That was a nice surprise.

As for the trailer reactions...

It was clear from second one that this movie would stir up a lot of "controversy." It's similar to when Hollywood dares to make anything anime related.

The funny thing is really how the most extreme reactions come from exactly the type of people this movie portrays and often portrays accurately. When looking through the twitter reactions I made a little game for myself: try to guess if the user is a DJ (or somewhat related to the industry) before clicking on the bio. Result: like 80%+ of the most negative reactions comes from users who have either DJ in the bio or a soundcloud link... I have no doubt that proper DJing and producing good EDM music is skill which takes a lot of knowledge and talent but there are tons of wannabe DJs and ravers who are exactly the way the movie depicts them. And I feel many of the idiotic reactions are from exactly these people. It's like it hits too close to home but they either are in denial or they just can't admit it.

I have no idea if the movie is going to be good or not. My personal expectations aren't very high. I think some of the stuff in the trailer is compelling but it's very cliche. And the characters are pretty douchey which makes it harder for people to like. So the question to me is if it's too cliche or done well. That said, I really hope they pulled it off and Zac's performance is decent.

I'm curious to see the reactions from the Entourage crowd because it really is a lot like that in the EDM world.

"That was a nice surprise."

Ha ha. It was a painful surprise for me. I had just gotten home and flipped on the TV, which gave me the last minute of Ellen. She was doing acknowledgements and, among others, thanked Zac Efron. And I said, "Whaaat?!" I had missed the whole thing by just that much.

Speaking of Entourage, I don't see Zac listed among the 50 cameos in the movie. I don't see how this movie can be released without a three-second cameo by Zac. *grump*

Zac doesn't need to cameo in Entourage, he has his own douchebag movie.

EDM is the bubblegum pop of all electronic music; some EDM DJs are talented (Benassi (first!) for instance) but the majority are merely "me-too" guys who have technical expertise but no creativity, and hence essentially reproduce and repeat what someone else has already sone. That's why, as a genre, I'm not a fan.

The creators right now-those coming up with new stuff-are the house DJ's. Tony Moran's new podcast from Mexico City - there's a ton of sounds, mostly cross-genre combinations, etc. that I hadn't heard before, and Joe Gauthreaux is constantly experimenting with new sounds. I guess when your genre is second (deep house) but you have a consistent following, you have more creative freedom to experiment because you know your fan base will buy your records, attend your shows, etc. When you're on top and producing the same sound everyone else is producing, however, there's too much risk in branching out and trying new stuff.

But EDM is waning:

Here's one article on it..
