OMG IS THIS TRUE?!?!?! Zefron quits Footloose?!?!
HOLY FUCK GUYS! I'm not sure how I feel about this right now... I mean, I know what I said before. I don't want this to hurt his relationship with Paramount if it is true. Ugh. OMG! We need more info!

From thewrap.com:

Zac Efron wants to be fancy free, but apparently not footloose.

The teen-throb star of Disney’s first three “High School Musical” films, has pulled out of Paramount’s planned remake of “Footloose,” in an apparent effort to stretch his career beyond fame as just a cute song-and-dance man.

Efron told the studio last week that he did not want to do another musical at this point in his career, according to a senior member of the production team.

The team member told TheWrap that Efron had script approval on the movie and used a rewrite on the screenplay as the loophole to get out of his contract: “People had been working on this project since last July -- we were all shocked.”

A Paramount spokesman could not immediately be reached for confirmation.

Despite occasional serious roles in film and television series such as “NCIS” and “CSI: Miami,” Efron has earned superstar status by singing and dancing as Troy Bolton in the HSM series, the first two for television, the third a wide-release feature. He also played a singing, dancing teen in the 2007 musical “Hairspray,’’ a remake of the 1988 John Waters’ film, which became a Broadway musical.

And earlier this month, along with his “HSM” co-star and occasional girl friend, Vanessa Hudgens, he joined Hugh Jackson in a song and dance number during the Academy Award presentations.

Seems enough of that is enough for the young actor.

Efron’s effort to play a more serious role was slated to get a big boost last year with the release of “Me and Orson Welles,” a drama with Claire Danes, directed by Richard Linklater, in which he plays Broadway actor who has a chance meeting with Welles in 1937. The film, scheduled for 2008, has not yet been released.

The new “Footloose,” a remake of the 1984 Kevin Bacon starrer, was to be directed by Kenny Ortega, who directed all three “High School Musicals” and was slated to begin shooting this spring in Atlanta, with a targeted release date in 2010. The budget was well over $20 million.

While Disney is planning a “High School Musical 4,” Efron is not expected to be a part of it.

1) One is this really true? The article says filming was to happen in Atlanta, which is totally different than the two other more plausible locations we've heard more substantial rumors of (Lehi, Utah or Toronto). Hopefully Zefron will comment while on his 17 Again press tour.

2) Creative issues seem to be plaguing the script, so this project might be better off, at the very least, being postponed. They've been trying to make a script work for a long time and Zac has stated he doesn't want to rush into it just to get it out and make a buck. This seems contrary to the studio's plans as they've already set up release dates.

3) I don't blame Zac for wanting not to do another musical at this point. But if they can't come to a consensus on a script then it is unfairly tying up his schedule, no matter how much he may want to stick with it. This isn't just Paramount he had a commitment to but to his friend Kenny Ortega as well.

I made a noise like "OhhhhHHHHHhhhh" when someone got called to the principal's office in 4th grade. I don't even know why, b/c that's not at all applicable right now.

LOL GOOD. I assume that means nix on HS2 too.

YOU KNOW MY LIFE PLAN FOR HIM RIGHT NOW IS LIKE STONER COMEDY ANYWAY.

hs2 is much further off than footloose was. so i wouldn't count that one out yet. i mean, he has no idea what the story even is yet.

i really want to hear what he has to say about it. i think you could sense the frustration he had with the studio just from the one or two things he said that were vaguely about it in sydney.

that said, the article seems to say they were going to film in atlanta which is totally contradictory to the things we heard on imdb boards (lehi, ut or ontario). who is more reliable idk but lehi or toronto make more sense then atlanta. so if they made that up, what else did they make up?

I don't know how I feel about this yet. But I agree with you, I hope that this doesn't hurt his relationship with Paramount. On the good side, hopefully this mean no HS2.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on March 23rd, 2009 06:11 am (UTC)
yes. the relationship thing worries me a lot. but hopefully it was more like... 'look this isn't going anywhere quickly enough and i can't keep putting off other opportunities while we figure it out. can we please just consent to put it off a year and do it then?' that is what i'm hoping for.

i don't think he'd want to fuck them over completely because doing that means fucking over kenny ortega too. and he loves kenny and wouldn't do that. plus he has a lot of good people to give him advice and he is very intelligent about the career stuff.

ugh. this is nerve wracking!

