New Project: 'Narc'
From Deadline:
EXCLUSIVE: Zac Efron NarcFox has snapped up life rights for the true crime project Narc, based on the actual story of an All-American college kid-turned-police informant. Zac Efron is attached to star as a student, frat president, and lacrosse team captain who’s busted for drugs intended for a party, then secretly turns narc and helps the cops bust criminals while carrying on his campus life. Efron’s manager and producing partner Jason Barrett will exec produce with Underground-repped Doug Banker. They’ve got a very familiar friend in a high place in Fox exec Jason Young, who briefly departed the studio to help Efron establish Ninjas Runnin’ Wild in 2010 before returning as Fox’s VP of Production.

Narc joins a raft of Efron projects in the works which include Einstein Theory, Art Of The Steal, and the Snabba Cash remake, all set up at WB. As for Narc - described as a “college Donnie Brasco,” Fox is tapping a scribe from its writers program. Julie and Rick Yorn are producing for LBI and Matthew Reilly will co-produce.

Slightly longer description of the project from THR:
Narc, described as a college-set Donnie Brasco, centers on an all-American college student who was a big man on campus. He was the president of his fraternity and captain of his lacrosse team but got busted by local police when he was caught with some cocaine he was going to distribute at a party.

The police offered him a deal in which he would not be arrested if he became an undercover informant. The student then ended up living a secret double life while in college, wearing wiretaps and eventually putting away big-time criminals.

I really like this project.

Playing a what sounds preppy student is believable for Zac, so it makes it much easier for people to buy him as the character. The story sounds good. The Yorn's are interesting as producer. Fox might not be my favorite studio but I really like that he's "diversifying studios" and not only has his projects at WB.

"Playing a what sounds preppy student is believable for Zac,"

Excellent point. With his HSM image and pretty face, it's hard to think of a way to slip Zac into the thriller/suspense category. But playing a preppy type in jeopardy is just about perfect.

I think this could be really interesting if done right.

I hope it will really work out and not go to development hell because, boy, I'm tired of this, lol.

It is the kind of project that could attract a very interesting director and not music video dudes (nothing really against them, but I want Zac to also work with known directors). Maybe I'm aiming too high but oh well.

Again, I hope this will work out and maybe we could already have a script by october/november.

I understand the development frustration but it's really normal. If you look at other stars they also have a bazillion projects in dev which often go nowhere. Look at it this way... the more dev projects he has, the likelier it is that one of them happens. :)

That said, at least right now he's doing other projects while his own dev projects move forward veeeeeeeeeeeeeery sloooooooooowly. I hope he keeps doing that and doesn't go on a longish break again.

lmao look at you being all optimistic!

And, yes, I've several friends who are Robert Pattinson fans and I see how frustrated they get too but sometimes I go to Zac's IMDb, look at the "Projects In Development" column and go:

and also:

But yes, I'm glad he is also doing other projects while he waits. 2013 has been great so far. Even We Are Officially Dating?, that I disliked inatially, turned out to be a good thing since Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller are getting a lot of attention lately.

You do not understand how fully in support of AWOD I am since Zac and MBJ are in that together. I'm pretty excited for that movie just for them basically.

When Zac picks projects which look good, I'm always optimistic. Just when I think they have red flags, I can't keep my mouth shut. ;)

I'm still not a fan of the AWOD plot but the cast is really great and will hopefully compensate for the lack of originality. It would also work if a distributor picked it up for wide release which makes it way less important to be "different." We'll see.

"I think this could be really interesting if done right."

Thinking about it overnight, it occurred to me that they could ruin the project by writing and shooting it too light - losing their nerve and turning it into a campus-crime "romp" rather than a nail-biter.

I don't know. Again, if done right, I think a "Catch Me If You Can" tone would work BUT, imo, a darker movie would be way more interesting. More like "The Departed".

These movies don't have similar plots to Narc (just a few points in common) but it was the only way I could describe how I felt lol.

This sounds like a really good project. Just need a good director and some good co-stars, and I'm all for this movie. Fingers crossed it works out :)

This movie sounds really cool! I'm so happy he's finally making movies I like to watch. lol

The premise for this is not very new(to be honest, general audience doesn't like movies with new and unfamiliar concept), but Zac's involvement in it alone makes this movie "fresh" IMO. Same goes for Autobahn. If Paul Walker or other action stars were to star in it, it would look like the same old action movie. However, since Zac is playing the lead, the movie sounds quite "new" to me. A movie becomes very different with different lead. I think he'd be really great playing a reluctant hero whom audience can relate to. He already proved in 17 Again that he can totally save a movie with tired concept and generic plot.

LOL - already stereotyped as a frat boy! Well, that's okay. He was stereotyped as a jock in HS, and jocks are the ones who join fraternities, so...but yeah, I'm psyched about this movie, mostly because its dark.
kleth on May 23rd, 2013 06:07 pm (UTC)
"... mostly because its dark."

See my comment above and cross your fingers.

"...stereotyped as a frat boy"

They'd better go into production soon. He's aging out of the frat boy category.
countessm3countessm3 on May 24th, 2013 09:56 am (UTC)
Eh...just noticed that! Indeed, let's hope it's not the Twilight version of the script that gets produced.

I guess when he ages out the frat boy category, he'll be just ripe enough for the action star one. (-:
kleth on May 24th, 2013 07:36 pm (UTC)
That's my plan, and he'd better stick to it.
