread pudding. Tbh I would have ranked someone infinitely high JUST FOR THAT.

(Oh and to answer your question from last night: I don't have ADD, but I allowed myself to be a neurobio test subject for money on a few occasions and Ritalin is the one drug that DOES THINGS to me.)

He's the only member of young hollywood to make the list, so it really is quite an honor... just look at the names.