This detail is completely insignificant to the rest of the article, but "occasional girl friend"?

Did they break up at some point and I was just on a celeb gossip vacation or something?
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on March 23rd, 2009 06:05 am (UTC)
no zac and van didn't break up as far as we know, they are just bad writers or haters or both. or something, idk, lol.

Wow is all I can say. I think career wise this is a great choice, but i'm with you I don't want this to hurt his relationship with Paramount. I'm having like total Entourage flashbacks when Vince backed out of Aquaman 2. Lord Efron I hope you don't get too much flack for this.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on March 23rd, 2009 06:14 am (UTC)
I know. I actually totally have Entourage flashbacks happening. But I know he'd want to handle it well because of Kenny.
zaccy23zaccy23 on March 23rd, 2009 06:17 am (UTC)
Honestly I just think this whole project was delayed for so long. I mean he's been talking about if for well over a year if not longer. I think down the road everyone will look back on it and commend him for the decision he made when he was a 21 year old kid. But for now we just have to ride the wave and see.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on March 23rd, 2009 07:20 am (UTC)
this is my feeling too. it probably seemed like a good idea at the time... back before hairspray had been released, before hsm2 had even aired, much less everything else that has happened since.

so much has changed and i feel like it must have been just hard for him sitting and watching potential projects go by while he was waiting for them to create a worthwhile story.

It's a just a wait and see. I'm still a little "...." over this article. A quote from either Paramount and/or Zac/his people will help.

Either way, he has an anticipated film to promote and some very excited fans to meet- so I'm wishing nothing but the best for all those things to come.

Considering his most recent photoshoot, this is not at all shocking to me, it was quite obvious he was trying to make a statement. Now he's doing it in the form of his career, like he should have in the first place.
hunny miss (aka lets fead him to the gators)ehs_wildcats on March 23rd, 2009 07:28 am (UTC)
i think he was sticking with it out of loyalty to kenny. but for a project that was supposedly fast-tracked by the studio, it has been taking forever and really unfairly tying him up.

if anything i would guess/hope he approached it like, 'look, i know you guys want it out next summer, but i don't want to speed through it to get it out there, especially if it means it is going to be shitty. you can't set release dates until we have a good script. and i think the best thing for us to do creatively is to table it. you guys keep working on the script and i will do it later. let me do some other films and i'll come back to this when you've had time to actually make it work.'

that's my hope, that it was a mutual agreement to wait for a better time/script. then too if it never gets made there is really no one at fault and it won't have destroyed his relationship with paramount.

idk, i'm getting very sleepy and words are running together so i should probably sleep and see what happens in the a.m.

I was actually pretty happy hearing this but idk how reliable it is. But I think this project has been taking too long as it is tbh. But I totally thought of the Entourage/Aqua Man 2 storyline LMAO *eek* But if the reason for backing out is true I hope that doesn't mean the same for HS2 :( I really hope he does it!

I'm beyond thrilled about this. Zac is a wonderful actor..and I just don't want him to be typecast!

OT:

I'm ordering a custom made shirt and I want it to be Zefron related (to match my Phelps Phan shirt), but I can't think of anything creative to put on it. What should it say, guys? =)

that's what i'd go with. or just zefronite. i need to trademark that i think. lol.

wow is all i can say, although i was having a discussion about this somewhere else the other day.

its always possible to walk away from something, either b/c you haven't signed a contract or b/c you were smart enough to give yourself an out in the contract you signed LOL

and maybe this is why in his last several interviews he was more coy in his answers regarding this project.

if its true, i'm sure he was able to negotiate so that he didn't burn any bridges, b/c as much as he wants to prove himself, he's not at a stage in his career where he can piss off a major studio.

possibly to me this decision indicates that he realizes he needs to stay away from musicals ATM. the fact that footloose would be a starring role only furthers that concept for me.

all this coverage should force a comment from someone soon i'd think, even if zac wasn't on promo tour...
